Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the image quality, diagnostic efficacy, and radiation dose associated with the use of a cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector, compared to charge-coupled device (CCD) and complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS) detectors. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalographs of a phantom (type 1) composed of synthetic polymer filled with water and another phantom (type 2) composed of human skull macerated with polymer coating were obtained with CdTe, CCD, and CMOS detectors. Dosimeters placed on the type 2 phantom were used to measure radiation. Noise levels from each image were also measured. McNamara cephalometric analysis was conducted, the dentoskeletal configurations were assessed, and a subjective evaluation of image quality was conducted. Parametric data were compared via 1-way analysis of variance with the Tukey post-hoc test, with a significance level of 5%. Subjective image quality and dentoskeletal configuration were described qualitatively. Results: A statistically significant difference was found among the images obtained with the 3 detectors(P<0.05), with the lowest noise level observed among the images obtained with the CdTe detector and a higher subjective preference demonstrated for those images. For the cephalometric analyses, no significant difference (P>0.05) was observed, and perfect agreement was seen with regard to the classifications obtained from the images acquired using the 3 detectors. The radiation dose associated with the CMOS detector was higher than the doses associated with the CCD (P<0.05) and CdTe detectors(P<0.05). Conclusion: Considering the evaluated parameters, the CdTe detector is recommended for use in clinical practice.

A CMOS ReadOut Integrated Circuit (ROlC) for InfraRed Focal Plane Array (IRFPA) detector is presented, which is a key component in uncooled thermal imaging systems. The ROIC reads out signals from $64\times64$ Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) infrared detector array, then outputs pixel signals sequentially after amplifying and noise filtering. Various design requirements and constraints have been considered including impedance matching, low noise, low power dissipation and small detector pitch. For impedance matching between detector and pre~amplifier, a new circuit based on MOS diode structure is devised, which can be easily implemented using standard CMOS process. Also, tunable low pass filter with single~pole is used to suppress high frequency noise. In additions, a clamping circuit is adopted to enhance the signal~to-noise ratio of the readout output signals. The $64\times64$ IRFPA ROIC is designed using $0.65-\mu\textrm{m}$ 2P3M (double poly, tripple metal) N~Well CMOS process. The core part of the chip contains 62,000 devices including transistors, capacitors and resistors on an area of about $6.3-mm\times6.7-mm$.
Under the research project supported by Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), we have conducted the development of GPR systems for landmine detection. Until 2005, we have finished development of two prototype GPR systems, namely ALIS (Advanced Landmine Imaging System) and SAR-GPR (Synthetic Aperture Radar-Ground Penetrating Radar). ALIS is a novel landmine detection sensor system combined with a metal detector and GPR. This is a hand-held equipment, which has a sensor position tracking system, and can visualize the sensor output in real time. In order to achieve the sensor tracking system, ALIS needs only one CCD camera attached on the sensor handle. The CCD image is superimposed with the GPR and metal detector signal, and the detection and identification of buried targets is quite easy and reliable. Field evaluation test of ALIS was conducted in December 2004 in Afghanistan, and we demonstrated that it can detect buried antipersonnel landmines, and can also discriminate metal fragments from landmines. SAR-GPR (Synthetic Aperture Radar-Ground Penetrating Radar) is a machine mounted sensor system composed of B GPR and a metal detector. The GPR employs an array antenna for advanced signal processing for better subsurface imaging. SAR-GPR combined with synthetic aperture radar algorithm, can suppress clutter and can image buried objects in strongly inhomogeneous material. SAR-GPR is a stepped frequency radar system, whose RF component is a newly developed compact vector network analyzers. The size of the system is 30cm x 30cm x 30 cm, composed from six Vivaldi antennas and three vector network analyzers. The weight of the system is 17 kg, and it can be mounted on a robotic arm on a small unmanned vehicle. The field test of this system was carried out in March 2005 in Japan.

The ceramics superconductor may have a high degree of homogeneity and a more open structure through which atoms can easily diffuse without having to overcome the high activation barrier. Infrared detectors of ceramic superconductor materials have been studied. Ceramic superconductor have smaller reflection coefficient than metal superconductor and therefore infrared light can more easily penetrate into bulks. YBCO thick films show sensitivity of 250 V/W. The accumulation of particles decrease the superconducting energy gap.

