  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal effect and variation of contaminated water by various water treatment processes using sediment filter, activated carbon, photocatalysis, reverse osmosis, ultra violet sterilizer and ultra filtration. The removal effect of chloride and trace metal was low by activated carbon and ultra filter but high in reverse osmosis. The removal effect of bacteria and E. coli was low by activated carbon and membrane filter system using activated carbon but high in impregnated activated carbon. The removal effect of TCE was low in sand and ultra filter system as compared with activated carbon. Ultra filtration process was effective for purify agricultural water without E.coli. Reverse osmosis was effective to remove heavy metal and activated carbon was effective to remove halogenated organic chemical compound. The flux and the removal effect of COD in spiral wound ultrafilter were higher than the hollow fiber ultrafilter.

  • Calix[4]crown-6-2,4-bis(2-hydroxyethyl ether) (2), which has crown-6 moieties at the 1- and 3-positions and hydroxyethyl functions at the 2- and 4-positions, was prepared for the syntheses of polyester 3 and polyurethane 4 by reactions with adipoyl chloride and hexamethylene diisocyanate, respectively. The ion binding characteristics of monomer 2 and polymers 3 and 4 toward alkali and alkali earth metal ions were measured by liquid-liquid extraction from the aqueous phase into the organic phase. We observed that the polyurethane 4 has a higher binding affinity toward various metal cations when compared to polyester 3, which exhibits cesium ion selectivity.

  • Lithium cyanoaluminum hydride (LCAH) was prepared by the metal cation exchange reaction of sodium cyanoaluminum hydride with lithium chloride in tetrahydrofuran. The reducing characteristics of LCAH were explored systematically by the reaction with selected organic compounds containing representative functional groups under the standardized conditions (tetrahydrofuran, 0 ${^{\circ}C}$). The reducing ability of LCAH was also compared with of the sodium derivative, sodium cyanoaluminum hydride (SCAH). Generally, the reducing behavior of LCAH resembles that of SCAH closely, but the reactivity of LCAH toward representative organic functional groups appeared to be stronger than that of SCAH. Thus, the regent reduces carbonyl compounds, epoxides, amides, nitriles, disulfides, carboxylic acids and their acyl derivatives to the corresponding alcohols or amines, at a relatively faster rate than that of SCAH. The cyano substitution, a strong election-withdrawing group, diminishes the reducing power of the parent metal aluminum hydrides and hence effects the alteration of their reducing characteristics.

  • Nitroso-2-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid, disodium salt (NRS) was used as an organic ligand to prepare basic drug-selective polymeric membrane electrode. The sensing membrane of the electrode consited of basic drug-meta1(II)-NRS as an ion-exchanger site in a poly(vinyl chloride) matrix plasticized with 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE). The metal ions used were Fe$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$, Ni$^{2+}$ and Cu$^{2+}$. The electrodes exhibited fast and wide linear response in the basic drug concentration of 10$^{-5}$ ∼10$^{-3}$ mol/l with a response slope of 50∼60 mV/decade in a buffer solution of pH 4∼8. The electrodes exhibited good selectivity for many basic compounds.mpounds.

  • The transition metal carbonylate, PPN+(${\eta}^5-MeCp)Mn(CO)_2Cl^-$ undergoes a novel ligand substitution reaction with PR3 (R=Me, Et, OEt, $C_6H_5$ in THF at elevated temperatures (40 $^{\circ}C$ up to 60 $^{\circ}C)$ under the pseudo-first-order reaction conditions (usually 20-fold excess of PR3 with respect to metal carbonylate concentrations) where chloride is displaced by PR3. The reaction follows overall first order dependence on [(${\eta}^5-MeCp)Mn(CO)_2Cl^-$]; however, the negative entropy changes of activation (${\Delta}S^{\neq}$=-19.3 e.u. for $P(OEt)_3$; ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$=-16.4 e.u. for $PPh_3$) suggest the existence of the intermediate, ((η3-MeCp)Mn(CO)2(THF)Cl-, which eventually transforms to the product (${\eta}^5-MeCp)Mn(CO)_2(PR_3)$.

