Effects of High-temperature UNSM Treatment on Wear Resistance of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Prepared by Selective Laser Melting (Selective Laser Melting 방식으로 적층가공된 Ti-6Al-4V 합금의 내마모성 특성에 미치는 고온 UNSM 처리 영향에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, the effects of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) treatment at room and high temperatures (RT and HT of 400℃) on friction and wear behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy prepared by selective laser melting (SLM) were investigated. The objective of this study is to improve the mechanical properties and frictional behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by UNSM treatment. Dry friction and wear tests were conducted using a ball-on-disk method at RT with a bearing steel as the counter ball. Due to the high HT and UNSM treatment, the surface hardness tended to increase and surface roughness tended to reduce. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that nanocrystallization structure and compressive residual stress were formed at the surface layer after UNSM treatment at both RT and HT. After UNSM treatment, it was observed that the wear rate was reduced by about 6% for the specimen treated at RT and a 28% reduction for the specimen treated at HT in comparison with the untreated one. Based on scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that the damage caused by fatigue wear occurred in the wear track of the heat-treated specimen, and it is believed to be the cause of the highest wear rate. Mechanical properties and wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were improved and prospect of industrial application was confirmed. Further research is still required to improve the characteristics of SLM Ti-6Al-4V alloy to the level of wrought Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

  • The powder manufacturing process using the gas atomizer process is easy for mass production, has a fine powder particle size, and has excellent mechanical properties compared to the existing casting process, so it can be applied to various industries such as automobiles, electronic devices, aviation, and 3D printers. In this study, a modified A4032-xSn (x = 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%) alloy with low melting point properties is investigated. After maintaining an argon (Ar) gas atmosphere, the main crucible is tilted; containing molten metal at 1,000℃ by melting the master alloy at a high frequency, and Ar gas is sprayed at 10 bar gas pressure after the molten metal inflow to the tundish crucible, which is maintained at 800℃. The manufactured powder is measured using a particle size analyzer, and FESEM is used to observe the shape and surface of the alloy powder. DSC is performed to investigate the change in shape, according to the melting point and temperature change. The microstructure of added tin (Sn) was observed by heat treatment at 575℃ for 10 min. As the content of Sn increased, the volume fraction increased to 1.1, 3.1, 6.4, and 10.9%.

Thermoelectric Properties of Co1-xNbxSb3 Prepared by Induction Melting (유도용해법으로 제조된 Co1-xNbxSb3의 열전특성)

  • The induction melting was employed to prepare Nb-doped $CoSb_3$ skutterudites and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. Single phase $\delta-CoSb_3$ was successfully obtained by induction melting and subsequent annealing at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs in vacuum. The positive signs of Seebeck coefficients for all the specimens revealed that Nb atoms acted as p-type dopants by substituting Co atoms. Electrical conductivity decreased and then increased with increasing temperature, indicating mixed conduction behavior. Electrical conductivity increased by Nb doping, and it was saturated at high temperature. Maximum value of the thermoelectric power factor was shifted to higher temperature with increasing the amount of Nb doping, mainly originated from the high Seebeck coefficient around mixed conduction temperature and high electrical conductivity.

  • Sm-doped YBCO high $T_c$ superconductor was directionally grown by zone melt growth process in air atmosphere. Cylindrical green rods of $(Sm/Y)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_{7-x}$[(Sm/Y)1.8] oxides were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing (CIP) method using rubber mold. Based on the variation of melting temperature and growth rate, the microstructure and superconducting properties were systematically measured by using optical micrographs, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. In this study optimum melting temperature and growth rate were $1085^{\circ}C$ and 3.5 mm/hr respectively. Nonsuperconducting $(Sm/Y)_2BaCuO_5$ inclusions of (Sm/Y)1.8 superconductor were uniformly distributed within the superconducting (Sm/Y) $Ba_2Cu_3O^{7-x}$ matrix. The directionally melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 superconductor showed an onset $T_c$ $\geq$ 90K and sharp superconducting transition.

