This paper shortly reviews our recent work on filled skutterudites, which are considered to be one of the most promising thermoelectric (TE) materials due to their excellent power factors and relatively low thermal conductivities. The filled skutterudite system also provides a platform for studying void filling physics/chemistry in compounds with intrinsic lattice voids. By using ab initio calculations and thermodynamic analysis, our group has made progresses in understanding the filling fraction limit (FFL) for single fillers in $CoSb_3$, and ultra-high FFLs in a few alkali-metal-filled $CoSb_3$ have been predicted and then been confirmed experimentally. FFLs in multiple-element-filled $CoSb_3$ are also investigated and anonymous filling behavior is found in a few specific systems. The calculated and measured FFLs, in both single and multiple-filled $CoSb_3$ systems, show good accordance so far. The thermal transport properties can be understood qualitatively by a phonon resonance scattering model, and it seems that a scaling rule may exist between the lattice thermal resistivity and the resonance frequency of filler atoms in filled system. Even though a few things become clear now, there are still many unsolved issues that call for further work.
The rates and activation parameters for the halide $(Cl^{-}, Br^{-}, I^{-})$TeX> exchange reactions of substituted benzenesulfonyl-chloride, $XC_6H_4SO_2Cl$(X:p-MeO, H, p-Cl, p-Br, p-NO$_2l$) in dry acetone at two temperatures have been determined. It was found that the ion-pair of metal halide,$M^{+}X^{-}$, have negligible reactivity compared to free halide ions. It was also found that the nucleophilic order is $Cl^{-}>Br^{-}>I^{-}$for electron-donating substituent, and $Cl^{-}>I^{-}>Br^{-}$ for electron-withdrawing substituents. These results and convex nature of the Hammett plot are interpreted in the light of simple $S_N2$mechanism with the bond breaking becoming important for compounds with the electron withdra-wing substituents.
Polymer bonded metalloporphyrins are synthesized by reaction between Fe(III) protoporphyrin or Mn(II) tetrakis(4-N-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin with polystyrene divinylbenzene copolymer. The spectroscopic properties of synthetic polymer bonded metalloporphyrins are investigated by using resonance Raman spectrometer. By synthetic polymer bonded metalloporphyrins as catalyst, which are model of cytochrome P-450 and peroxidases, epoxidation of olefins and oxidation of alkanes are achieved with H2O2 as oxidant. The catalytic efficiencies with polymer bonded metalloporphyrins are improved on that with corresponding nonpolymer bonded metalloporphyrins. Especially those can be reused because of stability against oxidant. Electron donating imidazole derivatives, which are attached in 5th position of central metal of metalloporphyrins, enhance the catalytic efficiencies.
The polymeric compound [{Mo(NO)_2Cl_2}n] was prepared by reductive nitrosylation of NaNO_2 and acidified FeSO_4 with MoCl_5. The reactions of [{Mo(NO)_2Cl_2}n] with unidentate and bidentate ligands afforded neutral monomeric $[Mo(NO)_2Cl_2L_2(or L-L)] in high yield (80∼90%). 3,5-Lutidine, {\gamma}-Cyanopyridine, 1,2-Phenylenediamine, 1,10-Phenanthroline, sym-Diphenylethylenediamine, 9,10-Phenanthrenequinone, 1,3-Bis(diphenylphosphino)propane and 8-Hydroxyquinoline were used as coordinating ligands. The preparation and characterization of these dinitrosylmolybdenum complexes by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, infrared, and UV-Visible spectroscopy are reported. The infrared spectra indicate that in all of the compounds prepared, the NO groups occupy cis-positions in the octahedral group of ligands.
The partial oxidation of methane with nitrous oxide on silica-supported metal-oxygen cluster compounds, known as heteropoly acids, has been studied. The effects of several variables such as reaction temperature, partial pressure of reactants, residence time, loading of the catalysts, and pretreatment temperature, on the conversion and product distribution were observed. The kinetics also has been studied. The conversion and yield of formaledehyde show maximum values at a loading of 20 wt%. The apparent reaction order of methane conversion is ca. 1.0 with respect to $CH_4$ and ca. 0.4 with respect to $N_2O$. In addition, the apparent activation energy is 30.78 kcal/mole. The addition of small quantities methane whereas water introduced to the reactant decreased the activity of catalyst under present study.
Studies on the recovery conditions and optimization process for valuable metal recovery through chemical treatment from detoxified asbestos-containing waste composed of calcium silicate, larnite, merwinite, and akermanite were conducted. The main components, Si, Ca, and Mg, of detoxified asbestos-containing waste (DACW) were separated and recovered in the form of SiO2, CaSO4, and Mg(OH)2 compounds, respectively. Each separated component was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) analysis. The recovery conditions for each component were first treating them with an acid to separate SiO2 and subsequently with H2SO4 to recover Ca in the form of sulfate, CaSO4. The remaining Mg was recovered by precipitation with Mg(OH)2 under strong basic conditions. This study suggested that it is possible to convert existing treatment process of asbestos waste by landfill through recovering the components into a resource-recycling green technology.

Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) could be stored in the form of Ca and Mg compounds including alkaline earth metal by carbonation. The possibility of $CO_2$ storage was tested by using desulfurized ash from fluidized bed type boiler as raw material. Autoclave was used for maintaining the reaction pressure and temperature for the carbonation. The analysis of weight change rate, XRD, and TG/DTA proved that more than 15 % of carbonation rate was obtained under 10 $kgf/cm^2$ and $120^{\circ}C$-10 min.

The catalytic effect of waterworks sludge on NOx removal in $BaTiO_3$pellets and sludge pellets combined packed-bed plasma reactor with plate-plate electrode geometry is measured for the various conditions. NOx removal rate is about 90[%] at $BaTiO_3$-sludge combined reactor used fresh sludge. $NO_2$ and $O_3$ as byproducts are significantly generated in only $BaTiO_3$ packed-bed plasma reactor, however, in $BaTiO_3$-sludge combined packed-bed reactor, $NO_2$ and $O_3$ are completely removed while $CO_2$ as by-products are observed from FTIR spectra. $NO_2$ and $O_3$ seem to react with metallic molecules, metal oxide, and organic compounds that are generally chlorophyll included in sludge. NOx removal rate increases with $O_2$ concentration increasing. Removal rates $NO_2$ and $O_3$ are independent of operating time and repetition measurement times.

The properties of dust collected from electric arc furnace of ferro manganese production units was investigated, and also the metallic manganese was recovered from the dust by aluminothermy process. The ferromanganese dust collected from electric arc furnace contained about 15% of manganese oxide ($Mn_3O_4$) and 9% of carbon as the contaminant, and have a 5um of 50% median diameter and irregular particle shape. The carbon contaminant in the dust could be reduced until about 0.1~0.5% level by roasting in the air at a temperature of 600~900C for 60minutes. The recovery of manganese could not be carried out using only ferromanganese dust from electric arc furnace by aluminothermy process, but the ferromanganese which contained manganese of about 92% and iron of about 5% could be obtained from the mixture of ferromanganese dusts from electric arc furnace and converter. The best mixing condition of dust fixed at electric arc furnace dust / converter dust ratio of 1:9 and 2:8, and the mixing rato of 3:7 or more could not separated the metal and slag from the reactant after aluminothermy reaction.
Recently, interest in plant-derived food additives has developed natural antioxidants, in order to alternate syn-thetic antioxidants with several disadvantages. In the present study, different organic fractions from solvent parti-tions of 80% methanol extract from Jeju benthic diatoms, Achnanthes longipes, Navicula sp. and Amphora coffeaeformis was assessed for their potential antioxidant effects. Among the solvent fractions tested, n-hexane (80.4%) and 80% methanol extract (76.6%) from A. longipes, chloroform (63.2%) from Navicula sp. and n-hexane (67.4%) from A. cof-feaeformis were effective in DPPH free radical scavenging. Fractions of chloroform (53.4%) and n-hexane (53.1%) from A. longipes exhibited higher activities on $H_2O_2$ scavengin. Fraction of n-Hexane from A. longipes exhibited the highest hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and NO. scavenging activity (56.5% and 75.6%, respectively). Aqueous residue from A. coffeaeformis (75.6%) showed the highest metal chelating effect. chloroform and ethyl acetate frac-tion of all the diatoms exhibited significant antioxidant activities in lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. In particu-lar, both chloroform and the ethyl ecetate fraction from A. longipes and A. coffeaeformis exhibited lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity significantly higher than that of $\alpha$- tocopherol. These data suggest that the Jeju benthic diatoms tested are rich in hydrophilic and hydrophobic antioxidative compounds with different antioxidative properties that can be applied in food industry.