  • Metallothioneins (MTs) are a go up of heavy metal-binding proteins characterized by cystein-rich low molecular weight(6000 - 10.000 Da). They plays a major role in the detoxification of heavy metals and also in scavenging of superoxide radicals. They are known to be induced by heavy metals in various organs of different species and represent a potential biomarker of aquatic heavy metal contamination. (omitted)

  • In rebar concrete structure, the corrosion of rebar can arise the deterioration of concrete structure and may affect the safety of the whole system. Recently, several methods for corrosion protection have been used and are more important for concrete structure using the sand including chloride ion. Among several protections, electrical cathodic protection has been expected to be one of the most useful methods in corrosion protection for reinforcement of concrete structures. The anode for cathodic protection needs high current density, high corrosion resistance and low overvoltage. To fill up the special qualities, the insoluble anodes were developed and these anodes were coated with metal oxide of $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$, $RuO_2$, and $IrO_2$. Lifetime of these anodes can be one of the important factors affecting the lifetime of concrete structure in cathodic protection. In this work, several anodes were made by sol-gel method and thermal decomposition method and the lifetime of these anodes was evaluated by NACE international standard test method, TM 0294-94. Also, we did analyze the properties of coated metal oxides.

  • An ion implanter, which can serve as a metal-ion supply, has been constructed and performance tested. Copper ions are generated and extracted from a Bernas ion source with a heating crucible that provides feed gases to sustain the plasma. Sable arc plasmas can be sustained in the ion source for a crucible temperature in excess of $350^{\circ}C$. Stable extraction of the ions is possible for arc Currents less than 0.3 A. Arc currents increase with the induced power of a block cathode and the transverse field in the ion source. $Cu^+$ ions in the extracted beam are separated using a dipole magnet. A $20{\mu}A$ $Cu^+$ ion current can be extracted with a 0.2 A arc current. The ion current can support a dose of $10^{16}ions/cm^2$ over an area of $15\;cm^2$ within a few hours.

  • The sulfatation of chitosan, by reaction with chlorosulfonic acid under controlled conditions, allowed increasing the pH range of chitosan solubility. The biopolymer was characterized using FTIR and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and titration analysis and it was tested for mercury recovery by polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF). In slightly alkaline conditions (i.e., pH 8) mercury recovery was possible and at saturation of the polymer the molar ratio $-NH_2$/Hg(II) tended to 2.6. Polymer recycling was possible changing the pH to 2 and the polymer was reused for 3 cycles maintaining high metal recovery. The presence of chloride ions influences metal speciation and affinity for the polymer and "playing" with metal speciation allowed using the PEUF process for mercury separation from cadmium; at pH 11 the formation of hydroxo-complexes of Hg(II) limits it retention. Cake formation reveals the predominant controlling step for permeation flux.

  • Chloride baths for electrodeposited Ni thin films were fabricated by dissolving metal Ni powders with the mixed solution consisting of HCl and de-ionized water. Current efficiency, residual stress, surface morphology and microstructure of Ni films with the change of metal ion ($Ni^{2+}$) concentrations in the plating solution were studied. Current efficiency was measured to be more than 90% with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentrations in the plating solution. Residual stress of Ni thin film was increased from about 400 to 780 MPa with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration from 0.2 to 0.5 M. It is gradually decreased to 650 MPa at 0.9 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration. Smooth surface morphologies were observed over 0.3 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration, but nodule surface morphology at 0.2 M. Ni films consist of FCC(111), FCC(200), FCC(220) and FCC(311) peaks in XRD patterns. Preferred orientation of FCC(111) was observed and its intensity was slightly decreased with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration. The average grain size was slightly increased at 0.3 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration and then slightly decreased with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration.
