  • Two La1.82Ca1.18Cu2O6+δ (2126) compounds exhibited different properties depending upon how they were synthesized. The compound prepared under high oxygen pressure showed superconductivity. But the compound prepared under low oxygen pressure did not exhibit superconductivity, and showed a metal-insulator transition. Our study on these compounds shows that a small amount of additional oxygen intercalated into the superconducting phase plays an important role for superconductivity. The Fermi surface of non-superconducting 2126 compound possesses nesting phenomena, which is the reason for the M-1 transition. On the other hand, the superconducting 2126 compound does not show Fermi surface nesting. This is because the additional oxygen removes some electrons from Cu d-orbitals, thereby bradking the Fermi surface nesting.

  • The Velocity Autocorrelation Function (VAF) of the sodium ions is calculated for a range of temperature from 250K to 1000K and converted into the linear ac-conductivity and ac-susceptibility response via Fourier transformation. A peak is found in the conductivity around $6{\times}10^{12}Hz$ that has some of the character of a Poley absorption. Here it is shown to be due to an harmonically coupled site vibrations of the sodium atoms, which extend only over a limited range. At frequencies below the peak the conductivity tends towards a constant i.e. dc value corresponding to a constant flow of ions through the simulation cell. At high temperatures the conductivity due to this ion transport process behaves like a metal with an insulator to metal transition occurring around a specific temperature.

  • Giant magnetoresistance (GMR), tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), and magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) are currently active research areas in spintronics. The high magnetoresistance and the high spin polarization (P) of electrons in the ferromagnetic electrodes of tunnel junction or intermediate layers are required. Magnetite, Fe3O4, is predicted to possess as half-metallic nature, P ~ 100% spin polarization, and has a high Curie temperature (TC~850 K). Experiments demonstrated that the P~($80{\pm}5$)%, ~($60{\pm}5$)%, and ~40-55% for epitaxial (111), (110) and (001)-oriented Fe3O4 thin films, respectively. Epitaxial Fe3O4 films may enable us to investigate the effects of half metals on the spin transport without grain-boundary scattering. In addition, it has been reported that the Verwey transition (TV, a first order metal-insulator transition) of 120 K in bulk Fe3O4 is strongly affected by many parameters such as stoichiometry and stress, etc. Here we report that the growth modes, magnetism and transport properties of Fe3O4 thin films were strongly dependent on the oxygen pressure during film growth. The average roughness decreases from 1.021 to 0.263 nm for the oxygen pressure increase from $2.3{\times}10-7$ to $8.2{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr, respectively. The 120 K Verwey transition in Fe3O4 was disappeared for the sample grown under high oxygen pressure.

  • The magnetic properties of single- and poly-crystalline $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3/Pr_{0.65}Ca_{0.35}MnO_3$ multilayered (ML) films, and composite (CP) $(La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3})_{0.5}(Pr_{0.65}Ca_{0.35}_{0.5}MnO_3$ films, prepared by laser ablation, have been investigated in a wide temperature range. It was shown that the transformation from an incoherent to a coherent interface in the ML films leads to an enhancement of the ferromagnetic coupling between layers and to a single-phase magnetic transition. The amorphous CP films demonstrate a paramagnetic behavior of the magnetization with a sharp peak at $T_{G}\approx$45 K, which was interpreted as the formation of Griffiths phase. A short-term annealing at $750^{\circ}C$ induced the complete crystallization of film, and a recovery of the ferromagnetic and the metal-insulator transitions.

  • The evolution of oxidation states of vanadium is monitored with ambient pressure X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. As the pressure of oxygen gas and surface temperature change, the formations of various oxidation states of vanadium are observed on the surface. Under 100mTorr of the oxygen gas pressure and 523K of sample temperature, VO2 and V2O5 are formed on the surface. The temperature-dependent resistance measurement on grown sample shows a clear metal-insulator transition near 350K. In addition, the measurement of Raman spectroscopy displays the structural change from monoclinic to rutile structures across the phase transition temperature.

  • Perovskite Manganese Oxide has been intensively investigated since the discovery of the colossal magnetoresistive(CMR) effect. In this paper, we studied the effect of temperature dependence and various doping dependence of rare earth site ions of La0.7-xPrxCa0.3MnO3 series using Ultraviolet Photoelectron spectroscopy(UPS). They show unusual temperature dependent features and the doped rare earth ions seem to affect the electron-phonon coupling strongly. We found clear evidence of metal-insulator transition from the spectral density at the Fermi level. but the transition temperature is lower than that deduced from transport measurements. Also we found that the spectral features change as time goes on implying that the surface of these materials is somewhat unstable in the vacuum. We can conclude from these results that the surface oxygen atoms correlated to the hopping electrons can escape from the material into the vacuum and that the surface state of these material is different from the bulk state.

  • Vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) of monoclinic phase exhibits Metal Insulator Phase Transition (MIPT) phenomenon involving a sharp change in electrical and optical properties at $68^{\circ}C$. Solution-based process is applied to form uniform $VO_2$ coating layer on ceramic tiles. This can selectively block the near-infrared light to possibly reduce the energy loss and prevent dew condensation caused by the temperature difference. Heat treatment conditions including temperature and dwell time were examined to obtain a monoclinic $VO_2$ single phase. Both rutile and monoclinic $VO_2$ phases were observed from in the tiles post-annealed below $700^{\circ}C$. Desired monoclinic $VO_2$ single phase was grown in the tiles heat treated at $750^{\circ}C$. Nano facets of irregular size were observed in the monoclinic $VO_2$ phase involving the phase-transition. Grain growth of monoclinic $VO_2$ phase was observed as a function of dwell time at $750^{\circ}C$.

  • Sol-gel processing of BaTiO$_3$ ceramics doped with La(0.01-1.00 at.%) were prepared from metal barium, titanium n-butoxide and lanthanum isopropoxide. Characterization of the sol-gel-derived powder using XRD, SEM is also reported. The obtained results suggested that insulator to semiconductor transition for highly donor-doped barium titanate was closely related to the incorporation of donor into the grains and to the resultant grain size, which were significantly affected by the sinterability of BaTiO$_3$ powders and sintering conditions used.
