  • Due to the nature that high datarate leads to shorter transmission range, the performance enhancement by high datarate 802.11 WLANs may be degraded when applying high datarate to an 802.11 based multihop ad hoc network. In this paper, we evaluate, through extensive simulations, the performance of multihop ad hoc networks at multiple transmission datarates, in terms of the number of hops between source and destination, throughput, end-to-end delay and packet loss. The study is conducted based on both stationary chain topology and mesh topologies with or without node mobility. From numerical results on network performance based on chain topology, we conclude that there is almost no benefit by applying the highest datarate when the chain length is 6 hops or more. With node mobility in mesh topology, the benefit of using high datarate diminishes at even shorter number of hops. To explore the main reasons for this behavior, analyses on multihop end-to-end throughput and network k-connectivity have been conducted later in the paper, and correspondingly an auto-rate adaptation algorithm has been proposed.

  • In this paper, we present efficient reconfigurable mesh algorithms for transforming between a binary image and its corresponding boundary code. These algorithms use $n\timesn\timesn$ processors when the size of the binary image is $n\timesn$. Recent published results show that these transformations can be done in O(1) time using $O(n^4)$ processors. The number of processors used by these algorithms is very large compared to the number of pixels in the image. Here, we present fast transformation algorithms which use $n^3 processors only. the transformation from a houndary code to a binary image takes O(1) time, and the converse transformation takes O(log n) time.

  • Engineering ceramics have many unique characteristics both in mechanical and physical properties such as high temperature hardness, high thermal, chemical and electrical resistance. However, its machinability is very poor in conventional machining due to its high hardness and severe tool wear. In the current experimental study, alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ was ultrasonically machined using SiC abrasives under various machining conditions to investigate the material removal rate and surface quality of the machined samples. Under the applied amplitude of 0.02mm, 27kHz frequency, three slurry ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 1:5 with different tool shapes and applied static pressure levels, the machining was conducted. Using the mesh number of 240 abrasive, slurry ratio of 1:1 and static pressure of $2.5kg/cm^2$, maximum material removal rate of $18.97mm^3/min$ was achieved. With mesh number of 600 SiC abrasives and static pressure of $3.0kg/cm^2$, best surface roughness of $0.76{\mu}m$ Ra was obtained.

  • In this study, the numerical analysis for laminar and turbulent flows around a circular cylinder is carried out from Reynolds number $10^4\;to\;10^6$, where the dramatic change of drag coefficients exists around Reynolds number $4{\times}10^5$. The numerical results are compared with those of the experiments and they show reasonable agreements. The good results can be obtained without turbulent model by minimizing mesh size in the body normal direction and increasing mesh numbers in the body tangential direction. The future study for 2-dimensional flat plates with no pressure gradients and 3-dimensional bodies must be made to verify whether the same conclusions can be drawn.

  • This study focuses on the analysis of slewing ball bearings in wind turbines. Slewing bearings have an outer diameter of several meters, and hundreds of balls are in contact with the raceway. Due to the large number of balls and raceway contact conditions, it is difficult to accurately analyze contact stresses using general analysis techniques. To analyze the contact stress of a slewing ball bearing, the sub-modeling method is applied, which is a technique that first analyzes the displacement of the entire model and then analyzes the local stress at the point of maximum displacement. In order to reduce the displacement analysis time of the entire ball bearing, the technique of replacing the ball with a nonlinear spring is adopted. The analytical agreement of the simplified model was evaluated by comparing it with a solid mesh model of the ball for three models with different spring attachment methods. It was found that for the condition where a large turnover moment is applied to the bearing, increasing the number of spring elements gives the closest results to modeling the ball with a solid mesh.

  • An automated dynamic structural analysis module stands as a crucial element within a structural integrated mitigation system. This module must deliver prompt real-time responses to enable timely actions, such as evacuation or warnings, in response to the severity posed by the structural system. The finite element method, a widely adopted approximate structural analysis approach globally, owes its popularity in part to its user-friendly nature. However, the computational efficiency and accuracy of results depend on the user-provided finite element mesh, with the number of elements and their quality playing pivotal roles. This paper introduces a computationally efficient adaptive mesh generation scheme that optimally combines the h-method of node movement and the r-method of element division for mesh refinement. Adaptive mesh generation schemes automatically create finite element meshes, and in this case, representative strain values for a given mesh are employed for error estimates. When applied to dynamic problems analyzed in the time domain, meshes need to be modified at each time step, considering a few hundred or thousand steps. The algorithm's specifics are demonstrated through a standard cantilever beam example subjected to a concentrated load at the free end. Additionally, a portal frame example showcases the generation of various robust meshes. These examples illustrate the adaptive algorithm's capability to produce robust meshes, ensuring reasonable accuracy and efficient computing time. Moreover, the study highlights the potential for the scheme's effective application in complex structural dynamic problems, such as those subjected to seismic or erratic wind loads. It also emphasizes its suitability for general nonlinear analysis problems, establishing the versatility and reliability of the proposed adaptive mesh generation scheme.

  • The present study introduces a new cortical patch-based source model for EEG/MEG cortical source imaging to consider anatomical constraints more precisely. Conventional source models for EEG/MEG cortical source imaging have used coarse cortical surface mesh or sampled small number of vertices from fine surface mesh, and thus they failed to utilize full anatomical information which nowadays we can get with sub-millimeter modeling accuracy. Conventional ones placed a single dipolar source on each cortical patch and estimated its intensity by means of various inverse algorithms; whereas the suggested cortical patch-based model integrates whole cortical area to construct lead field matrix and estimates current density that is assumed to be constant in each cortical patch. We applied the proposed and conventional models to realistic EEG data and compared the results quantitatively. The quantitative comparisons showed that the proposed model can provide more precise spatial descriptions of neuronal source distribution.

  • We present a new computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation code. The code employs the moving and polyhedral unstructured mesh scheme, which is known as a superior approach to the conventional SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) and AMR (adaptive mesh refinement) schemes. The code first generates unstructured meshes by the Voronoi tessellation at every time step, and then solves the Riemann problem for surfaces of every Voronoi cell to update the hydrodynamic states as well as to move former generated meshes. For the second-order accuracy, the MUSCL-Hancock scheme is implemented. To increase efficiency for generating Voronoi tessellation we also develop the incremental expanding method, by which the CPU time is turned out to be just proportional to the number of particles, i.e., O(N). We will discuss the applications of our code in the context of cosmological simulations as well as numerical experiments for galaxy formation.

  • In the past, a number of approaches, such as analytical, numerical or experimental methods, have been developed to deal with the soil-structure interaction effects. However, for many problems with complex geometry and material discontinuity most of approaches are nearly unpractical since it is difficult to model structures and complicated soil profiles precisely. This paper presents a soil-structure interaction analysis approach, which carl consider precisely characteristics of structures and complicated soil profiles. The presented approach overcomes the difficulties by adopting an unaligned mesh generation approach. From numerical examples, the applicability of the proposed approach is validated and dynamic responses of soil-structure systems subjected to earthquake loading are investigated considering characteristics of structures and complicated soil profiles.
