This study was designed for comparison of shear bond strengths and failure patterns of four experimental groups which combinated mesh-backed metal brackets and texture based ceramic brackets (Transcend series $2000^{(TM)}$) with chemically cured resin (Mono $Lok2^{(TM)}$) and visible light cured resin $(Transbond^{(TM)})$. Brackets were bonded on the extracted human bicuspids, after etching them by manufacturer's recommand, and the shear bond strengths were measured on the Instron machine after 24 hrs passed in the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath. The results were as follows. 1. Ceramic brackets, transcend series $2000^{(TM)}$, bonded with $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$ showed statistically higher shear bond strength than mesh-backed metal brackets bonded with $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$. 2. There was no significant difference in shear bond strengths between metal and ceramic brackets bonded with $(Transbond^{(TM)})$. 3. Ceramic brackets bonded with both $(Transbond^{(TM)})$) and $MonoLok2^{(TM)}$ showed primarily fractures between brackets adhesive interface. 4. Enamel crack was not found in anyone specimen.
This study evaluated the effect of degassing on the ceramic bond strength of two Ni-Cr alloys under varying holding time at the upper limit temperature and atmospheric conditions. Metal specimens were divided into 5 groups for each alloy according to degassing conditions prior to porcelain application no degassing, degassing under vacuum without hold, degassing under vacuum with hold for 5 min. and 10 min. respectively at the upper limit temperature and degassing in air. Total number of metal ceramic specimens was eighty and each group had eight specimens. The ceramic bond strength was measured by four-point flexural test using Instron and the fractured surface was examined under SEM. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Degassing in air improved the ceramic bond strength of Ni-Cr alloys. 2. In degassing under vacuum, hold at the upper limit temperature was advantageous to the ceramic bonding of Ni-Cr alloys. 3. After ceramic metal bond test, metal surfaces were partially covered with the thin porcelain layer, and the cohesive failures in porcelain were predominant in groups showing higher ceramic bond strength.
Statement of problem: For the long-term success of removable partial dentures, the bonding between metal framework and denture base resin is one of the important factors. To improve bonding between those, macro-mechanical retentive form that is included metal framework design has been generally used. However it has been known that sealing at the interface between metal framework and denture base resin is very weak, because this method uses mechanical bonding. Purpose: Many studies has been made to find a simple method which induces chemical bond, now various bonding system is applied to clinic. In this experiment, shear bond strengths of heat-cured denture base resin to the surface-treated Co-Cr alloy were measured before and after thermocycling. Chemically treated groups with Alloy $Primer^{TM}$, Super-Bond $C&B^{TM}$, and tribochemically treated group with $Rocatec^{TM}$ system were compared to the beadtreated control group. The data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA. Result: 1. Shear bond strength of bead-treated group is highest, and Alloy $Primer^{TM}$ treated group, Super-Bond $C&B^{TM}$ treated group, RocatecTM system treated group were followed. Statistically significant differences were found in each treated group(p<0.05). 2. Surface treatment and thermocycling affected shear bond strength(p<0.05), however there was no interaction between two factors(p>0.05). 3. Shear bond strengths of bead-treated group and Alloy $Primer^{TM}$ treated group showed no statistically significant difference before and after thermocycling(p>0.05), and those of Super-Bond $C&B^{TM}$ treated group and $Rocatec^{TM}$ system treated group showed statistically significant difference after thermocycling(p<0.05).
The effect of apparent porosity of the fired ceramics, metallizing temperature, and metallizing mixtures on the bond strength in metal-to-ceramic seals was investigated. Three different metallizing compounds were metallized on dense alumina bodies at 1300~$1500^{\circ}C$ in dry hydrogen atmosphere. Bond strength between metal and alumina body was measured by means of nstron test machine. The greater bond strength was observed as the apparent porosity and metallizing temperature was increased. This work indicated that the glassy phase in metallizing mixture, having had sufficient fluidity to migrate into the alumina body, reacted with alumina and thereby forming strong metal-ceramic interface bond. It also showed that the glassy phase having higher thermal expansion cofficient than molybdenum might contribute to the strong bond formation by providing compressive stress around the molybdenum particle.
To compare the castability of various alloys popularly used in Korea for porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations, author selected Degudent G as precious alloy, J.P. 92 as semiprecious alloy and Vera Bond, Rexillium III, Unit Bond, Fine Bond as non precious alloys. With nylon lines and gauge waxes, author made the wax patterns for the castability comparison test. In the same conditions, wax patterns were invested, burned out and cast. Author obtained the following results from this study. 1. The castability of Degudent G as precious alloy for porcelain-fused-to-metal crown and bridge was the best of all. 2. The castability of nonprecious alloys was less than Degudent G as precious alloy, but their differences were not large. 3. The castability of Rexillium III is the best of all nonprecious alloys and that of Vera Bond, Unit Bond had nearly the same results. 4. Semiprecious alloy (J.P. 92) was less castable than nonprecious alloys.
