  • In liquid metal fast breeder reactors, postulated failures of the plant protection system may lead to serious unprotected accidental consequences. Unprotected transients are generically categorized as transient overpower accidents and transient under cooling accidents. In both cases, core meltdown may occur and this can lead to a molten fuel coolant interaction (MFCI). The understanding of MFCI phenomena is essential for study of debris coolability and characteristics during post-accident heat removal. Sodium is used as coolant in liquid metal fast breeder reactors. Viewing inside sodium at elevated temperature is impossible because of its opaqueness. In the present study, a methodology to depict MFCI phenomena using a flat panel detector based imaging system (i.e., real time radiography) is brought out using a woods metal-water experimental facility which simulates the $UO_2-Na$ interaction. The developed imaging system can capture attributes of the MFCI process like jet breakup length, jet front velocity, fragmented particle size, and a profile of the debris bed using digital image processing methods like image filtering, segmentation, and edge detection. This paper describes the MFCI process and developed imaging methodology to capture MFCI attributes which are directly related to the safe aspects of a sodium fast reactor.

  • The dramatic increase in the depth of a weld bead penetration has been demonstrated by welding a stainless steel in GTA (Gas-Tungsten-Arc) process with activating flux which consists of oxides and halides. However, there is no commonly agreed mechanism fer the effect of flux on the process. In order to make clear the mechanism, each behavior of the arc md the weld pool in GTA process with activating flux is observed in comparison with a conventional GTA process. A constricted anode root is shown in GTA process with the activating flux, whereas a diffuse anode root is shown in the conventional process. These anode roots are related strongly to metal vapor from the weld pool and the metal vapor is also related to temperature distributions on the weld pool surface. Furthermore, it is suggested that a balance between the Marangoni force and the drag force of the cathode jet should dominate the direction of re-circulatory flow in the weld pool. The electromagnetic force encourages the inward re-circulatory flow due to the constricted anode root in the case with flux. The difference in flow direction in the weld pool changes the geometry or depth/width ratio of weld bead penetration.

  • Platinum catalysts supported on the mesoporous material synthesized from Y zeolite were applied to synthesis of jet-fuel through n-octadecane hydroupgrading. The mesoporous aluminosolicate, $MMZ_{HY}$ was synthesized using Y zeolite as its framework source. The effect of the addition of Mg to $Pt/MMZ_{HY}$ catalyst for n-octadecane hydroupgrading was investigated. Catalyst characterization was performed with X-ray diffraction, $N_2$ adsorption, temperature-programmed reduction in hydrogen flow, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. The high yield of jet-fuel over the $PtMg(2.0)/MMZ_{HY}$ can be attributed not only to the higher dispersion of Pt metal and higher reducibility, but also the higher amount of acid sites and higher strength of acid sites. The selectivity to iso-paraffin in the jet-fuel fraction could be reached above 80% over the optimized $PtMg/MMZ_{HY}$ catalyst.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate cooling performance of high power LEDs from 100 to 200 W class by using a jet impingement cooling module. The numerical analysis of forced convection cooling inside cooling module is carried out using a multi-purpose CFD software, FLUENT 6.3. In the experiments, the LED cooling system consists of jet impingement module, heat exchanger, water reservoir, and pump. In the present study, the cooling performance of jet impingement cooling module is investigated to determine the effect of the heat sink types on the impinging surface, the space and length of fins. Numerical and experimental studies show the reasonable agreement of LED metal PCB temperature between those results and give the optimized design parameters such as the space of fin and the length of fin. Also, the pin fin type of heat sink is found to be more efficient than the plate type heat sink in jet impingement cooling.

  • Direct solid analysis of various kinds of metal samples has been conducted by glow discharge. In this laboratory, the gas-jet assisted glow discharge(GJGD) device has been developed and characterized. The effect of changes in applied current, cell pressure and flow rate on atomic emission signals obtained from a jet-assisted cathodic sputtering was investigate. The emission intensities of Cu, Zn, and Ar were measured. They were increased with the current. But the intensities were decreased by increasing the flow rate of argon due to the diffusion and transportation of particles into plasma. By increasing the pressure of the cell, the intensities were greatly decreased because of enhancement of redeposition onto the surface of the sample.

  • The significance of soil environment is gradually increased due to the soil and underwater contamination caused by petroleum leak accidents. It requires a high cost and long period for the purification of soil compared with other environmental matrix such as water and air. For this reason, it has been embroiled in a legal conflict to find the pollution source and charge of cleanup. In this study, we analyzed the physical properties and typical additives of jet fuel to search a method that can distinguish kerosene and jet fuel contamination. In particular, the chemical marker in kerosene was visualized by the developer and the additives in jet fuel, such as antioxidant and metal deactivator were detected by GC-MS. This study could be used to judge petroleum source at soil contaminant accident sites.

  • In this study, DC (Direct current) type steam plasma igniter is developed for effective ignition of high-energy density metal aluminum and gas temperature is measured by emission spectrum of OH radical. Because of the ultra-high gas temperature, the DC plasma jet is measured by Boltzmann plot method which is the non-contact optical technique and spectrum comparison-analysis. And both methods were applied to experiment after accurate verification. As a result, we could identify that plasma jet temperature is 2900 K ~ 5800 K in the 30 mm range from the nozzle tip.

  • Ni alloy steel is able to use during long time because of good acid and corrosion resistance. So, it's research has focused on developing the alternative alloy which is economically feasible. Recently, consumption of Kovar steel is gradually increased in field of the jet engine and the gas turbine because of its low thermal expansive characteristics. The specimens of Kovar steel(29%Ni-17%Co) contain 0.00%C, 0.03%C, 0.06%C, 0.10%C and 0.20%C, respectively. Ingots are manufactured by VIM(vacuum induction melting furnace) and then specimens are made by automatic hot rolling after heat treatment. Strength of Kovar steel according to carbon contents is estimated by hardness, tensile and impact test. Hardness of the 0.20%C specimen is more improved approximately 14.4% than one of base metal. Its strength increases 32.4% of a base metal, and its impact energy is also enhance 11.5%.

  • The corrugated stainless steel tubing(CSST) for the fuel gas piping system can be installed easily and quickly. It is often constructed under the ceiling and the wall which has a good flexibility and installation in comparison with iron pipe. However, the quality of the CSST is determined to depend upon the welding skill of stainless steel tubing. In this study, it is tested by controlling jet point of Ar as inert and cooling gas, and also compared with the bead state of welding point and the performance. As a result, it has the best condition when the jet point of Ar is located behind $5{\sim}10mm$ of the welding point.

  • Recently, with the rapid development in the oceanic systems such as the oceanic structures and vessel, there occurs much interest in the impingement erosion-corrosion. In this paper, Cu-metal was tested by using of erosion apparatus with water-jet type and was investigated under the behaviour of impingement erosion-corrosion according to various environmental conditions, and the properties of Cu-metal were evaluated through the measurement by weight loss, weight loss rate, protective efficiency. The results were compared with those obtained using Cu-metal applied to cathodic protection and Cu-alloys added to Zn or Al-metal. As a basis of those results, the best protective efficiencies could be taken as using cathodic protection method and Cu-alloy with Al & Zn material addings, and will be suggested as the fundamental data of the anti-impingement erosion-corrosion on Cu-metal of impeller material for oceanic centrifugal pump.
