  • Many studies have reported ${\beta}$-catenin involvement in the development of esophageal carcinoma (EC), but its prognostic significance for EC patients remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to explore the issue in detail. After searching PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, we included a total of ten relevant studies. We pooled the overall survival (OS) data using RevMan 5.2 software. The results showed that aberrant expression of ${\beta}$-catenin was associated with a significant increase of mortality risk (hazard ratio 1.71, 95%CI 1.46-2.01; p<0.00001). Subgroup analyses further suggested that aberrant expression of ${\beta}$-catenin resulted in poor OS of EC patients regardless of histological type of EC, study location or criteria for aberrant expression of ${\beta}$-catenin, and the sensitivity analyses revealed that the result was robust. The meta-analysis revealed that aberrant expression of ${\beta}$-catenin could be a predicative factor of poor prognosis for EC patients.

  • Caching in meta-search engines can improve the response time of users' request. We describe the cache scheme in our meta-search engine in terms of its architecture and operational flow. In particular, we propose a popularity-driven cache algorithm that utilizes popularities of queries to determine cached data to be purged. The popularity is a value that represents the normalized occurrence frequency of user queries. This paper presents how to collect popular queries and how to calculate query popularities. An empirical performance evaluation of the popularity-driven caching with the traditional schemes (i.e., least recently used (LRU) and least frequently used (LFU)) has been carried out on a collection of real data. In almost all cases, the proposed replacement policy outperforms LRU and LFU.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of Kinesio taping (KT) for balance and gait in patients with stroke through meta-analysis of studies conducted in Korea. Methods: RISS, Science on, and DBPia were the three databases used to collect articles on KT. Keywords such as "Stroke," "Kinesio taping," "Elasticity taping," and "Taping" were used to search for published articles. We systematically searched from the inception of each database to November 2020. Interventions and comparisons were KT and without KT. Outcome measures were the timed up and go (TUG) and 10-meter walking tests (10MWT). Consequently, six studies were selected for the second screening using meta-analyses. Results: Based on the results of the meta-analysis, comparison between patients with and without KT showed that KT was effective for TUG (ES: 2.51, 95% CI: 2.12 to 2.90); however, it was not effective for 10MWT (ES: 0.79, 95% CI: -0.04 to 1.62). Conclusion: The current evidence suggests that KT is more effective than without KT interventions for balance function in post-stroke patients. However, more well-conducted randomized controlled trials are required in the future.

  • Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of extruded and unextruded feeding on the performance, milk composition, digestibility and ruminal fermentation of dairy cows through a meta-analysis. Methods: The database was compiled from 53 studies in Scopus and PubMed. The data were analyzed using a random effects model in OpenMEE software. Extruded feed was grouped as the experiment group while and the others as control group. The bias of publication in the main parameter of dairy performance was evaluated by a funnel plot. Results: The result showed that extruded feed enhanced the milk yield, dry matter and crude protein digestibility, butyrate and valerate acid production (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the extruded feed significantly decreased the milk fat and protein concentration (p<0.05). Also, the iso-butyrate and iso-valerate in unextruded feeding was significantly higher than the extruded feed (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was concluded from the meta-analysis that extruded feed effectively improved the milk production and milk lactose concentration, dry matter and protein digestibility, but not the milk fat and protein concentration.

  • Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of wilted and unwilted silage on various parameters, such as nutrient content, fermentation quality, bacterial populations, and digestibility. Methods: Thirty-six studies from Scopus were included in the database and analyzed using a random effects model in OpenMEE software. The studies were grouped into two categories: wilting silage (experiment group) and non-wilting silage (control group). Publication bias was assessed using a fail-safe number. Results: The results showed that wilting before ensiling significantly increased the levels of dry matter, water-soluble carbohydrates, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber, compared to non-wilting silage (p<0.05). However, wilting significantly decreased dry matter losses, lactic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid, and ammonia levels (p<0.05). The pH, crude protein, and ash contents remained unaffected by the wilting process. Additionally, the meta-analysis revealed no significant differences in bacterial populations, including lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and aerobic bacteria, or in vitro dry matter digestibility between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Wilting before ensiling significantly improved silage quality by increasing dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrates, as well as reducing dry matter losses, butyric acid, and ammonia. Importantly, wilting did not have a significant impact on pH, crude protein, or in vitro dry matter digestibility.

  • In this study, a meta-analysis of fecal bacteria in dogs was conducted using 16S rRNA gene sequences that have been recovered from cloning and Sanger sequencing. For this meta-analysis, we retrieved all 16S rRNA gene sequences recovered from fecal bacteria in dogs in the RDP database (Release 11, Update 3). A total of 420 sequences were identified from the RDP database, 42 of which were also recovered from cultured isolates. The 420 sequences were assigned to five phyla, of which Firmicutes was the most predominant phylum, accounting for 55.2% of all 420 sequences. Bacteroidetes was the second most predominant phylum, accounting for 32.1% of the 420 sequences, followed by Actinobacteria (6.4%), Fusobacteria (3.8%), and Proteobacteria (2.4%). The genus Bacteroides within Bacteroidetes was the largest, representing 30.0% of all 420 sequences, while the putative genus Clostridium XI within Firmicutes was the second largest, representing 27.4% of all 420 sequences. A total of 82 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that are putative species were identified from the retrieved sequences. The results of this study will improve understanding of the diversity of fecal bacteria in dogs and guide future studies on the health and well-being of dogs.
