Recently, due to high oil prices and environmental pollution issues, interest of alternative energy development increases and the related research is widely conducted. Among those research activities the tidal stream power generation utilizes the tidal flow as its mechanical power resource and less depends on the environmental condition for installation and operation than other renewable energy resources. Therefore the amount of power generated is quite consistent and straightforward to predict. However, research on the tidal stream energy conversion turbine is rarely found. In the present study, two numerical methods were developed and compared for the open water Momentum Theory, which is widely used for wind turbines, was adopted. The moving reference frame method for Computational Fluid Dynamis solver were also used. Hybrid meshing was used for the complex geometry of turbines. The analysis results using each method were compared to figure out a better method for the performance prediction.

A boundary-based design sensitivity analysis(DSA) technique is proposed for addressing shape optimization issues in the elastostatics problems. Sensitivity formula is derived based on the continuum formulation in a boundary integral form, which consists of the boundary solutions and shape variation vectors. Though the boundary element method(BEM) has been mainly used to obtain the boundary solution, the FEM is used in this paper because this is much more popular, and has greatly improved meshing and computing power recently. The advantage of the boundary DSA is that the shape variation vectors, which are also known as design velocity fields, are needed only on the boundary. Then, the step for determining the design velocity field over the whole domain, which was necessary in the domain-based DSA, is eliminated, making the process easy to implement and efficient. Problem of fillet design is chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Accuracy of the sensitivity is good with this method even by employing the free mesh for the FE analysis.
This describes a study on the support location optimizations of the beams using the genetic algorithm and the sensitivity analysis. The genetic algorithm is a probabilistic method searching the optimum at several points simultaneously and requiring only the values of the object and constraint functions. It has therefore more chances to find the global solution and can be applied to the various problems. Nevertheless, it has such a shortcoming that it takes too many calculations, because it is ineffective in local search. While the traditional method using sensitivity analysis is of great advantage in searching the near optimum. thus the combination of the two techniques will make use of the individual advantages, that is, the superiority in global searching form the genetic algorithm and that in local searching form the sensitivity analysis. In this thesis, for the practical applications, the analysis is conducted by FEB ; and as the shapes of structures are taken as the design variation, it requires re-meshing for every analysis. So if it is not properly controlled, the result of the analysis is affected and the optimized solution amy not be the real one. the method is efficiently applied to the problems which the traditional methods are not working properly.
In this paper, a density based topology optimization is proposed for generating of supports required in additive manufacturing to maintain the overhanging regions of main structures during layer by layer fabrication process. For this purpose, isogeometric analysis method is employed to model geometry and structural analysis of main and support structures. In order to model the problem two cases are investigated. In the first case, design domain of supports can easily be separated from the main structure by using distinct isogeometric patches. The second case happens when the main structure itself is optimized by using topology optimization and the supports should be designed in the voids of optimum layout. In this case, in order to avoid boundary identification and re-meshing process for separating design domain of supports from main structure, a parameterization technique is proposed to identify the design domain of supports. To achieve this, two density functions are defined over the entire domain to describe the main structure and supporting areas. On the other hand, since supports are under gravity loads while main structure and its stiffness is not completed during manufacturing process, in the proposed method, stiffness of the main structure is considered to be trivial and the gravity loads are also naturally applied to design support structures. By doing so, the results show reasonable supports are created to protect, continuously, overhanging surfaces of the main structure. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method and compare the results with literature.

In this paper, numerical calculations are performed to analyze the unsteady flow of NACA airfoil sections. In order to ease the flow computation for the fluid region changing in time, improve the quality of solution and simplify the grid generation for the oscillating foil flow, the computational method adopts a moving and deforming mesh with the multi-block grid topology. The multi-block, structured-unstructured hybrid grid is generated using the commercial meshing software Gridgen V15. The MDM (Moving & Deforming Mesh) and the UDF (User Define function) function of FLUENT 6 are adopted for computing turbulent flows of the foil in pitching motion. Computed unsteady lift and drag forces are compared with experimental data. in general, the characteristics of unsteady lift and drag of the experiments are reproduced well in the numerical analysis.
Magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) is a new medical imaging modality providing cross-sectional images of a conductivity distribution inside an electrically conducting object. MREIT has rapidly progressed in its theory, algorithm and experimental technique and now reached the stage of in vivo animal and human experiments. Conductivity image reconstructions in MREIT require various steps of carefully implemented numerical computations. To facilitate MREIT research, there is a pressing need for an MREIT software package with an efficient user interface. In this paper, we present an example of such a software, called CoReHA which stands for conductivity reconstructor using harmonic algorithms. It offers various computational tools including preprocessing of MREIT data, identification of boundary geometry, electrode modeling, meshing and implementation of the finite element method. Conductivity image reconstruction methods based on the harmonic $B_z$ algorithm are used to produce cross-sectional conductivity images. After summarizing basics of MREIT theory and experimental method, we describe technical details of each data processing task for conductivity image reconstructions. We pay attention to pitfalls and cautions in their numerical implementations. The presented software will be useful to researchers in the field of MREIT for simulation as well as experimental studies.

