We proposed a new Mercury-free flat fluorescent lamp (MFFL) for LCD backlight which has the scanning ability to reduce the blurring edges of moving images. We expanded the single cell MFFL with 2.2 inch diagonal size into the multi-cell MFFL for the 32-inch LCD-TV backlight application, and examined its response characteristics and proposed a driving scheme for scanning.

We proposed a new Mercury-free Flat Fluorescent Lamp (MFFL) for LCD backlight which shows a wide, stable operating voltage margin, high luminance and efficiency. In this paper, we expanded the single cell with 4 inch diagonal size into the multi-cell for the large size LCD-TV backlight application, examined its operating characteristics and proposed a driving scheme for 2-bit areal selective dimming control.

A Highly efficient Mercury-free Flat Fluorescent Lamp (MFFL) with dielectric barrier Xe gas discharge was developed for an alternative of conventional line-type Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs) which shows a wide voltage margin and a stable discharge operation for diffuse glow discharge with an application of a auxiliary electrode. Electro-optic characteristics of the MFFL were examined through the changes in ambient temperature, total pressure and Xe partial pressure. the single cell is expanded into a multi-structured configuration to realize a large sized lamp by a simple repetition of the single cells, and a new driving scheme is proposed for an adaptive brightness control using dual auxiliary electrodes and bi-polar drive scheme. In addition, interesting application of this ultra high luminance flat lamp by the optimization of the gas condition and the pattern of the rear phosphor layer is suggested as a good alternative of daylight lamp source

In order to realize the high luminance and luminous efficacy MFFLs for LCD backlights, we optimized the phosphor profile to enlarge the surface area. The MFFL with the new phosphor profile shows a very wide luminance range from 2,600 to 17,000 nit with the corresponding luminous efficacy from 66 to 32.5 lm/W. The results were obtained with the color coordinate of the phosphor to be around (0.25, 0.23). And the single cell is expanded into a multi-structured configuration to realize a 32 inch-sized lamp by a simple repetition of the single cells, and a new driving scheme is proposed for an adaptive local dimming and scanning drive using dual auxiliary electrodes and bipolar drive scheme. Especially the ultra high luminance and luminous efficacy results suggest the duty time of illumination of the backlight unit can be significantly reduced.
