  • It is possible for humans to breathe underwater using dissolved oxygen. However, unlike fish, humans need large amounts of oxygen to breathe underwater. Water generally contains small amounts of dissolved oxygen. To get enough dissolved oxygen from water, great volumes of it should be supplied into a separation device. If exhalation gases are used, the amounts of water supplied into the membrane can be decreased. However, the characteristics of exhalation gases after passage through the separation device need to be investigated. To reuse the exhalation gases, the concentration of carbon dioxide should be decreased. A compressor is needed to supply the exhalation gases because of the high pressure generated in the membrane inlet. However, compressors require a lot of power and are heavy, so it is not proper to get the portable separation device. A system without the compressor is needed. If the pressure of the position mixed from the exhalation is less than atmosphere, the compressor is not needed. In this thesis, characteristics of the gases which are mixed with exhalation gases and separated from water after passing the membrane are investigated. The compositions of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and nitrogen are measured with the gas chromatography. The effects of water and exhalation gas flow rates on characteristics of gases separated from water after the membrane are showed.

  • The overall performance of BNR-MBR, so-called Anoxic-Anaerobic-Aerobic Membrane Bioreactor ($A^3$-MBR), developed for nutrient removal was studied to determine the efficiencies and mechanisms under different solid retention time (SRT). The reactor was fed by synthetic high-rise building wastewater with a COD:N:P ratio of 100:10:2.5. The results showed that TKN, TN and phosphorus removal by the system was higher than 95%, 93% and 80%, respectively. Nitrogen removal in the system was related to the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) reaction which removed all nitrogen forms in aerobic condition. SND reaction in the system occurred because of the large floc size formation. Phosphorus removal in the system related to the high phosphorus content in bacterial cells and the little effects of nitrate nitrogen on phosphorus release in the anaerobic condition. Therefore, high quality of treated effluent could be achieved with the $A^3$-MBR system for various water reuse purposes.

  • The surface characteristics and performance of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) hollow fiber membranes have been systematically investigated at lab- and pilot-scale to assess their application to membrane-bioreactor, particularly for integrating wastewater reclamation and rainwater harvesting. The PTFE membrane expressed some surface features, such as hydrophobicity, which might enhance membrane fouling. However, lab-scale performance and cleaning experiments under various conditions demonstrated that the PTFE membrane could produce the desirable water flux with good cleaning efficiency, implying easy operation and maintenance due to superior chemical resistance of PTFE membranes. Most of effluent water qualities were met with Korean standard for discharge and reuse, except color. Color level was further reduced by blending with rainwater at 75:25 ratio. Based on the lab-scale experimental results, the pilot plant was designed and operated. Pilot operation clearly showed sTable performance with satisfactory water quality, suggesting that PTFE membrane could be applied for decentralized MBR integrated with rainwater use.

  • This study is to evaluate the performance of draw solutions in the water reuse of sewage discharge water using fertilizer drawn forward osmosis. Feed water used in all experiments was the effluent from secondary sedimentation tank in activated sludge process. Considering osmotic pressure, solubility, and pH, $NH_4H_2PO_4$, KCl, $KNO_3$, $NH_4Cl$, $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$, $NH_4NO_3$, $NH_4HCO_3$, and $KHCO_3$ were screened from a comprehensive lists of fertilizer. Their performances were evaluated in terms of water permeate flux and reverse solute flux. KCl showed the highest average water flux followed by $NH_4Cl$, $NH_4NO_3$, $KNO_3$, $KHCO_3$, $NH_4HCO_3$, $NH_4H_2PO_4$, and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$. Using KCl as draw solution, the average water permeate flux was 13.49 LMH. There was no big difference in osmotic pressure between the effluent from secondary sedimentation tank and deionized water. $NH_4H_2PO_4$ showed the lowest reverse solute flux followed by $NH_4Cl$, $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$, $KNO_3$, $NH_4HCO_3$, and $NH_4NO_3$. Using $NH_4H_2PO_4$ as draw solution, the reverse solute flux was $4.96{\times}10^{-3}mmol/m^2{\cdot}sec$.

