Space-maintaining and osteopromotive effect of freezedried bone graft in the procedure of GBR (동결건조골이 재생공간 유지 및 골재생에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of freeze-dried bone graft on space-making capacity and bone formation in the procedure of guided bone regeneration with titanium reinforced ePTFE membrane. After decortication in the calvaria, GBR procedure was performed on 8 rabbits with titanium reinforced ePTFE membrane filled with human FDBA(Rocky Mountain Tissue Bank,Aurora Co., USA). Decortication was performed to induce the effect of bone forming factor from bone marrow. The animals were sacrificed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks after the surgery. Non-decalcified specimens were processed for histologic analysis. πle results of this study were as follows: 1. Titanium reinforced-ePTFE membrane was biocompatable and capable of maintaining the space-making. 2. FDBA particle was surrounded with connective tissues but there was no evidence on new bone formation. 3. FDBA particle resorbed continuously but it remained until 12weeks after the surgery. Within the above results, TR-ePTFE membrane could be used effectively for Guided bone regeneration but It was assumed that FDBA does not appear to contribute to bone formation.

Phosphatidylcholine is Required for the Efficient Formation of Photosynthetic Membrane and B800-850 Light-Harvesting Complex in Rhodobacter sphaeroides

  • No phosphatidylcholine (PC) was detected in the membrane of Rhodobacter sphaeroides pmtA mutant (PmtAl) lacking phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) N-methyltransferase, whereas PE in the mutant was increased up to the mole % comparable to the combined level of PE and PC of wild type. Neither the fatty acid composition nor the fluidity of membrane was altered by pmtA mutation. Consistently, aerobic and photoheterotrophic growth of PmtAl were not different from wild type. However, PmtAl showed an extended lag phase (15 h) after the growth transition from aerobic to photoheterotrophic conditions, indicating the PC requirement for the efficient formation of intracytoplasmic membrane (ICM). Interestingly, the B800-850 complex of PmtAl was decreased more than twofold in comparison with wild type, whereas the level of the B875 complex comprising the fixed photosynthetic unit was not changed. Since puc expression is not affected by pmtA mutation, PC appears to be required for the proper formation of the B800-850 complex in the ICM of R. sphaeroides.

A study on wet etching for silicon membrane construction formation (실리콘 Membrane 구조 형성을 위한 Wet Etching에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we have presented processing technique about wet etching for silicon membrane construction formation. In order to make selective etching of backside silicon wafer, we used Si$_3$N$_4$ layer by PECVD(Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition). We have measured the surface thickness in backside silicon wafer after anisortropic wet etching with KOH:distilled water solutions. Through this experiment, we acquired the etching rate for 1.29${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/min. The average rough of Si-membrane frontside and backside was 0.26${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 0.90${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively.

  • 비대칭 다공막은 표피와 다공층으로 되어 있는 것으로 알려져 왔으나 (그림 1-a), 최근에 두 층 사이에 nodule층의 존재가 여러 연구자들에 의하여 알려졌다. (그림 1-b). 그런데 표피층은 겔화에 의해 그리고 다공층은 binodal에 의한 nucleation and growth 기구로 생성된다는 것이 일반화된 이론이나, nodule 층의 생성에 대한 연구는 없었다. Nodule층의 생성기구를 밝히기 위해서 고분자용액을 편의상 세개의 층으로 나누었으며 (그림 2), 알려진 생성 기구에 의하면 첫째 층은 표피 그리고 셋째는 다공층으로 된다. 그런데 둘째층은 상분리 순간의 고분자 농도에 따라 nodule층 혹은 다공층이 되며, 만일 이 순간의 고분자농도가 임계농도 보다 낮으면 nodule층 그리고 높으면 다공층이 생성된다는 새로운 비대칭 다공막의 생성기구를 제안하였다.   • The phase inversion is a significant phenomena in the preparation of membranes and wet spinning. In both these processes, a viscous dope solution is precipitated in a nonsolvent bath and a porous structure is formed under certain conditions. Such structure could have been considered as a diffusion controlled process. The membrane formation of the polymer solution includes both phase separation and gelation. We have studied the influence of variables on the final structure and tried to control the porosity and ultrafiltration(UF) performance of the polyacrylonitrile(PAN) and its copolymer.