PURPOSE. Pre-surface treatments of coping materials have been recommended to enhance the bonding to the veneering ceramic. Little is known on the effect on shear bond strength, particularly with new coping material. The aim of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength of veneering ceramic to three coping materials: i) metal alloy (MA), ii) zirconia oxide (ZO), and iii) lithium disilicate (LD) after various pre-surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-two (n = 32) discs were prepared for each coping material. Four pre-surface treatments were prepared for each sub-group (n = 8); a) no treatment or control (C), b) sandblast (SB), c) acid etch (AE), and d) sandblast and acid etch (SBAE). Veneering ceramics were applied to all discs. Shear bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons tests. RESULTS. Mean shear bond strengths were obtained for MA ($19.00{\pm}6.39MPa$), ZO ($24.45{\pm}5.14MPa$) and LD ($13.62{\pm}5.12MPa$). There were statistically significant differences in types of coping material and various pre-surface treatments (P<.05). There was a significant correlation between coping materials and pre-surface treatment to the shear bond strength (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Shear bond strength of veneering ceramic to zirconia oxide was higher than metal alloy and lithium disilicate. The highest shear bond strengths were obtained in sandblast and acid etch treatment for zirconia oxide and lithium disilicate groups, and in acid etch treatment for metal alloy group.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. When veneering composite resin-metal restoration is prepared, the fact that bond strength between Ti and composite resin is relatively weak should be considered. PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the shear bond strength between the veneering composite resin and commercial pure (CP) Ti / Ti-6Al-4V alloy according to the method of surface treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The disks were cast by two types of metal. Their surfaces were treated by sandblasting, metal conditioner, TiN coating and silicoating respectively. After surface treatment, the disks were veneered by composite resin (Tescera$^{TM}$, Bisco, USA) which is 5 mm in diameter and 3 mm in thickness. The specimens were stored in water at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, and then evaluated for their shear bond strength by universal testing machine (STM-$5^{(R)}$, United Calibration, USA). These values were statistically analyzed. RESULTS. 1. All methods of surface treatment were used in this study satisfied the requirements of ISO 10477 which is the standard of polymer-based crown and bridge materials. 2. The metal conditioner treated group showed the highest value in shear bond strength of CP Ti, silicoated group, TiN coated group, sandblasted group, in following order. 3. The silicoated group showed the highest value in shear bond strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, metal conditioner treated group, sandblasted group, TiN coated group, in following order. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, all methods of surface treatment used in this study are clinically available.
This study compared and analyzed changes to the mechanical characteristics to nonprecious metal alloy for porcelain fused to metal crowns when it's repetitively used without the addition of new alloy. Metal samples were made with the Verabond V nonprecious metal alloy. Those samples to measure tensile and yield strength were made in the standardized design(ISO 22674), those to measure bond strength in the $25mm{\times}3mm{\times}0.5mm$ format, and those to measure hardness in the $10mm{\times}10mm{\times}1mm$ format. A ceramic to measure bond strength was made at the center of the metal sample in the length of $8{\ss}{\AE}$ by using Noritaker Super Porcelain EX-3. Ten samples were prepared for one, three and five repetitions of casting each. The test results were as follows: 1. The more casting was repeated, the more significantly tensile strength dropped. 2. The more casting was repeated, the more significantly yield strength dropped. 3. Repetitive casting didn't cause significant changes to bond strength. 4. The Vickers hardness significantly fell with increasing repetitions of casting. There were no changes to bond strength observed with the increasing number of repeating casting. But tensile strength, yield strength, and Vickers hardness decreased. Those results indicate that repeated casting can affect durability and that careful attention should be paid by avoiding repetitive use or excessive increase of uses when no new alloy is added.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface treatment of fractured metal-ceramic crown on bond strength of porcelain repair resin. The specimens were divided into two groups for metal specimens add five groups for porcelain specimens by surface treatment methods. the metal specimens were treated by 2 methods. : micro-sandblasting with $50{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide and grinding with diamond bur. Bonding strength of a thermal sprayed coating is difficult to measure using a conventional pull-off test method. Scratch test is a potential alternative testing method. An adhesive and a cohesive bond strength of the coating can be measured by the pull-off test while the scratch test performed on the cross-section of the thermal sprayed coating can only demonstrate the cohesive bond strength of the coating. Nevertheless, it is still beneficial to perform the scratch testing on the cross-section of the coating for the sake of comparison thus providing an alternative to the pull-off test. The scratch test method can reduce testing time and cost in the long run due to a significant cost reduction in consumables and energy and time saving from the curing step of the glue used in the pull-off test. This research investigates the possibility of using the scratch test to measure the cohesive bond strength of Mo/NiCrBSi composite coating. The results from the pull-off test and the scratch test indicate that the cohesive bond strengths of the Mo composite coating show similar trend and that the cohesive bond strength are increased when increasing NiCrBSi content.
