Uniaxial tensile tests were conducted to accurately evaluate the in-plane mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs). The FMLs in the current study are comprised of a layer of self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP) sandwiched between two layers of aluminum alloy 5052-H34. The nonlinear tensile behavior of the FMLs under in-plane loading conditions was investigated using both numerical simulations and a theoretical analysis. The numerical simulation was based on finite element modeling using the ABAQUS/Explicit code and the theoretical constitutive model was based on the volume fraction approach using the rule of mixture and a modification of the classical lamination theory, which incorporates the elastic-plastic behavior of the aluminum alloy and the SRPP. The simulations and the model are used to predict the inplane mechanical properties such as stress-strain response and deformation behavior of the FMLs. In addition, a post-stretching process is used to reduce the thermal residual stresses before uniaxial tensile testing of the FMLs. Through comparison of both the numerical simulations and the theoretical analysis with the experimental results, it is concluded that the numerical simulation model and the theoretical approach can describe with sufficient accuracy the actual tensile stress-strain behavior of the FMLs.

The preferential transport phenomena of neutral cation-anion moieties in neutral macrocycle-facilitated emulsion liquid membrane were described in this study. Emulsion membrane systems consisting of (1) aqueous source phase containing 0.001 M M($NO_3$)$_2(M=Mn^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Zn^{2+},\;Sr^{2+},\;Cd^{2+},\;and\;Pb^{2+})$ (2) a toluene membrane containing 0.01 M ligand $(DBN_3O_2$, DA18C6, DT18C6, TT18C6, HT18C6) and the surfactant span 80 (sorbitan monooleate) (3% v/v) and (3) an aqueous receiving phase containing $Na_2S_2O_3$ or $NaNO_3$ were studied with respect to the disappearence of transition metal ions from the source phase as a function of time. Cation transports for various two component or three component equimolar mixture of transition metal and $Cu^{2+}$ in a emulsion membrane system incorporating macrocyclic ligand (HT18C6) as carrier were determinded. $Cu^{2+}$ was transported higher rates than the other $M^{2+}$ in the mixture solution. Equilibrium constants for cation-source phase co-anion, cation macrocycle and cation-receiving phase reagent interaction are examined as parameters for the prediction of cation transport selectivities.
Smelting reduction of spent lithium-ion batteries results in the production of metallic alloys in which reduced cobalt, nickel and copper coexist. In this study, we investigated the leaching of the metallic alloys containing the above three metals together with iron, manganese, and silicon. The mixture of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent was employed, and the effect of the concentration thereof, the reaction time and temperature, and pulp density was investigated to accomplish the complete leaching of cobalt, nickel, and copper. The effect of the hydrogen peroxide concentration and pulp density on the leaching was prominent, compared to that of reaction time and temperature, especially in the range of 20 to 80℃. The complete leaching of the metals present in metallic alloys, except silicon, was accomplished using 2 M HCl and 5% H2O2 with a pulp density of 30 g/L for 150 min at 60℃.
Accumulation, elimination and subcellular distribution of heavy metals in Littorina brevicula exposed to cadmium and zinc separately and concurrently were investigated. When the winkles had been exposed to 400 ㎍/L CdCl₂ and 3000 ㎍/l ZnSO₄ separately for 90 days, each of the metal body burden in the whole sofl parts increased in proportion to time of exposure until 70 days. But it didn't increase after 70 days. But when the winkles had been exposed to cadmium and zinc simultaneously, cadmium body burden decreased but zinc body burden increased as compared to the winkles exposed to each of the metal. We also found that cadmium accumulated in the winkles was not depurated for 42 days, but zinc accumulated in them was depurated. Especially, zinc was depurated faster when they had been exposed to mixture of cadmium and zinc. After the winkles had been exposed to cadmium and zinc separately for 70 days, about 60% cadmium of the total body burden was associated with the soluble fraction, while about 75% zinc of the total body burden was associated with insoluble fraction. And these trends of metal partitioning did not alter when the winkles had been exposed to metal mixture. After the soluble fraction applied to gel-filtration chromatography column, the distribution patterns of cadmium and zinc associated with proteins or ligands were different each other. Most of cadmium (>90%) in the soluble fraction was bound to MBP-1 (Metal-binding protein-1), about 6.5 kDa), while zinc was distributed evenly to HMW (High molecular weight fraction, >60 kDa), MBP-1, MBP-2 (about 5 kDa), LMW (Low molecular weight fraction, <1 kDa).
To investigate the deterioration of textiles with metal thread, I surveyed 40 textile objects, dating from the 11th to the 19th century from Korea, China, Japan, and Central Asia at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. This survey included various types, widths, and thicknesses of metal thread. In addition, deterioration was examined under the microscope and color information was collected using the spectrophotometer. While investigating metal thread in the collections, I fabricated 12 different types of metal samples with metal leaf(24K gold, silver, and copper leaf), adhesive (hide animal glue and a mixture of hide animal glue and iron oxide red), and paper substrate(Korean mulberry and Taiwanese kozo paper). The accelerated deterioration process of those fabricated samples was carried out using a light box(UV and daylight), and a humidity cabinet. In the light experiment with blue scales textile fading card(aka, blue wool standard), the metal leaf began to peel off during the deterioration process with 756,000 lux-hours UV and daylight. In the temperature and humidity experiment, I could observe the reddish tarnish on copper, and some part of it began to peel off. Color reading on the light exposed samples showed that the degree of color change on the surface follows the amount of exposure as it increased over time. On the other hand, color change on the samples after artificial deterioration using temperature and humidity factors showed random change of color with occasional spikes. Distortion of original shape worsened in the samples exposed to temperature and humidity.
