  • The high school students' problem solving patterns and their features in scientific inquiry, especially on controlling variables and stating hypothesis have been investigated. The 8 problems on controlling variables and stating hypothesis were selected out of the scientific inquiry area in the experimental tryout of Aptitude Assessment for College Education, and had been used to find the patterns and their features. The results of findings are as follows: There were seven patterns in the process of solving problems. Five of seven patterns were found in right answers and four patterns in wrong answers. Two patterns were found in both right and wrong answers. Some students could solve the problems even though they did not understand the elements of the scientific inquiry, controlling variables and stating hypothesis. The false application of physics concepts, misunderstanding about the elements of the scientific inquiry and using unrelated experience and conjectures were the features of students' wrong answers. On the other hand, the right application of physics concepts, understanding and applying the elements right, infering answers from the tables and figures on statements of suggested problems were the features of right answers. The further studies on this kind may helpful to find the higher mental abilities related to scientific inquiry and to develop tools for testing students' scientific inquiry thinking skills.

  • Anomia, word finding difficulty, is one of the most common feature in aphasia. Previous studies support that the process of picture naming consists of three stages, in the order of the object recognition, semantic, and phonological output stages. Anomic patients have many symptoms and it means that anomia can be sub-divided into several symptom groups. Our anomia assessment battery consists of several parts: (1) picture naming set, (2) picture-word matching task, (3) lexical decision task for mental lexicon damage, (4) naming task for phonological lexicon damage, and (5) semantic decision task. Pictures and words were selected on the basis of usage frequency, semantic category, and word length. We administered this anomia evaluation battery to many anomic aphasics and we subdivided patients into several groups. We hope that our anomia evaluation set is useful and helpful for evaluation anomic aphasics

  • The human face can provide a great deal of information in regard to his/her race, age, sex, personality, feeling, psychology, mental state, health condition and ect. If we pay a close attention to the aging process, we are able to find out that there are recognizable phenomena such as eyelid drooping, cheek drooping, forehead furrowing, hair falling-out, the hair becomes gray and etc. This paper proposes that the method to estimate the age by analyzing these feature components for the facial image. Ang we also introduce the method of facial image synthesis in accordance with the cange of age. The feature components according to the change of age can be obtainec by dividing the facial image into the 3-dimensional shape of a face and the texture of a face and then analyzing the principle component respectively using 3-dimensional model. We assume the age of the facial image by comparing the extracted feature component to the facial image and synthesize the resulted image by adding or subtracting the feature component to/from the facial image. As a resurt of this simulation, we have obtained the age changed ficial image of high quality.

  • This paper presents a new way achieving better welding results of gas mental arc welding (GMAW) system by using a decentralized control method. In this paper, the GMAW system is considered as two separated subsystems such as a power source of GMAW (PS-GMAW) and a wire feed unit (WFU). The mathematical modeling of PS-GMAW and WFU are presented. Based on the modeling of two subsystems, a sliding mode controller and a proportional controller is designed for controlling the PS-GMAW and the WFU, respectively. Two decentralized controllers have to be designed to control the out welding arc of the GMAW to be stable and tracking the setting value accurately during the welding process. Furthermore, the simulation and experimental results are shown to prove the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

  • This study aimed to identify the dimensions of successful aging, as perceived by elderly Koreans, and to test qualitatively the elders' optimization of selection and compensation strategies in a social activity context. The results were as follows: First, the most important part of life fulfillment and regret was family and work. Second, social activity played a role in self-actualization and physiological needs. Moreover, it contributed to the elders' physical and mental health maintenance. Third, the elderly effectively participated in social activities by optimizing their selection and compensation strategies. Fourth, the elderly realized they are growing old, but considered it as a natural process. In addition, some participants suggested retirement age should be raised, but others were against this idea. Finally, elders thought successful aging means having a sufficient and independent life in old age. Thus, the elderly required good health, economic security, and a positive attitude for aging successfully.

  • This paper aims to propose a cognitive evaluation model to be utilized in designing game devices and developing relevant software with the purpose of the prevention of dementia of the elderly among various types of serious games for the elderly intending to improve their physical, mental or social capability. Firstly, a serious game for the elderly has been developed based on the guidelines of the areas pertaining to existing hardware, software and contents. Secondly, a pre-experiment of the game targeting specialists has been conducted in order to re-establish a cognitive evaluation model for the developed result. Thirdly, the cognitive evaluation model for the serious game for the elderly that intends to improve their cognitive capacity has been materialized based on the experiment results. Given the fact that the scope of game contents, most of which used to be focused on teenagers, have been gradually expanding to cover wider range of social classes than ever before, it is expected that the results of this study could be utilized as a model that can verify the games and their contents with special purposes based on the cognitive evaluation of the users.

  • The Halliwick method was developed by Mr. James McMillan, a Canadian engineer of fluid mechanics. In 1949 he started to teach physically handicapped girls to swim at the "Halliwick school for crippled Girls" in London. The Halliwick method has four important basic units, as is shown in Fig 1. This constribution only deals with the structures or the practical part of the method. This part is also known as the 10-point programme. Before the characteristics of the 10 points are dealt with seperately, a few general remarks about these ponits have to be discussed. Of all things happening in the water, fun is the most important one. Swimming is fun! Swimming is taught in an order McMillan describes as: mental Adjustment(M.A), balance restoratiion(B.R.), inhibition(Inh.), and facilitation(Fac.). The 10 points of structure are linked to each other as well as to the learning process as is shown in Fig 3. The Halliwick method, which was devised by James McMillan, has proved to be a very successful way of establishing the basic principles as they have described in this article.

Methods : Through searching concepts and properties of Meridian Gi in several chapters of $\ulcorner$Huangdineijing(黃帝內經)$\lrcorner$, many phrases concerned with that properties could be explained and reconstructed into new motional shape of Meridian Gi. Results : The basic characters of comings and goings of Meridian Gi or genuine Gi originate from food essence, and that are like a kind of waves. The most important moments of acupuncture treatment is such time of it's short passing the acupoints, carrying out tonifying and purging methods by controlling the spirit. Conclusions : The Meridian Gi consists of anti-pathogenic Gi so called genuine Gi and pathogenic Gi. Medical doctor must correctly knows the flow of Meridian Gi to operate tonifying and purging method of acupuncture treatments in order to get the desired results. Also maintaining very sensitive state in diagnostic process, the most important key points is to control the spirit and adjust mental activities of both doctors and patients. • This article investigates the use of distal demonstrative Hitlo in Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM) from a discourse-pragmatic perspective. The analysis is based on a 5-hour corpus of spoken data, including daily conversations, radio interviews, TV drama series, and some random examples. A total of 172 tokens of Hitlos are identified in the data. They can be divided into six categories according to their functions: firstly, exophoric usage, those Hitlos which refer to an object non-linguistically which can be identified in the immediate situation; secondly, endophoric usage, those which refer to an element textually; thirdly, referent introducing function, those which can be used to introduce a new but identifiable referent into the conversation (the referent usually has topical importance); fourthly, hedging expression, those which serve as a marker of imprecision; fifthly, a condition introducing marker, those which function as an indicator of the coming of a conditional sentence; finally, pause fillers, those which help speakers to manage speech turn or indicate the mental states In addition, an interactive function which Hitlo is found to serve will be discussed. Moreover, a grammaticalizational process involving semantic bleaching which Hitlo is probably undergoing is revealed in general. Finally, a filled demonstrative principle, stating that it may be a universal phenomenon to use demonstratives as filled pause will be proposed.