Influences of Ingredients and Melting Temperatures on the Physicochemical Properties of Process Cheese (첨가물질 및 용융온도가 가공치즈의 이화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Process cheeses were made in a laboratory with natural cheese, water, butter, and emulsifying salts varying in quantity and temperature. With the emulsifying salts, the hardness of process cheese varied from 286 to 580g, the pH values 5.1-5.9 and the solid content 56.8-63.7%. The water activity measured 0.96-0.98, the crude protein content 27.1-27.7%, the crude fat content 58.3-59.9% and the ratio of protein to fat 45.3-47.5%. The various properties of samples showed no natable difference. Increasing the water addition, the hardness and the ratio of the protein to fat decreased, while both the pH values and the water activity increased. With increasing the melting temperatures from 75 to 80, 85, 90 and $95^{\circ}C$. The other indices showed no remarkable differences among the samples.

  • Investigations of process parameters are essential when fabricating high-quality parts using additive manufacturing. This study investigates the change in the mechanical characteristics of a SUS316L specimen fabricated using selective laser melting based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio. The SUS316L powder particles were spherical and 35 ㎛ in size. Single-bead and hexahedral shape deposition experiments were performed sequentially. A single bead experiment was performed to obtain the bead overlap ratios for different laser parameters utilizing laser power and scan speed as experimental parameters. A hexahedral shape deposition experiment was also performed to observe the difference in mechanical properties, such as the internal porosity, surface roughness, and hardness, based on the energy density and bead overlap ratio of the three-dimensional printed part. Laser power, scan speed, overlap ratio, and layer thickness were chosen as parameters for the hexahedral shape deposition experiment. Accordingly, the energy density applied for three-dimensional printing, and the experimental parameters were calculated, and the energy density and bead overlap ratio for fabricating parts with good properties have been suggested.

Microbial Transglutaminase Modifies Gel Properties of Porcine Collagen

  • We studied the gel properties of porcine collagen with microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) as a catalyst. A creep meter was used to measure the mechanical properties of gel. The results showed samples with high concentration of MTGase gelled faster than those with a low concentration of MTGase. The gel strength increased with incubation time and the peaks of breaking strength for 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5% MTGase were obtained at 40, 20 and 10 min incubation time, respectively. According to SDS-PAGE, the MTGase was successfully created a collagen polymer with an increase in molecular weight, whereas no change in formation was shown without MTGase. The sample with 0.5% MTGase began to polymerize after 10 or 20 min incubation at $50^{\circ}C$, and complete polymerization occurred after 40-60 min incubation. Scanning electron microscopic analysis revealed that the gel of porcine collagen in the presence of MTGase produced an extremely well cross-linked network. The differential scanning calorimetric analysis showed the peak thermal transition of porcine collagen gel was at $36^{\circ}C$, and that with MTGase no peak was detected during heating from 20 to $120^{\circ}C$. The melting point of porcine collagen gel could be controlled by MTGase concentration, incubation temperature and protein concentration. Knowledge of the structural and physicochemical properties of porcine collagen gel catalyzed with MTGase could facilitate their use in food products.

Study on the Hydrogenation Properties of MmNi4.5Mn0.5Zrx(x=0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1) Alloys Containing the Zr by Excess (과잉의 Zr을 첨가한 MmNi4.5Mn0.5Zrx(x=0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1) 합금의 수소화특성에 관한 연구)

  • In order to improve the hydrogen storage capacity and the activation properties of the hydrogen storage alloys, the rare-earth metal alloy series, $MmNi_{ 4.5}$$Mn_{0.5}$ $Zr_{x}$ (x=0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1), are prepared by adding the excess Zr in $MmNi_{4.5}$ $Mn_{0.5}$ / alloy for the strong resistance to intrinsic degradation. The hydrogen storage alloys of rare-earth metal such as $LaNi_{5}$ , and $MmNi_{5}$X and $MmNi_{4.5}$ /$_Mn{0.5}$ alloys which substituted La by misch metal properties were characterized as well. The hydrogen storage alloys were produced by melting each metal mixture in arc melting furnace, and the as-cast alloys were heat-treated at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hr. The major elements of misch metal(Mm) were La, Ce, Pr and Nd with some impurities less than 1wt.% determined by ICP-AES. X-ray diffraction indicated that the structure for these samples was a single phase of hexagonal with $CaCu^{5}$ type. As the Zr contents increases, the activation time and the plateau pressure decrease and sloping of the plateau pressure increase. Amount of the 2nd phases increases with increase in Zr contents in $MmNi_{ 4.5}$$Mn_{0.5}$ $Zr_{0.1}$ alloy, This phenomenon indicated that $ZrNi_3$ in this phase, which shows the maximum storage capacity and the strong resistance to intrinsic degradation, is considered as a proper alloy for hydrogen storage..
