The weldability of aluminum is excel lent but weld metal is subject to include weld defects such as porosities, crack, incomplete penetration and incomplete fusion because of improper welding parameters. Especially, the porosities are main weld defects because the difference of hydrogen solubility change in melt ins and solidification state with temperature changing. Deformation of aluminum is larger than mi Id steel due to higher thermal conductivity. It is reported that porosities in deposited metal affect tensile strength and elongation. Therefore, the effect of groove angle on porosities and mechanical properties of weld metal were researched in this report where Al-5083 plate was used with 5356 filler metal that are excellent anti corrosion and strength.
The formation and stability of stationary laser weld keyholes are investigated using a numerical simulation. The effect of multiple reflections in the keyhole is estimated using the ray tracing method, and the free surface profile, flow velocity and temperature distribution are calculated numerically. In the simulation, the keyhole is formed by the displacement of the melt induced by evaporation recoil pressure, while surface tension and hydrostatic pressure oppose cavity formation. At laser powers of 500W and greater, the protrusion occurs on the keyhole wall, which results in keyhole collapse and void formation at the bottom. Initiation of the protrusion is caused mainly by collision of upward and downward flows due to the pressure components.
Submerged arc welding method from both sides is generally applied to the welding of main panel manufacturing process during ship construction. The tandem SAW method is applied to improve the productivity. The various weld defects that occur during tandem SAW method are melt through, incomplete penetration, undercut and overlap etc. It could be thought that the reasons for these defects are mainly lack of prediction ability for penetration depth and deposited metal area. In this research, total 5 kinds of welding factors for experiment like current of lead pole, voltage of lead pole, current of trail pole, voltage of trail pole and welding speed are adopted. Weld tests are carried out for the analysis of variation effects of these factors on penetration depth and deposited metal area. Based on the test and analysis results, it is possible to obtain the prediction equation for the effect of these factors on the amount of deposited metal and penetration depth. As per the verification of the results by additional tests, it is confirmed that the prediction equation, include a error margin of ${\pm}2mm$ for penetration depth and ${\pm}10mm2$ for deposited metal area.
Many processes have been introduced to join PE pipes, but most of these methods have lots of disadvantages such as costs and lack of reliability, etc. Recently due to the benefits of cost, safety and reliability, the but welding has been paid much attention to join PE pipes. In case of butt welding, the heat plate which is used to melt PE pipes is the most critical equipment. In this study, after designed secondary developed heat plate of new shape, the PE double wall pipes were but-welding by using the developed heat plate and secondary developed heat plate and comparison of weld-zones and tensile test were performed. As results of tensile test, tensile strengths using secondary developed heat plate were measured higher $1.17{\sim}1.5$ than using developed heat plate.
This paper presents a new generation of system for pressure vessel and shipbuilding. Typical pressure vessel and ship building weld joint preparations are either traditional V, butt, fillet grooves or have narrow or semi narrow gap profiles. The fillet and U groove are prevalently used in heavy industries and shipbuilding to melt and join the parts. Since the wall thickness can be up to 6" or greater, welds must be made in many layers, each layer containing several passes. However, the welding time for the conventional processes such as SAW(Submerged Arc Welding) and FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Welding) can be many hours. Although SAW and FCAW are normally a mechanized process, pressure vessel and ship structures welding up to now have usually been controlled by a full time operator. The operator has typically been responsible for positioning each individual weld run, for setting weld process parameters, for maintaining flux and wire levels, for removing slag and so on. The aim of the system is to develop a high speed welding system with multitorch for increasing the production speed on the line and to remove the need for the operator so that the system can run automatically for the complete multi-torch multi-layer weld. To achieve this, a laser vision sensor, a rotating torch and an image processing algorithm have been made. Also, the multitorch welding system can be applicable for the fine grained steel because of the high welding speed and lower heat input compare to a conventional welding process.