The modern development in design of airships and aerostats has led to unconventional configurations quite different from the classical ellipsoidal and spherical ones. This new class of air-vehicles presents a mass-to-volume ratio that can be considered very similar to the density of the fluid displaced by the vehicle itself, and as a consequence, modeling and simulation should consider the added masses in the equations of motion. The concept of added masses deals with the inertia added to a system, since an accelerating or decelerating body moving into a fluid displaces a volume of the neighboring fluid. The aim of this paper is to provide designers with the added masses matrix for more than twenty Lighter Than Air vehicles with unconventional shapes. Starting from a CAD model of a given shape, by applying a panel-like method, its external surface is properly meshed, using triangular elements. The methodology has been validated by comparing results obtained with data available in literature for a known benchmark shape, and the inaccuracies of predictions agree with the typical precision required in conceptual design. For each configuration, a CAD model and a related added masses matrix are provided, with the purpose of assisting the practitioner in the design and flight simulation of modern airships and scientific balloons.
Reinforced concrete floors constructed between movement restraints often crack seriously due to shrinkage after completion. One common mitigation measure is to construct the concrete floors in stages to allow part of the shrinkage movement to take place before completion. However, shrinkage movement analysis of concrete floors constructed in stages is quite cumbersome, as the structural configuration changes during construction, thus necessitating reanalysis of the partially completed structure at each stage. Herein, a finite element method for shrinkage movement analysis of concrete floors constructed in stages is developed. It analyses the whole structure, including the completed and uncompleted portions, at all stages. The same mesh is used all the time and therefore re-meshing and location matching are no longer necessary. This is achieved by giving negligibly small stiffness to the uncompleted portions, which in reality do not exist yet. In the analysis, the locked-in strains due to increase in elastic modulus as the concrete hardens and the creep of the hardened concrete are taken into account. Most important of all, this method would enable fully automatic shrinkage movement analysis for the purpose of construction control.

One of the efficient and useful tools to achieve the optimal design of structures is employing the sensitivity analysis in the finite element model. In the numerical optimization process, often the semi-analytical method is used for estimation of derivatives of the objective function with respect to design variables. Numerical methods for calculation of sensitivities are susceptible to the step size in design parameters perturbation and this is one of the great disadvantages of these methods. This article uses complex variables method to calculate the sensitivity analysis and combine it with discrete sensitivity analysis. Finally, it provides a new method to obtain the sensitivity analysis for linear structures. The use of complex variables method for sensitivity analysis has several advantages compared to other numerical methods. Implementing the finite element to calculate first derivatives of sensitivity using this method has no complexity and only requires the change in finite element meshing in the imaginary axis. This means that the real value of coordinates does not change. Second, this method has the lower dependency on the step size. In this research, the process of sensitivity analysis calculation using a finite element model based on complex variables is explained for linear problems, and some examples that have known analytical solution are solved. Results obtained by using the presented method in comparison with exact solution and also finite difference method indicate the excellent efficiency of the proposed method, and it can predict the sustainable and accurate results with the several different step sizes, despite low dependence on step size.

Transmission error (TE) is the most important cause of gear noise and vibration because TEs affect the changes of the force and the speed of gears. TE is usually expressed as an angular deviation, or a linear deviation measured at the pitch point and calculated at successive positions of the pinion as it goes through the meshing cycle. Accurate measurement of TE for gear transmission will provide a reasonable basis for gear design, manufacturing processes and quality control. Therefore, in order to study the accuracy of the gear transmission, stability, TE, vibration and noise after gear micro-geometry modification, a gear transmission test rig is proposed in this paper, which is based on the existing technical conditions, by using reasonable testing methods, hardware and a signal processing method. All of the details and the experience can be taken into consideration in the next upgraded test rig.