The powders of the system Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN were prepared using Si(OC2H5)4 and YCl3.6H2O together with commercial AlN powder. $\alpha$-Si3N4 was prepared by the carbothermal reduction and nitridation of the hydrolyzed gel at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. YCl3.6H2O was observed to be changed to Y2O3 during the reaction. $\alpha$-Sialon(X=0.2, 0.4, 0.6) ceramics were obtained by hot-pressing the Si3N4-Y2O3-AlN mixture at 178$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h under 30 MPa. The content of $\alpha$-Sialon increased with increasing metal solubility(x value) and $\alpha$-Sialon single phase was obtained at the metal solubility of 0.6. With increasing metal solubility, flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistence were decreased, while the microhardness was increased. Large elongated $\beta$-Si3N4 grains were mainly observed at lower metal solubility. Mechanical prorerties of the sintered ceramics with X=0.2 were measured as follows : flexural strength ; 650 MPa, fracture toughness ; 3.63 MN/m3/2, hardness ; 14.7 GPa, thermal shock resistence temperature ; 58$0^{\circ}C$.
Heavy metal ion immobilization properties of microporous ettringite (3Ca$O{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}3CaSO_4{\cdot}32H_2$) body were examined using standard solutions of typical heavy metals. Microporous Ettringite body with desirable shape for an ionic adsorbent was obtained by the self hardening of the paste prepared from the mixture of tricalcium aluminate($C_3$A) and gypsum(CaS$O_4{\cdot}2H_2$O). Crushed grains of ettringite were soaked in each standard solutions of Pb, Co, Cd, Mn and Cr concentrated at 200 ppm. In order to evaluate the ionexchange and immobilization ability, the ionic concentration of the filtrate solution as well as the solution obtained after leaching test was measured. As a result, for the heavy metal ions excepting Cr, porous ettringite body was revealed to be excellent in ionic exchange and immobilization properties though some ions eluted at the severe condition of pH 2. The adsorption and keeping capacity for four heavy metals showed the order of $Pb{>}Co{>}Cd{>}$Mn.

Among the components of rotary hooks, a core component of an embroidery sewing system, a study was conducted to apply metal injection molding to the manufacture of a hook body and a housing that was very difficult to mechanical working. The correlation of feedstock, a mixture of binder and SCM 415 metal powder, and properties of the pressure-volume-temperature interrelationship, viscosity, specific heat, and thermal conductivity were measured. Injection molds for the hook body and the housing were developed through injection molding analysis using these properties and conducted injection tests. Optimal injection gate position and number, injection pressure, and injection time were obtained through a comparison of analysis results with the experiment results.
Decarburization phenomena have been studied by plasma in stainless steel, plain carbon steel and cast iron. It was also investigated the movement of impurity element P,S in the plasma jet metal pool. The plasma jet was obtained by $Ar\;-\;CO_2$ gas mixture with 5 kVA DC power source. It produced enough temperature to dissociate into activated oxygen atom by reaction of $CO_2{\leftrightarrows}CO+O^+$ and it reacted with ${\underline{C}}$ in metal pool. Decarburization rate was increased about 5 times in comparing with the conventional induction melted metal pool by $CO_2$ gas decarburization. Even under the Ar plasma jet, decarburization was obtained by agitation of metal bath by $Ar^+$ bombardment and dilution phenomena of carbon atom under the very high plasma temperature. But heavy element P and S are not much removed because they are too heavy in mass to be activated by $Ar^+$ion bombardment. Desulphurization was achieved by $Ar\;-\;CO_2$ plasma in plain carbon steel and cast iron by the reaction of $SO_2({\underline{S}}+O^+)$. But dephosphorization could not be obtained by $Ar\;-\;CO_2$ plasma, because gaseous reaction of phosphorous oxide (${\underline{P}}+O^+$) was not existed.
In this study, we performed an electrowinning process for effective removal of metals (Cu and Ni) in solution and their recovery as solid forms. A complete removal of Cu and Ni (1,000 mg/L) was observed during four times recycling test, indicating that our electrowinning system can ensure the efficient metal removal with high stability and durability. In addition, we investigated effect of operation parameters (i.e., concentration of boric acid only for Ni, variation of pH, concentration of electrolyte ($H_2SO_4$), and cell voltage) on the efficiency of metal removal (Cu and Ni) during the electrowinning. The addition of boric acid significantly enhanced removal efficiency of Ni as the concentration of boric acid increased up to 10 g/L. Compared to negligible pH effect (pH 1, 2, and 4) on the Cu removal, we observed the increase in removal efficiency of Ni as the pH increased from 1 to 4. The electrolyte concentration did not significantly influence the removal of Cu and Ni in this study. We also obtained great removal rates of Cu and Ni at 2.5 V and 4.0 V, which were much faster than those at lower voltages. Finally, almost 99% of each Cu and Ni (1,000 mg/L) was selectively removed from the mixture of metals by adjusting pH and addition of boric acid after the completion of Cu removal. The findings in this study can provide a fundamental knowledge about effect of important parameters on the efficiency of metal recovery during the electrowinning.