A series of procedures using image processing techniques is presented for extracting layout information fast and automatically from chip images. CIF (caltech intermediate form) is chosen for representing such information. First, line-edges are extracted using a line-edge detector. Then, thinning and noise removal procedures follow. Subsequent procedures are vertex extraction and vertex grouping. Finally, CIF is extracted from the coordinates of the grouped vertices. In this paper, the final process is applied to only metal layer. In experiments, this processing scheme is shown to be very effective in extracting CIF.

We present a W-band radiometer to detect the metal targets on the ground environment. The type of the designed radiometer is the total power radiometer(TPR) for the simple configuration. The front end of the TPR consists of only the Mixer and LO for miniaturizing the system. Because the radiometer system does not use the low noise amplifier, we use matching circuits and a diode detector configured as a voltage doubler to compensate the degradation of sensitivity. We solve the temperature variation problems by filtering the reference voltages of the radiometer output signals. Through some experiments, we have verified that the designed radiometer system has good performances in detecting metal targets lying at several hundred meters.

A metal ion detector with a submicron size electrode was fabricated by field-induced AFM oxidation. The square frame of the mesa pattern was functionalized by APTES for the metal ion detection, and the remaining portion was used as an electrode by the self-assembly of MPTMS for Au metal deposition. The conductance changed with the quantity of adsorbed copper ions, due to electron tunneling between the mobile and surface electrodes. The smaller electrode has a lower limit of detection due to the enhancement in electron tunneling through metal ions that are adsorbed between the conductive-tip (mobile) and the surface (fixed) electrode. This two-electrode system immobilized with different functional groups was successfully used in the selective adsorption and detection of target materials.
In order to measure the thickness of the slag layer on the molten metal in the melting vessels for steel making foundaries, we manufactured the slag-thickness measuring system consisting of the probe and its driving system, which is based on the principle of detecting the change in the electrical resistivity. Experimental results show that there is a very wide difference of the electrical resistivity by the order of about $10^3$ between the molten metal and the hot slag and, hence, the air/slag and slag/molten metal interface can be exactly detected with the use of the probe which can be moved toward the melt. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed scheme of the slag measurement system in this study is Proven to be excellent in its efficiency and accuracy.
Environmental pollution from abandoned metal mines has been awarded as serious problem and many techniques have been applied to remediate pollutants. Main objective of this research was to evaluate efficiency of heavy metal sorption capacity of spent mushroom media (SMM) in aqueous and soil matrix. Laboratory batch experiment was conducted and 4 different heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn) were evaluated. In aqueous phase, all 4 heavy metals showed high reduction efficiency ranged from 60-99% and Pb showed the highest sorption efficiency. In case of soil phase, much lower sorption efficiency was observed compared to aqueous phase. The highest reduction efficiency was observed in Cd (average of 38%). With scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive detector (SED-EDS) analysis, we confirmed sorption of heavy metals at the surface of SMM. Overall, SMM can be used as sorption materials for heavy metals in both aqueous and soil matrix and more research should be conducted to increase sorption efficiency of SMM in soil.

The sheet metal shearing process is normally used in the precision elements such as semi-conductor components. In precision elements, burrs usually reduce the quality of machined parts and cause interference, jamming and misalignment during assembly procedures and because of their sharpness, they can be safety hazard to personnel. Furthermore, not only burrs are hard to predict and avoid, but also deburring, the process of removing burrs, is time-consuming and costly. In order to get the burr-free parts, therefore, we developed the precise burr measuring system using the laser. The laser burr measuring system consists of the laser probe, the photo detector, the achromatic doublet lens, and the rotary & the X-Y table. In previous reports, we used simple vertical measuring method. But, as we used relatively bigger laser spot diameter and had the limited reflection angle, it was difficult to obtain the precise measuring results. So called, the spot size effect makes the profile of burr measured distorted and the burr height measured smaller. By introducing the novel laser measuring method which employing the achromatic lens system and the tilting mechanism, we could make the spot size smaller and get the appropriate beam direction angle. Through the experiments, the accuracy of the developed system is proved. The burr height measured during the punching process can be used for automatic deburring and in-situ aligning.
