  • Wind resource assessment is necessary when designing wind farm. To get the assessment, we must use a long term(20 years) observed wind data but it is so hard. so that we usually measured more than a year on the planned site. From the wind data, we can calculate wind energy related with the wind farm site. However, it calculate wind energy to collect the long term data from Met-mast(Meteorology Mast) station on the site since the Met-mast is unstable from strong wind such as Typhoon or storm surge which is Non-periodic. To solve the lack of the long term data of the site, we usually derive new data from the long term observed data of AWS(Automatic Weather Station) around the wind farm area using mathematical interpolation method. The interpolation method is called MCP(Measure-Correlative-Predict). In this study, based on the MCP Regression Model proposed by us, we estimated the wind energy at Handong site using AEP(Annual Energy Production) from Gujwa AWS data in Jeju. The calculated wind energy at Handong was shown a good agreement between the predicted and the measured results based on the linear regression MCP. Short term AEP was about 7,475MW/year. Long term AEP was about 7,205MW/year. it showed an 3.6% of annual prediction different. It represents difference of 271MW in annual energy production. In comparison with 20years, it shows difference of 5,420MW, and this is about 9 months of energy production. From the results, we found that the proposed linear regression MCP method was very reasonable to estimate the wind resource of wind farm.

  • The final site of offshore wind power plant should be decided by comprehensive examination of various conditions such as wind resource, sea depth, geology, grid connection, social circumstance and environmental issue. Wind condition is typically regarded as the most important factor because wind energy increases in proportion to wind velocity and it directly relates to the amount of power output, efficiency of power plant and profitability. Advanced countries in the offshore wind power sector such as Denmark, UK and Germany, they are analyzing wind resource accurately by installing the meteorological mast in the ocean in order to get the optimal type of wind turbine and maximum generation efficiency. Also, it is made much of designing offshore power plant on the basis of actual measurement by met-mast and those wind farms have a chance to get the loan with reduced interest rate in project financing. In Korea, the HEMOSU-1 is installed in the ocean around Wido island to analyze wind resource of test bed of 100MW offshore wind power on october last year. This paper deals with the design and construction procedure of the first met-mast in Korea and also shows the site characteristics of test bed. Therefore, this paper will give useful information to local governments and private business sector who are trying to construct offshore wind farm and it can also be a good reference for the following projects of meteorological mast in near future.

  • In order to research the way to evaluate wind resource without actual Met Mast data, this paper has been carried out on the southeastern region of Jeju island, Korea. Although wind turbine has been an economical alternative energy resource, misjudging the prediction of lifetime or payback period occurs because of the inaccurate assessment of wind resource and the location of wind turbine. Using WindPRO(Ver. 2.7), a software for wind farm design developed by EMD from Denmark, wind resources for the southeastern region of Jeju island was analyzed, and the performance of WindPRO prediction was evaluated in detail. Met Mast data in Su-san 5.5Km far from Samdal wind farm, AWS in Sung-san 4.5km far from Samdal wind farm, and Korea Wind Map data had been collected for this work.

  • In order to support the development of wind farms in Jejudo, a wind resource database for Jejudo has been established using a meteor-statistical analysis of KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) met-mast measurements and KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) weather data. The analysis included wind statistics, tower shading, an exposure category classification using satellite images, the effect of atmospheric stability on the wind profile exponent, and a correlation matrix of wind speed to gain an understanding of the meteorological correlation between long-term weather observation stations and short-term met-mast measurements. The wind resource database for Jejudo, is to be provided as an add-on to Google $Earth^{TM}$, which is expected to be utilized as a guideline for the selection of an appropriate reference site for long-term correction in the next wind farm development project.

  • Climatic characteristics were described using the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and the met-mast on Dongbok·Bukchon region. The influences of meteorological conditions on the power performance of wind turbines were presented using the data of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and met-mast of the Dongbok·Bukchon Wind Farm (DBWF) located in Jeju Island. The stability was categorized into three parameters (Richardson number, Turbulence intensity, and Wind shear exponent). DBWF was dominant in unstable atmospheric conditions. At wind speeds of 14 m/s or more, the proportion of slightly unstable conditions accounted for more than 50%. A clear difference in the power output of the wind turbine was exhibited in the category of atmospheric stability and turbulence intensity (TI). Particularly, a more sensitive difference in power performance was showed in the rated wind speeds of the wind turbine and wind regime with high TI. When the flow had a high turbulence at low wind speeds and a low turbulence at rated wind speeds, a higher wind energy potential was produced than that in other conditions. Finally, the high-efficiency of the wind farm was confirmed in the slightly unstable atmospheric stability. However, when the unstable state become stronger, the wind farm efficiency was lower than that in the stable state.