  • An integrated iron and steel mill uses a large amount of water and produces wastewater which contains various contaminants such as iron, manganese, etc. Especially, in some regions of Southeast Asia, the concentration of silica in iron and steel mill wastewater is higher than in other countries. Silica is known to be one of the main causes for fouling in the membrane processes for water reuse. In cases of high concentrations of silica in iron and steel mill wastewater, the ferrous silicate tends to be formed. This could lead to higher fouling tendency depositing on the membrane surface. Therefore we conducted a pilot test to investigate the effect of silica and iron on the fouling tendency of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane for treating two types of wastewater from an integrated iron and steel mill. In this case of treated wastewater from iron and steel mill, RO pilot plant was operated with the fluxes 15.9LMH and 18.8LMH for 112 days to investigate the fouling characteristics. The results found that the fluctuation of flux was much wider than the average flux and the minimum permeability was low at 78%. In the case of treated runoff from an integrated iron and steel mill, the average concentration of iron was lower than in wastewater. RO pilot test was conducted with the flux 18.8LMH for 46 days. The results found that runoff had a lower fouling tendency and pre-treatment using microfiltration (MF) could minimize the fouling problem of RO.

  • In this paper, 4 bundle modules of PVDF hollow fiber membrane from Woori Tech company (Korea) were manufactured in a treatment capacity of 10 ton/day. A membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant was installed at Sooyoung Wastewater Treatment Plant in Busan. An alternating aeration process was selected to avoid the concentration profile of suspended solid (SS) in the MBR. For stable operation, raw wastewater with mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) of about 1,000 ppm, which was in-flowed from the aeration tank of the wastewater treatment plant, was fed and filtered through the pilot plant. Subsequently the pilot plant were washed three times with washing water: once with ethanol solution, once with a solution of 5% NaOCl, and finally with washing water. After the chemical washing, the remaining water in the MBR was fed into the pilot plant. As a result, the SS removal efficiency was found to be more than 99.9%. The amount of filtrate with the aeration tank influent decreased by 16%, compared with that from the initial conditions, giving rise to 30% increase in the suction pressure. These results were used to set up continuous operation conditions. The results from the continuous operation with influent MLSS of 1,900 mg/L showed that the SS removal efficiency was about 99.99% and that the amount of filtrate and the suction pressure were $42{\sim}52L/m^2$ and 16~20 cmHg, respectively, indicating stable operation of the pilot plant. However, for the reuse of wastewater, methods need to be sought to avoid growth of algae which affects the SS removal efficiency at inlet and outlet of the permeate tank.

  • The use of membrane as an innovative technology for water treatment process has now widely been accepted and adopted to replace the conventional water treatment process in increasing fresh water production for various domestic and industrial purposes. In this study, ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with different formulation were fabricated via phase inversion method. The membranes were fabricated by varying the polymer concentration (16 wt%, 18 wt%, 20 wt%, and 21 wt%). A series of tests, such as field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), pore size and porosity, contact angle, and zeta potential were performed to characterize the membranes. The membrane performance in terms of permeation flux and rejection were evaluated using a laboratory bench-scale test unit with mine water, lake water and tube well as model feed solution. Long hour filtration study of the membranes provides the information on its fouling property. Few pore blocking mechanism models were proposed to examine the behaviour of flux reduction and to estimate the fouling parameters based on different degree of fouling. 21 wt% PVDF membrane with smaller membrane pore size showed an excellent performance for surface water treatment in which the treated water complied with NWQS class II standard.

  • The Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration were used to treat effluent of secondary municipal wastewater treatment system(Sequencing Batch Reactor). The cross-flow hollow fiber, UF 500,000(NMWC) and MF 0.65$\mu$ membrane were selected as suitable membrane. Short term and long term fouling effect were measured as a factor of flux decrease and the fouling removal effect of mixing air bubble in the penetrant was studied. The removal of anionic sulfactants before and after formation of micelle with several kinds of oil were checked. The test results show that removal of TOC was 70~80%, TN 28% and TP 16%. The decrease of flux due to fouling were 85%(UF) and 90%(MF) after running of 100hrs. The removal of anionic sulfactants were 60~70% notwithstanding micelle or not.

  • To remove total dissolved solid (TDS) from wastewater, a carbon membrane system was prepared, using carbon membranes made from conductive activated carbon and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Using 100 ppm aqueous solutions of NaCl, $Na_2SO_4,\;MgCl_2,\;MgSO_4$, the basic properties of the carbon membranes used were studied. For the treatment of the real dye wastewater supplied from Kyungin Corp., a pilot scale carbon membrane system was also prepared, which was consisted of 240 plies of carbon membranes of $20cm{\times}20cm$ (length${\times}$width). Using the real wastewater with different TDS such as 941, 2050, 2810, 3830, 4960, 6030 ppm, prepared by the dilution of the original wastewater with pure water, the performance of the pilot scale carbon membrane system was studied. The effect of the operational conditions was studied.
