  • This paper proposes a programmed ignition method of high frequency electronic ballast for metal halide lamp. The method precisely controls the ignition voltage and prevents possible damage of ballast for abnormal lamp operation or lamp failure, also sures the zero voltage switching. This improved performance for igniting the lamp enables reliable product of high frequency ballast because of high efficiency, fast start and no extra ignitor.

메탈 핼라이드 램프의 순시 재점등을 위한 점화기 개발 (The Ignitor Development for Momentary Restarting of Metal Halide Lamps)

  • The most of metalhalide lamps is what the momentary restarting cannot be realized when the arc tube is in the hot condition. The discharge starting voltage of arc tube in the hot condition is much higher than in the cold condition in proportion to the gaseous pressure. Therefore it takes about ten minutes to restart the metal Halide lamps, that is to say, it is possible to start when the pressure and the temperature are decreased. But, if the lamp is restarted in the hot condition, we must supply the high voltage pulse with 15kV between the both electrodes of lamp. The proposed ignitor has two ignitors. If we connect each ignitor at the both sides, the high voltages of two different frequencies are generated. If so, when the one of the ignitor generates the highest voltage and the other applied to elecrodes of the lamp. In this way, we can restart the lamp with the voltage 15kV, even if the lamp is in the hot condition.

Analysis of Arc Tube Properties by Degradation in Ceramic Metal Halide Lamp

  • To clarify the relations of optical properties to the main factors responsible for the loss and damage of luminous efficacy, a 20 min turn-on/turn-off test for 2,000 h for a ceramic metal halide lamp is conducted. The corrosion rates of the arc tube wall and electrode are estimated based on thermal stress. Wall blackening is attributed to the tungsten being transported from the hot electrode tips to the relatively cold arc tube wall. Furthermore, the grain boundaries of the arc tube are changed by the degradation. Distortion of the electrode is observed, and the ignition and the driving voltage of the load both increase. Finally, the color rendering index and the color coordinates are changed after the degradation. The luminous flux and the intensity of the luminous distribution are decreased significantly.

  • This paper presents a digital controller of electronic ballast for the metal halide lamp. The proposed controller includes the control algorithm for soft starting, no load protection, overcurrent protection and dimming(or power control). The proposed controller, moreover, has the high frequency modulation scheme and the tracking algorithm to avoid acoustic resonance phenomena. For the math production with the low cost using the ASICs, the proposed controller has been designed with the EPLDs only, without any microprocessor. In this paper, the proposed control algorithms are described and the experimental results of prototype 150W metal halide electronic ballast are presented.

  • Metal halide lamps have been made suitable for use in outdoor illumination systems over many years. They are also widely used in application and commercial lighting due to their attracting properties such as good quality color, rendering and high efficiency. Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the electronic ballast with hot restarting and resonance phenomenon. However, very few attempts have been made at the adaptive ignition method according to lamp state. This paper proposes an electronic ballast for metal halide lamps with an igniter for adaptive ignition. The proposed electronic ballast can generate different ignition voltages according to the arc tube state. The experimental results showed that the proposed ballast circuit using adaptive igniter is suitable for 70W HQI lamps.

  • A novel design technology for a high frequency electronic ballast for metal-halide discharge lamps is proposed. A PFC technique is adopted to get unit power factor and output frequency alteration technique is adopted to avoid acoustic resonance. For characteristics evaluation, the designed electronic ballast is presented using normalized parameter. To reduce losses of the ballast. ZVS control technique is adopted and the maximum flux density of magnetic core for inductor should be kept lower. The electronic ballast for 250[W] metal-halide discharge lamp is implemented and 96[%] efficiency and low conducted EMI level are accomplished.

  • 본 논문에서는 70[W] 메탈해라이드등을 위한 저전력 고주파 점등방식의 전자식 안정기가 연구되었다. 입력전원은 220[V]의 교류전압이 사용되며 전력처리시스템에 의하여 고주파의 교류전압으로 변환된다. 음향적 공명현상에 의한 등의 물리적 파손을 방징하기 위하여 제안된 안정기는 등에 22[kHz]의 교류전압을 공급한다. 이는 시동시간이나 소비전력감소와 같은 유용한 결과를 나타낸다. 실험결과, 등의 관전압과 관전류는 각각 피크치 155[V]와 0.6[A]이었다. 등의 전광속은 입력전력 82[W]에 대하여 5300[lm]이었으며 발광효율은 64.63[lm/w]를 나타내었다. 평균 완전점등시간과 재점등시간은 각각 3.9분과 4.5분을 나타냈었다.

  • 본 논문은 메탈할라이드 램프용 고주파 변조방식 전자식 안정기에 관한 것이다. 제안한 안정기는 고주파 영역에서 동작되며 외부 점화기 없이 LC 공진회로를 이용하여 램프를 기동시키므로 매우 컴팩트하며, 통상의 저주파식 전자식 안정기에 비하여 효율이 좋다. 제안하는 안정기는 공명현상을 회피하기 위하여 20kHz에서 100kHz 범위 내에서 변조되는 주파수로 제어된다. 본 논문에서는 안정기 특성을 평가하기 위하여 새로운 실시간 공명현상 검출기를 제안하였다. 또한 직류단 전류 검출을 통한 무부하 검출 알고리즘 및 전력제어 알고리즘에 대하여 기술하였다. 그리고 제안하는 방법을 적용한 프로토타입의 150W 메탈할라이드 램프 안정기로 수행된 실험결과를 검토하였다.

오징어 채낚기어업의 LED 집어시스템 도입에 따른 경제성 분석 (Estimating the economic effectiveness of LED fishing light systems for the squid jigging fishery)

  • The fuel cost of fishing lights for squid jigging fishing vessels takes about 30% of total fishing costs and over 65% of total fuel costs, which indicates the necessity of development of cost-reducing and high efficient fishing light system. This study aimed to analyze the economic effectiveness of LED fishing light systems in combination with metal halide lamp for the squid jigging fishery. Analytical results showed that the level of fishing profits of vessels using LED lights could be different with those of vessels using metal halide lights. That is, when a fuel cost could be reduced by 30%, fishing profits of vessels using LED lights might be the same as those of vessels using metal halide lights, and fishing profits of vessels using LED lights could be higher than those of vessels using metal halide lights when a fuel cost could be reduced by 50%.

The Development of the Buck Type Electronic Dimming Ballast for 250W MHL

  • In this paper, we studied the development of the electronic ballast for 250W MH (Metal-Halide) lamps. We were able to improve the input power factor by using a PFC IC. To provide the lamp with the rated voltage required, we used the buck-type dc-dc converter. The stress of the switching devices in the inverter could be reduced by this method. To eliminate the acoustic resonance phenomena of MH lamps, the voltage of the lamp added the high frequency sine-wave to the low frequency square-wave by using the full bridge typed inverter. We have developed a simple igniter using the L and C elements. We could control the dimness of the lamp by varying the output voltage of the buck converter. The buck converter output voltage could be controlled by using a microprocessor.
