  • In this paper, the effects of a metal plane on the performance of a meandered slot RFID antenna are evaluated in a real environment, and 3 metal plane cases are considered (the most likely scenarios in which metal conductive materials are placed near the tag antenna). The metal plane effects can be categorized as matching degradation and antenna gain variation. First, matching degradation due to the antenna's induced mutual impedance is experimentally investigated. In addition, the gain variation is investigated to figure out the change in the radiation characteristics. With the derived antenna parameters, the read range is calculated with the Friis transmission equation and measured to analyze the effects of a metal plane on RFID system performance. The calculated and measured read range varies from 9.3 m to 19.1 m as the distance between the RFID antenna and the metal plane changes.

  • Metal treated activated carbons are prepared using various metals. Adsorption behaviors, morphologies, as well as antibacterial effects of metal treated samples are compared before and after solvent washing. Adsorption isotherms are used to characterize the porous structure of metal treated activated carbons before and after the solvent washing with acetone or ethyl alcohol. From these data, it is noticed that the changes in physicochemical properties of metal treated activated carbons depend on the solvents employed. Similar results are observed from BET data obtained from nitrogen adsorption isotherms. From scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies, the changes in shape and size of metal particles are observed after the samples are washed with solvents. These changes result in different blocking effects, which, in turn, affect the adsorption behavior of metal treated activated carbons. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the samples treated with different metals are different each other. High intense sharp peaks attributed to metals are observed from silver treated samples, while the peaks are not observed from copper treated samples. To compare thermodynamic behavior of metal treated activated carbons washed with different type of solvents, differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis is carried out. The analysis shows similar endothermic curves for all of the samples. Finally, antibacterial effects of metal treated activated carbon against Escherichia coli are discussed. Comparing the effects among the metals employed, highest effects are obtained from Cd, while lowest effects are obtained from Cu. Antibacterial activity becomes higher with the increase of the amount of metals treated, Optimum concentrations of metals to treat activated carbons, obtained from a shake flask test, are known to be 0.4, 0.1, and 0.6 moles for Ag, Cd, and Cu, respectively.

  • In this study, we investigated the inhibition effects of single and mixed heavy metal ions ($Zn^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;and\;Cd^{2+}$) on iron oxidation by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. Effects of metals on the iron oxidation activity of A. ferrooxidans are categorized into four types of patterns according to its oxidation behavior. The results indicated that the inhibition effects of the metals on the iron oxidation activity were noncompetitive inhibitions. We proposed a reduced inhibition model, along with the reduced inhibition constant ($\alpha_i$), which was derived from the inhibition constant ($K_I$) of individual metals and represented the tolerance of a given inhibitor relative to that of a reference inhibitor. This model was used to evaluate the toxicity effect (inhibition effect) of metals on the iron oxidation activity of A. ferrooxidans. The model revealed that the iron oxidation behavior of the metals, regardless of metal systems (single, binary, ternary, or quaternary), is closely matched to that of any reference inhibitor at the same reduced inhibition concentration, $[I]_{reduced}$, which defines the ratio of the inhibitor concentration to the reduced inhibition constant. The model demonstrated that single metal systems and mixed metal systems with the same reduced inhibitor concentrations have similar toxic effects on microbial activity.

  • The response of the freshwater microalga, Chlorella vulgaris, to heavy metal stress was examined based on chlorophyll fluorescence analysis to assess the toxic effects of heavy metals in freshwater ecosystems. When toxic effects were analyzed using regular chlorophyll fluorescence analysis, photosystem II activity($F_v/F_m$) decreased significantly when exposed to $Cu^{2+}$ and $Hg^{2+}$ for 12 h, and decreased in the order of $Hg^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Cd^{2+}>Ni^{2+}$ when exposed for 24h. The effective photochemical quantum yield(${\phi}{\prime}_{PSII}$), chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio($R_{Fd}$), minimal fluorescence yield($F_o$), and non-photochemical quenching(NPQ), but not photochemical quenching(qP), responded sensitively to $Hg^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$. These results suggest that $F_v/F_m$, as well as ${\phi}{\prime}_{PSII}$, $R_{Fd}$, $F_o$, and NPQ could be used to assess the effects of heavy metal ions in freshwater ecosystems. However, because many types of heavy metal ions and toxic compounds co-occur under natural conditions, it is difficult to assess heavy metal toxicity in freshwater ecosystems. When Chlorella was exposed to heavy metal ions for 12 or 24h, $F_v/F_m$ and maximal fluorescence yield($F_m$) changed in response to $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ based on image analysis. However, assessing quantitatively the toxic effects of several heavy metal ions is challenging.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanomaterials on a metal substrate by an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame was illustrated. Stainless steel plates were used for the catalytic metal substrate. The effects of catalyst metal particles were investigated through $Fe(NO_3){_3}$ (ferric nitrate, nonahydrate) and $Ni(NO_3){_2}$ (nickel nitrate, hexahydrate). Carbon nanotubes and nanofibers with diameters of $30{\sim}70nm$ were found on the substrate for the case of using SUS304 substrates only and using them with metal nitrates. In case of using metal nitrates, due to the easy activation of the metal particles, the formation and growth of carbon nanomaterials were occurred in the lower temperature region than that of using SUS304 substrates only.

  • Although the sub-chronic toxic effects of metal on fishes are well documented, that is mostly in fishes exposed to waterborne metal but few studied have been conducted on the effects of dietary metal (Handy, 1996). The realization that dietary uptake of metal is a major cause of long-term contamination in wild fish has renewed interest in the nutritional and toxicological effects of metal in the food of fishes (Handy, 1996). • In the current paper, the effects of initial slug design on the earring of an Al rectangular battery case manufactured by impact extrusion were studied. During impact extrusion, non-uniform metal flow between the long and the short sides of the battery case leads to earring, which is subsequently trimmed. Process parameters such as friction, aspect ratio of the battery case, the die shape and the forming temperature tend to induce earring because they cause greater non-uniform metal flow. Large aspect ratio of the battery case and high friction between slug and die can greatly affect the earring of a rectangular battery case. To make a rectangular battery case without earring, it is necessary to control metal flow uniformly during impact extrusion. One of the ways to reduce the earring is to control the metal flow of slug at the initial upsetting stage. To analyze the effects of the initial slug design on earring, FE analysis was conducted using DEFORM 3D. Two types of initial slug designs were evaluated where volume was removed along either the width or thickness directions. The results show that the initial slug design can be effective in adjusting the uniformity of metal flow.

  • The effects of the diffusible hydrogen content and hardness on the cold cracking in high strength weld metal were investigated. The diffusible hydrogen contents were influenced by welding parameters such as the voltage and contact tip-to-work distance (CTWD). The diffusible hydrogen content increased with an increase in voltage. However, it was decreased with an increase in CTWD. CTWD also influenced the weld metal hardness, especially when the wire used had a higher strength than the base metal. This showed that weld metal hardness had a more powerful effect on weld metal cold cracking than the diffusible hydrogen content in this experiment.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine effects of combustion retardation for paper filter impregnated metal salts by measurement of extinguishing concentration, CO concentration, and limiting oxygen index(LOI, ASTM D 2863). And thermal stability analysis using DSC was carried out. In case of extinguishing concentration, $NH_4H_2PO_4$ showed excellent effect of combustion retardation. The result of LOI measurement showed that metal salts possessed good effect of combustion retardation. And thermal analysis using DSC showed that these metal salts possessed thermal stability. In case of CO concentration, CO concentration was increasing because of imperfect combustion process due to combustion retardation effect of metal salts.
