  • In this paper, we propose a new type of a planar waveguide lens, a meniscus lens instead of a plano-convex lens used widely for the optical integrated circuits such as optical numerical processors. A plano-convex lens has a spherical aberration caused by the linear boundary. In the proposed meniscus lens, this linear boundary is replaced by a circular-boundary, and the spherical aberration is removed. To test the performance of the proposed lens, a meniscus lens is designed using Fermat principle and fabricated on the Y-cut $LiNbO_3$ substrate. First a $Ti:LiNbO_3$ planar waveguide is fabricated on the $LiNbO_3$ substrate by Ti indiffusion. Then a meniscus lens is fabricated on the planar waveguide by TIPE(Ti indiffued proton-exchange) method. A plano-convex lens is also fabricated on the same substrate to compare the spot size at the focal point. The measured spot size of the meniscus lens is reduced to 59% that of the plano-convex lens. This result shows that the proposed meniscus lens is more effective for optical integrated circuits than the plano-convex lens.

  • Both ground and space telescopes are being built larger and larger. Accordingly, the secondary mirrors become larger which are convex mostly on the surface form. Testing convex mirrors becomes more difficult and delicate than testing concave mirrors in optics, because additional optical components are needed to make the reflected rays converge. Hindle type tests are frequently used for measuring the surface deforms of convex mirrors, which employs a meniscus lens to reverse the diverted rays from the mirrors. In case of testing large convex mirrors by using Hindle type tests, attention would be needed as larger meniscus lens is required. A method of modified Hindle test has been studied and the characteristics are analyzed. In this paper, current method of testing convex mirrors is presented, and a new method is discussed.

  • Purpose: This study relates to the development of the 3X scope, whose objective part is configured with a doublet + a meniscus lens. Methods: By the initial condition of the objective part having a configuration of a doublet + a singlet, we could optimize the optical system of scope in order to minimize the finite ray aberrations of the objective part and the whole optical system of scope, and so we could develope a new type 3X scope. Results: On the condition of the objective part having a configuration of a doublet + a singlet, when the optical system of scope was optimized in order to minimize the finite ray aberrations, we could find that the singlet became the meniscus type lens having the concave shape to the direction of the doublet, and the longer the distance between the doublet and the meniscus lens is, the more the finite ray aberrations are minimized. Conclusions: In this study, we could develope a new type 3X scope of which finite ray aberrations can be reduced to 1/14 than the existing scope by adopting the objective part of the 3X scope having a configuration of three lenses composed of a doublet + a singlet. We could confirm that this reduction of aberrations can be a means to increase the effective aperture than the existing scope and to shorten the length of the optical system.

  • In this paper we analyzed the optical property after we chose the lens system to cover a wide angular field which is designed to use a established designed meniscus negative outer element. The special quality of the system is to offer a wide angular field by getting only one outer negative element and to be a compacted optical system to utilize the good point of miniaturization and light-weighturization by using two aspheric surfaces. Also, we observed the aberration correction of a aspheric as we investigated two aspheric's forms to use for a aberration correction.

  • The contact angle of a meniscus and a droplet can be controlled by using electrowetting phenomena. We investigated the dynamic aspect of electrowetting for an oil-electrolyte interface formed inside a closed glass tube. A step input voltage is applied and the subsequent motion of the interface is recorded by a high-speed camera. A kind of capillary instability is observed near the three-phase contact line, which could degrade the reliability of device utilizing electrowetting such as electrowetting liquid lens. The dynamics of interface motion for different input voltages and the fluid viscosities are analyzed and discussed based on the experimental results.

  • In this paper, we tried to realize a next generation MILES detection system which is robust to optical noise using a narrow band interference optical filter. Applying a narrow band interference optical filter which has the wavelength range of 895~915nm to the LASER wavelength of 900nm, we could obtain detection characteristics robust to strong optical noise which can be occurred in street battles. However, the MILES detection system has the blind range of detection in the incident angle range of $30^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$. To solve this problem we proposed a method of incident angle scatter using refractors. Applying a concave meniscus lens refractor which has diopter of 5.4 to the MILES detection system, we could eliminate the blind angle of detection.

  • Purpose: The review article was written to establish an excel program that could calculate minimal Dk of contact lens without $O^2$ deficiency and actual $O^2$ concentration on cornea when contact lens were being fitted by changing lens-related factors. Methods: An excel program was formulated to calculate the thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer, Dk of contact lens and $O^2$ concentration on cornea. Results: With the excel program established, minimal $O^2$ concentration needed on cornea could be calculated when the thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer was changed by varying lens-related factors. A different route in the excel program was needed to choose based on the shape of lacrimal layer. The thickness of lacrimal layer was determined by the shape of meniscus made of tear between lens edge and cornea with flat fit. Thus, the $O^2$ concentration showing negative number in calculation decreased on peripheral cornea with flatter fitting and actual $O^2$ concentration would be zero on cornea. With tight fitting, the thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer is much thicker than lens itself thus negative number in calculation by the excel program is shown indicating zero oxygen on cornea. It can cause $O^2$ deficiency regardless of Dk of contact lens. Conclusions: The calculation of thickness of post-lens lacrimal layer and $O^2$ concentration on cornea by the established excel program is suggested to avoid $O^2$ deficiency when fitting state is varied by changing lens-related factors.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of stray light originating from the blue-light blocking lens on the quality of the image. After designing the ideal spectacle lens, anti-reflection spectacle lens without internal reflection, anti-reflection spectacle lens with internal reflection, and blue-light blocking lens with internal reflection, the light intensity distribution and stray light distribution were derived. The designed spectacle lenses are meniscus lenses with a refractive power of 0.00 D, refractive index of 1.56, and a radius of 155.15 mm. The peaks of reflectance of the 4 types of blue-light blocking lenses are in the range between 430 nm and 440 nm, and their reflectances are 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. According to the analysis results, as the reflectance of the blue-light blocking lens increases, the light intensity in the center of the lens decreases and the intensity of the stray light in the center-periphery and periphery of the lens increases. This trend appeared to intensify with increasing reflectance of the blue-light blocking lenses. Because the increase in the reflectance of the blue-light blocking lens degrades the quality of the image by increasing the intensity of the stray light in the center-periphery and periphery of the lens, its reflectance needs to be adjusted by varying the blue-light blocking ratio and the luminous transmittance, in order to diminish the level of visual discomfort.