  • As the wind farms in large scale demand enormous amount of construction cost, minimizing the economic burden is essential and also it is very important to measure the wind resources and forecast annual energy production correctly to judge the economic feasibility of the proposed site by way of installing a Met mast at or nearby the site. Wind resources were measured by installing a 80[m] high Met mast at WangdeungYeo Island to conduct the research incorporated in this paper and offshore wind farm was designed using WindPRO. Wind farm of 100[MW] was designed making use of 3 and 4.5[MW] wind generator at the place selected to compare their annual energy production and capacity factor applying the loss factor of 10[%] and 20[%] respectively to each farm. As a result, 336,599[MWh] was generated by applying 3[MW] wind generator while 358,565 [MWh] was produced by 4.5[MW] wind generator. Difference in the energy production by 3[MW] generator was 33,660 [MWh] according to the loss factor with the difference in its capacity factor by 3.8[%]. On the other hand, 23 units of 4.5 [MW] wind generators showed the difference of annual energy production by 35,857 [MWh] with 4.0[%] capacity factor difference.

  • A web-based program was developed for analyzing weather and structure data from the HeMOSU-1 offshore meteorological mast installed by the KEPCO Research Institute, and 35 km west-southwestward away from Gyeokpo located in Jeonbuk province. All of the measured data are obtained through the data transmitter and the server systems equipped on the HeMOSU-1 and the aerodynamic laboratory in Chonbuk National University respectively. The dualised server system consists of two servers, one is for logging the 1 second based raw data with 10 minute averaged values, and the other is for managing web page with processed weather data. Daily or weekly 10-min averaged data can be provided based on the input date by users. Processed weather data such as wind rose, Weibull distribution, diurnal distribution, turbulence intensity according to wind speed, wind energy density, and so forth are visualized through the web page which would be both useful and informative for developing the wind farm or designing a wind blade for the wind farm nearby southwest sea around the Korean Peninsula. • Sensitivity analysis of wind resource micrositing has been performed through the application case at the Antarctic King Sejong station with the most representative micrositing softwares: WAsP, WindSim and Meteodyn WT. The wind data obtained from two met-masts separated 625m were applied as a climatology input condition of micro-scale wind mapping. A tower shading effect on the met-mast installed 20m apart from the warehouse has been assessed by the CFD software Fluent and confirmed a negligible influence on wind speed measurement. Theoretically, micro-scale wind maps generated by the two met-data located within the same wind system and strongly correlated meteor-statistically should be identical if nothing influenced on wind prediction but orography. They, however, show discrepancies due to nonlinear effects induced by surrounding complex terrain. From the comparison of sensitivity analysis, Meteodyn WT employing 1-equation turbulence model showed 68% higher RMSE error of wind speed prediction than that of WindSim using the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model, while a linear-theoretical model WAsP showed 21% higher error. Consequently, the CFD model WindSim would predict wind field over complex terrain more reliable and less sensitive to climatology input data than other micrositing models. The auto-validation method proposed in this paper and the evaluation result of the micrositing softwares would be anticipated a good reference of wind resource assessments in complex terrain.

  • This paper reviews three commercial softwares for wind climate data analysis in wind resource assessment; WAsP/Observed Wind Climate, WindRose and Windographer. Windographer is evaluated as the best software because of its variety of input data format, analysis functions, easiness of user interface, etc. For a quantitative understanding of uncertainty depending on software selection, a benchmark is carried out with the met-mast observation dataset at the Gimnyeong Wind Turbine Performance Test Site. It is found that Weibull parameter calculation and air density correction have a dependency on the software so that such uncertainty should be considered when an analysis software is selected. It is confirmed that annual energy production calculated by WAsP using a statistical table of frequency of occurrence may have some error compared to a time-series calculation method used by the other softwares.
