  • Powder synthesis using the alkoxy precursor technique exhibits processing flexibility not available in traditional high temperature solid-state reaction. With proper process control, impurities can be reduced to very low levels. The major distinction of the present work lies in the method of accomplishing the hydrolysis reaction. In the present case, water is not added to the system. Instead the metal alkoxide/alcohol solution is heated to a temperature at which water is formed through dehydration of the alcohol solvent, causing precipitation of the corresponding metal oxide (hydroxide). The present method provides a means of producing amorphous alumina.

Preparation of 0.9PMN-0.1PT ceramics by sol-gel process (졸-겔법에 의한 0.9PMN-0.1PT 소결체의 제조)

  • The preparation of 0.9PMN-0.1PT ceramics by the metal alkoxide method and the effect of excess $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$, $Pb(CH_3COO)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ are reported. The excess$ Mg(OC_2H5)_2$ addition signficantly affects the rate of perovskite phase formation in 0.9PMN-0.1PT ceramics. The sample by addition of 5 wt% excess $Mg(OC_2H5)_2$ sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr obtained perovskite single phase and showed 98% of the theoretical density. The dielectric constant of the pellets sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ was increased by the addition of 5 wt% excess $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$ and had a maximum value of 15000 at 1 kHz.

  • Sr hexaaluminate($Sr_{1-x}La_xMnAl_{11}O_{19-\alpha}$) were prepared by sol-gel method of metal alkoxide with 1-butanol or ethylene glycol as a solvent. The physical properties of prepared hexaaluminates were examined by TG/DTA, XRD and $N_2$ adsorption. When ethylene glycol was used as a solvent, the decomposition reaction and dehydroxylation reaction was observed above $400^{\circ}C$ and the temperature of the formation of a crystal structure of hexaaluminate was also increased resulting in small specific surface area and low catalytic activity of methane compared to Sr-hexaaluminate with 1-butanol.

  • Complex alkoxides were synthesized using metal alkoxide method and were then hydrolyzed to prepare the precursors using sol - gel method. Then, the precursors were calcined in order to make barium hexaaluminate. Factors affecting the material properties of the barium hexaaluminate precursors were studied and they are the kinds and amount of alcohols, and reaction time. In addition, in the course of hydrolysis, the effects of the amount of water, reaction temperature and aging time were also studied in terms of the specific surface area and average particle size of the barium hexaaluminates.

  • Ceramic is select for an alternative substrate material for high-speed circuits due to its low-thermal expansion. As, in this study, ceramic was prepared by ISG (interlayer sol-gel) process using metal salts and a metal alkoxide as the starting materials. Generally ceramic substrate is used electroless copper plating for the metallization. But it has been indicate weakely the adhesion strength between the substrate and copper layer. Therefore, this research, using the ISG process on the preparation of homogeneous and possible preparation at law temperature fabricated sol solution. Using of the dip coating method was coated for the purpose of giving the anchoring effect on the coating layer and enhancing the adhesion strength between the $Al_2$O$_3$ substrate and copper layer. This study examined primary the characteristic of the sol making condition and differential thermal analysis (DTA) X-ray diffraction (XRD) were mearsured to identify the crystal phase of heat treatment specimens. The morphology of the coated films were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). As a resurt, XRD analysis was obtained patterns of $\alpha$-cordierite after heat-treatment about 2 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$. SEM analysis could have seen a large number of voids on coated film. The more contants of$ Al_2$$O_3$ Wt% was increased the more voids was advanced. Peel adhesion strength has a maximum in the contants of the TEOS:ANE of 1:0.7 mole%. In this case, adhesion strength has been measured 1150gf, peel adhesion strength were about 10 times more than uncoated of the ceramics film.

  • Ferroelectric PZT(10/90)PZT(90/10) heterolayered thin films were fabricated by spin-coating method on the Pt/Ti/SiO$^2$/Si substrate alternately using PZT(10/90) and PZT(90/10) metal alkoxide solutions. The coating and heating procedure was repeated six times to form PZT heterolayered films. The surface, cross-sectional microstructures and thickness of the films were observed using scanning electron microscope(SEM). The relative dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the 5-coated PZT heterolayered films were 1331 and 4.8% respectively.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-zirconia bioceramics, which have excellent biocompatibility with tissue of bone and tooth and good mechanical properties, were synthesized, and their properties and biocompatibility were investigated. HAp powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67 and pH 11 by precipitation method. A fine spherical monodispersed ZrO2 powders were prepared by metal alkoxide method, and then they were partially stabilized with 10 mol% CaO by solid state reaction at 1300℃. HAp-zirconia composites were prepared by sintering of these HAp mixed with various amount CaO-partially stabillized zirconia (PSZ). When HAp containing 15 wt% PSZ with 10 mol% CaO (PSZ(10C)) were sintered at 1250℃, it was prevented to decompose into TCP and ZrO2 was uniformly dispersed at HAp matrix. Mechanical strength of these sintered bodies were increased by addition of 15 wt% PSZ(10C), the bending strength of compacts fired at 1250℃ was 165 MPa. HAp-PSZ composites chemically bonded each other in Ringer's solution and the component of bonded layer was HAp. These composites did not prevent cell-growing and exhibit any cytotoxic effects.

  • The effect of excess Pb contents on the etching of PZT thin films and their electrical properties has been investigated. Ferroelectric PZT(53/47) thin films were prepared by the metal alkoxide-based Sol-Gel method, in which they were spin-coating on P7Ti/Si02/Si substrate using the PZT(53/47) stock solutions with various excess Pb contents. Etching of PZT film was performed using planar inductively coupled Ar/Cl$_2$/BCl$_3$ plasma. The etch rate of PZT film was 2450 $\AA$/min at Ar(20)/BCl$_3$(80) gas mixing ratio and substrate temperature of 8$0^{\circ}C$.

  • $(Na_{0.5}LaK_{0.5})NbO_3$ (NKN) thin films were fabricated by the alkoxide-based MOD method. NKN stock solutions were made spin-coated onto the Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrate. The structural properties of the NKN thin films examined by x-ray diffraction. The perovskite phase was obtained as a function of the annealing temperature from $550^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The crystallinity and grain size of the NKN thin films increased with increasing annealing temperature. The dielectric constants and loss of the NKN thin films annealed at $650^{\circ}C$ ($t_{eq}$=2.35 nm) showed 323 and 0.025.
