  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is an attractive candidate for residential power generator due to fast start-up and stop, high efficiency, low emission, and high power density. In this study, we employ short module stack to understand the performance of the unit cell of the stack in terms of operating temperatures. To simulate the practical fuel cell stack of residential power generator, the structure and active area of the short module stack is kept the same as that of the practical fuel cell. The results shows that the electric potential of short module stack is different from the number of cells times the potential of unit cell because of cell-to-cell variation.

  • A pore concensation-based separation technique was studied experimentally using toluene and xylene in a nitrogen stream. The removal rate of toluene and xylene on a microporous ceramic membrane was enhanced by increasing the partial pressure difference across the membrane, but the selectivity was reduced with increasing flux of nitrogen. This was found both in vacuum and pressure modes of operation. The experimental results from this study suggest that the pores mear the inlet portion of the module were filled with the organic solvent while the pores near the exit section of the module were slightly opened as the solvent concentration was depleted along the module. In the case of xylene, the rate of N$_{2}$ permeation was reduced considerably relative to toluene, resulting in a much higher separation gactor. Condensibility of xylene appeared to be higher than that of toluene, the potential for pore condensation-based separation of xylene was also found to be higher than that for toluene.

  • Membrane-bioreactor process which combines anaerobic-aerobic bioreactor and membrane process, was used to remove refractory organic susbstances and dye molecule in textile wastewater effectively. Direct feeding of raw feed water to membrane process caused serious fouling on membrane. On the other hand, pretreated feed by bioreactor before the membrane process remarkably reduced the fouling and prolonged the membrane life. Removal efficiency and fouling were more dependent on the material property of the membrane rather than the membrane pore size and structure. Operation mode of hollow fiber membrane module and linear velocity in the hollow fiber influenced the ramoval efficiency and the water flux of the membrane. The combined membrane- bioreactor process was more effective in treating the textile wastewater than each single process.

  • In this study, the effects of two pre-treatment processes were observed prior to membrane filtration: pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation. To compare the effect of two above-mentioned pre-treatments, we adopted the four schemes: first one is direct membrane filtration of river surface water, second one is membrane filtration after pre-coagulation, third one is membrane filtration after pre-ozonation and fourth one is membrane filtration after pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation. There are two exceptional characteristics in applied processes. One is the usage of the MF membrane which has high ozone resisting characteristic. Therefore, ozone resides in membrane module during filtration. The other is adoption of Jet Mixed Separator (JMS) as coagulation-sedimentation process. The change in transmembrane pressure and permeate water quality were also examined. As a result, considering the filtration performance efficiency and permeate water quality, the process composed of filtration with combination of both pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation was proved most effective. The improved efficiency was due to the reduction of loading rate of fouling inducing materials to membrane module by coagulation process as well as variable reactions, such as degradation, particle destabilization and coagulation, occurred by residual ozone in membrane module. The additional effect of pre-coagulation before pre-ozonation is suppression of AOC, one of the by-products induced by ozonation. Therefore, combination of pre-coagulation and pre-ozonation is the effective process to overcome the major de-merit of ozonation i.e. by-products formation.

  • The permeation characteristics of the wastewater containing Si fine particles were examined by ultrafiltration using the polyolefin tubular membrane module. Flux with time was due to the growth of Si cake deposited on the membrane surface and the pore plugging by fine particles. The rate of flux decline in the initial stage increased with the trans-membrane pressure. The pore blocking resistance was the dominant resistance at the initial period of filtration and the cake resistance began to dominate with the initial pore blocking resistance. The larger pores compared with the fine particles, the more the membrane pores could be blocked by the fine particles. Before and after treatment, the distribution of particle size was shifted toward to the left. Then, the average size of fine particles in the permeate was 20 nm.

  • Pressure retarded osmosis(PRO) has attracted much attention as potential technology to reduce the overall energy consumption for reverse osmosis(RO) desalination. The RO/PRO hybrid process is considered as the most logical next step for future desalination. The PRO process aims to harness the osmotic energy difference of two aqueous solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane. By using the concentrated water(RO brine) discharged from existing RO plants, the PRO process can effectively exploit a greater salinity gradient to reduce the energy cost of processing concentrated water. However, in order to use RO brine as the draw solution, PRO membrane must have high water flux and enough mechanical strength to withstand the high operational pressure. This study investigates the development of a thin film composite PRO membrane and spiral wound module for high power density. Also, the influence of membrane backing layer on the overall power density was studied using the characteristic factors of PRO membranes. Finally, the performance test of an 8-inch spiral wound module was carried out under various operating conditions(i.e. hydraulic pressure, flow rate, temperature). As the flow rate and temperature increased under the same hydraulic pressure, the PRO performance increased due to the growth of water permeability coefficient and osmotic pressure. For a high performance PRO system, in order to optimize the operating conditions, it is highly recommended that the flow pressure be minimized while the flow rate is maintained at a high level.

  • To recover sericin protein from by-product in silk production process, a polyethersulfone hollow fiber ultra-filtration membrane module was used. The soap in the degummed solution was precipitated by calcium chloride. The influence of membrane module of submerged and external type on membrane fouling was investigated. The effect of soap and protein on the membrane fouling in the external type membrane module was also studied. The removal of soap resulted in decreasing the membrane fouling. It was shown that the protein and the membrane were affected by the soap.