  • The characterization of pore properties (mean pore size and pore size distribution) of the active layer in a UF membrane is important not only in order to obtain information about the factors affecting pore formation during membrane manufacturing but also to understand deeply the mechanism of solute and solvent transport through pores. Many methods of characterizing quantitatively the pore properties of UF membranes have been suggested in the literature: solvent and gas flow measurement, bubble point determination, electron microscopy, gas adsorption/desorption measurement, rejection measurement etc. But most of these methods involve time-consuming procedures and involve some wellknown problems and uncertainties.

  • Counterion-specific helix formation and ion-selective transport of alkali metal chlorides (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, CsCl) were investigated for a poly(L-glutamic acid)(PLGA)/poly (vinyl alcohol)(PVA) blend membrane immersed in aqueous ethanol. The counterion specificity for helix formation of PLG alkali metal salts in the membrane was Li>Na>K>Cs. This specificity is ascribed to a contact ion-pair formation between the PLG carboxyl anion and the bound counterion, which depends on the energy balance between the electrostatic interaction and the desolvation. In aqueous ethanol, an appreciable ion-selectivity was observed for the permeability coefficient, i.e. Li$^{+}{\cdot}$Cl$^{-}$) formation between counterion and coion, and the latter to a specific interaction of diffusing counterions with polymer charges.

Alveolar Bone Formation in Dogs using Vicryl Absorbable Mesh(Polyglactin 910) and Decalcified Freeze-Dried Bone Grafting (흡수성 차폐막과 동종탈회동결건조골 이식에 의한 치조골 재생의 병용효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate new bone formation following guided bone regeneration by resorbable and nonresorbable membrane. Six adult mongrel dogs were used. The first, second, third, fourth premolars in the mandible of each dog were extracted. Two months after tooth extraction, a buccal dehiscence defect was surgically created on each edentulous area. The experimental sites were divided into three groups according to the treatment modalities ; Group I-a: surgical treatment only ; Group I -b: allogenic decalcified freezed dried bone grafting ; Group II-a : e- PTFE membrane placement only ; Group II-b : allogenic decalcified freezed dried bone grafting and e-PTFE membrane placement ; Group III-a : Vicryl(R) mesh placement only ; Group III-b : allogenic decalcified freezed dried bone grafting and Vicryl(R) mesh placement . The animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks after operation and the specimens were prepared for histologic and histometric examination. The results were as follows : Clinically, all defect sites were healed without exposure of barrier membrane after the eight weeks. In Group I-a, dense connective tissues were impinged in the bony defect area. Well vascularized and fibrous bone marrow indicated that bone formation was still taking place was found. In Group I-b, in areas closer to the periphery, lamellation of the newly formed bone would found. In Group II-a, beneath the e-PTFE membrane a dense layer of connective tissue covering the most external portions of the regenerated tissue was seen. The new bone surfaces were lined with osteoid and osteoblast. In Group II-b, a dense layer of connective tissue covering the most external portions of the regenerated tissue was observed beneath the e-PTFE membrane. A notable amount of alveolar ridge regeneration was seen with new rigdes with well-contoured form. In Group III-a, the new bone surface were lined with osteoid and osteoblast, indicating active bone formation. A clear demarcation could not be noted between the host bone and new bone. In Group III-b, a notable amount of alveolar ridge regeneration was seen with new ridges assuming wellcontoured form. In areas closer to the periphery, lamellation of the newly formed bone would found. As histometric examination, the amount of bone formation was gained from $12.8mm^2$ to $26.3mm^2$. It was significantly greater in group II-b and group III-b compared to other groups(p<0.05) . These results suggest that Vicryl(R) mesh after DFDB grafting used in guided bone regeneration could create and sustain sufficient space for new bone formation.

Insight into influence of iron addition in membrane bioreactor on gel layer fouling

  • Membrane fouling in membrane bioreactor (MBR) remains a primary challenge for its wider application. The focus of this study to investigate the influence of iron distribution in activated sludge on gel layer fouling in MBR. Significant reduction in the transmembrane pressure (TMP) rise rates was observed in the presence of iron as result of retarding the gel layer formation time. The spatial distribution of iron had a significant impact on the stratification structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) fractions, such as proteins (PN) and polysaccharides (PS). A mitigation of PN or PS from the supernatant to the EPS inner layers was observed in the presence of iron. Compared with the control reactor, the reduction in PN and PS of the supernatant and lower PN/PS rates of the LB-EPS were beneficial to decrease the membrane fouling potential during the gel layer formation. Consequently, the iron addition managed to control gel layer fouling could be a useful strategy in MBR.