It is expected that advanced high strength steels (AHSS) would be widely used for vehicles with better performance in automotive industries. One of distinctive features of AHSS is the high value of carbon equivalent (Ceq), which results in the different properties in formability, weldability and paintability from those of common grade of steel sheets. There is an exponential relation between Ceq and electric resistance, which seems also to have correlation with the thickness of electric deposition (ED) coat. Higher value of Ceq of AHSS lower the thickness of ED coat of AHSS. Some elements of AHSS such as silicon, if it is concentrated on the surface, affect negatively the formation of phosphates. In this case, silicon itself doesn't affect the phosphate, but its oxide does. This phenomenon is shown dramatically in the welding area. Arc welding or laser welding melts the base material. In the process of cooling of AHSS melt, the oxides of Si and Mn are easily concentrated on the surface of boundary between welded and non‐welded area because Si and Mn could be oxidized easier than Fe. More oxide on surface results in poor phosphating and ED coating. This is more distinctive in AHSS than in mild steel. General results on paintability of AHSS would be reported, being compared to those of mild steel.
A precise bonding technique, transmission laser bonding using energy transfer, for polymer micro devices is presented. The irradiated IR laser beam passes through the transparent part and absorbed on the opaque part. The absorbed energy is converted into heat and bonding takes place. In order to optimize the bonding quality, the temperature profile on the interface must be obtained. Using optical measurements of the both plates, the absorbed energy can be calculated. At the wavelength of 1100nm $87.5\%$ of incident laser energy was used for bonding process from the calculation. A heat transfer model was applied for obtaining the transient temperature profile. It was found that with the power of 29.5 mW, the interface begins to melt and bond each other in 3 sec and it is in a good agreement with experiment results. The transmission IR laser bonding has a potential in the local precise bonding in MEMS or Lab-on-a-chip applications.

In this paper, the arc beam is considered as a moving disc heat source with a pseudo-Gaussian distribution of heat intensity. The solution for temperature distribution on welds is derived by using the image heat source method and the superposition method. It is general solution in that it can determine the temperature-rise distribution in and around the arc beam heat source, as well as the width and depth of the melt pool (MP) and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) in welding short lengths, where quasi-stationary conditions may not have been established. As a comparative study, the results of this analytical approach has been compared with that of the finite-element modeling. As a result, The theoretical analysis presented here has shown good consistency and is more time/cost-effective method compared with FEM.
Hybrid material(ceramic+metal) processes were developed for micro filter using ceramics coating at metal filter surface by thermal spray method, micro hole drilling at ceramic coated filter surface by femtosecond laser, and fiber laser direct welding of ceramic and metal (SUS304, SM45C) by capillary effect. Thermal spray process was used for ceramic powders and metal filters. The used ceramic powders were $Al_2O_3+40TiO_2$(Metco 131VF) powder of maximum particle size $5{\mu}m$ and ${Al_2O_3}99+$(Metco 54NS) power of maximum particle size 45m. Ceramic coated filters using thermal spray method had a great influence on powder material, particle size and coating thickness but had a fine performance as a micro filter. CW fiber laser was used to drill the top ceramic layer and melt the bottom metal layer for joining applications.
The effect of laser welding and surface treatment, developed as a method of repairing steam generator tubes, on the pitting corrosion resistance of alloy 690 was examined. The surfaces of some heat-treated Alloy 690 materials were melt-treated using the Nd-YAG laser beam, and then examined to characterize the microstructures. The resistance to pitting corrosion was evaluated by measuring of Ep(pitting potential) through the electrochemical tests and also by measuring the degree of pit generation through the immersion tests. The pit formation characteristics were investigated by observing microstructural changes and pit morphologies. The results show that the resistance to pitting corrosion increases in the order of the following list; solution annealed Alloy 690, thermally treated Alloy 690, and laser surface melt-treated Alloy 690. The melted region was found to have a cellular structure and fine precipitates. It was confirmed that the resistance of Alloy 690 to pit initiation and also to pit propagation was higher when it was laser treated than treated otherwise.
