  • Environment-dependent fatigue life of Cu-Cd alloy wires used as messenger wires was investigated. Tensile test results showed the decrease of tensile strength and elongation of messenger wires by 3.7% and 16.8%, respectively, in used specimens when compared to new ones. Messenger wires used at industrial region for 26 yeras showed 35∼50% decrease in fatigue life, which is partly due to the in stress concentrations by formation of corrosion products at the surface. Single wires showed better fatigue properties than stranded wires, especially at low cycle regions with higher stresses. Stranded wires showed shorter fatigue lives than single wires because of friction between wires by surface contact. Service life of messenger wires was dependent upon the environments which they were exposed to. SO$_2$ and humidity deteriorated the fatigue properties by environmental degradation.

  • Fatigue life of catenary wires in various environments is reduced when stress is concentrated on some points, which are often found in corroded areas by surrounding pollutants. Therefore, the fatigue test were performed in order to investigate the effect of the surface corrosion on the destructive behavior in service environment and accelerated corrosion environment as well as th examine the corrosive property and mechanism of the catenary wires. In the fatigue test of the messenger stranded wire, the corrosion degraded materials showed 35~50% of fatigue life at a same stress amplitude compared to original material. Because the catenary wires have variable load by the interaction of periodic contacts with pantographs the maximum stresses of trolley wire and messenger wire calculated by simulation at the messenger wire during operation was estimated thought the corrosion behavior interpretation of variable stress and fatigue test.

  • The Korean distribution line currently consists of overhead ground wires (OHGW), overhead distribution lines, neutral wires (NW), and messenger wires (MW). The MW is installed under the NW. The lightning protection system in Korea is focused on OHGW and lightning arrester and the MW are not considered. Therefore, this paper proposes the applicability of MW for purpose of lightning protection. For this, we analyzed the effects of lightning overvoltage according to the existence of OHGW and MW and the grounding conditions of the MW in the Korean distribution system. The grounding conditions of the MW that we took into consideration were the common or separate grounding of the MW and NW. The analysis based on the equivalent circuit of the distribution pole at each condition was performed. The distribution lines and lightning were modeled using the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). For each of the installation conditions of the OHGW and MW, the various lightning conditions were simulated and analyzed for both direct and indirect lightning. The simulation results showed that, if the OHGW was not installed in the Korean distribution system, the lightning overvoltage could be reduced by the common grounding of the MW and NW.

  • As the telecommunication lines bring into widespread use, one of the most important aspects related to power distribution systems is effectively to evaluate the effect on the telecommunication lines from power lines. One of the efficient methods to evaluate the effect is to measure the induced voltage of a telecommunication line as a result of a ground-loop. If the power lines cause high induced voltage, the ground reference in the telecommunication lines is no longer a stable potential, so signals may ride on the noise. A ground loop is common wiring conditions where a ground current may take more than one path to return to the grounding electrode at the arrangement between the power lines and telecommunication lines. When a multi-path connection between the power lines and telecommunication line circuits exists, the resulting arrangement is known as a ground loop. Whenever a ground loop exists, there are potential for damages or abnormal operations of the telecommunication lines. The power lines can induce the voltage on the communication line. The effects can be calculated by considering the inductances and capacitances. However, if we assume that there are only power lines, it doesn't have a practical meaning because there are conductors with other purpose in the neighborhood of the lines. If we consider that case, we need more complex system. Therefore we suggest more complex system considering the conductors with other purpose in the neighborhood of the lines. The neutral wires and the overhead ground wires are considered for calculating the induced voltage. We assume that there are the messenger wires beside the power line as a result of increased use of them. The main purpose of this paper is a study on a shielding effect of messenger wires in the distribution lines. EMTP(Electro-Magnetic Transients Program) program is used for the induced voltage calculation.

  • Contact wires are made by metallic materials and exposured at atmosphere. We have investigated mechanical properties and the present condition of air pollution as to the messenger wires and ACSR wires of these contact wires. Mechanical properties between new contact wires and used, the used one's tensile strength and elongations was decreased by effect from corrosion. We observed a fatigue properties which was investigated by fatigue test because contact wires were affected with amplitude vibration everytime the train passed through the railways. In the evaluation of fatigue test, it was also shown that fatigue life of the used wires was decreased 50 ∼ 60% compared with that of new ones in average by effect from corrosion.

  • As most railways are gradually electrified with modernized electric cars, the demand for catenary wires and their facilities are also increased. Catenary Wires are exposed to the marine area with air-borne salt or severely polluted industrial area with much corrosive emission gases depending on the locations. Corrosion of catenaty wires can make their actual lifetime shorter than that originally designed. Thus, the messenger and ACSR wires, kinds of catenary wire system, were investigated with respect to corrosion, which include new and used ones collected at the field. Tensile strengths and elongations appeared to decrease when the wires were exposed to corrosive environments. The amount of decrease was more prominent as environmental conditions became more corrosive. They are also vibrated with some amplitude everytime pentographs touch contact line. The frequent cyclic load on the wire may result in a fatigue damage. Surface damage by corrosion can make fatigue crack initiate with ease. In the present study, the fatigue life of the used wire was measured 50 to 60% compared with that of new one in average.

  • Dynamic characteristics of a catenary that supplies electrical power to high-speed railway is investigated. The catenary is a slender structure composed of repeating spans. Each span is in turn composed of the contact and messenger wires connected by the hangers in regular intervals. A finite element based dynamic model is developed, and numerical simulations are performed to determine the dynamic characteristics of the catenary The influence of the structural parameters on the response characteristics is investigated. The structural parameters considered include tension on the contact and messenger wires, stiffness of the hangers, and the hanger and span spacing. The hanger characteristics are found to be the dominant factors that influence the overall dynamic characteristics of the catenary.

  • In this paper, catenary wires were analyzed aging through the experiment about a new product and a test sample in accordance with temperature changes from long-term use. In case of the contact wire, the maximum load was reduced within 7% and the tensile strength showed a reduced within 6.7% compared with a new reference standard $110mm^2$. 19 Strands of messenger wire have a little more than a standard value, but result data on tensile test were less than the reference value about stranded wire. Also parts among 49 strands of dropper was found to be smaller than the reference value and it appeared greatly increasing intensity as toward the center of the strand.

  • Dynamic characteristics of pantograph-catenary system that supplies electrical power to high-speed trains are investigated. A simple catenary is composed of the contact and messenger wires connected by hamgers possessing bi-directional stiffness properties. The influences of parameters that determine the contact properties of pantograph-catenary system are investigated through numerical simulations. For the catenary, a finite difference model composed of 10 spans is constructed. The contact and messenger wires are modeled as strings with respective tension and damping ratio values. The pantograph is modeled as a linear 3-degree-of-freedom system. It is found that the tension, number of hangers and damping ratios as well as the speed of the train significantly influence the contact forces and contact separation rate

  • Due to increasing demands for environment-friendly railway system, bronze wires with cadmium, which is a potential environmental hazard, have been no longer permitted as messenger wire for electric railway system. One of materials being considered as the replacements is copper-clad steel conductor(CCSC), which is currently used as contact wire for high speed operation in the Japanese shinkansen. However, there have been few studies for the application as messenger wire by the CCSC. This study deals with requirements and performances of the messenger wire stranded by the CCSC, especially for high speed electric railway. And the tentative evaluation items and methods to be specified as the Korean railway standard(KRS) are proposed.
