  • Almost all injection molds have multi-cavity runner system for mass production, which are designed with geometrically balanced runner system in order to accomplish filling balance between cavity to cavity during processing. However, even though geometrically balanced runner is used, filling imbalances have been observed. So, many studies for improving filling balance in the multi-cavities molds are worked up. In this study, the Melt-Buffer which is a new runner system for filling balance has been suggested, and a series of experiment about degree of filling balance in cavity-to-cavity was conducted in the mold with the Melt-Buffer. From the experiment, the filling balance was increased up to 5~6% by using the Melt-Buffer.

  • The momentum, heat and mass transport in the melt of several sizes of crucibles are calculated using a three dimensional numerical simulation technique with and without the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model. When turbulent model is not used, non-axisymmetric profiles of velocity, temperature and oxygen concentration appear in the melt of all sizes of crucibles. Axisymmetric profiles are obtained when the k-$\varepsilon$ model is adopted.

  • A phyaical model of the Czochralski method for silicon single crystals is designed to measure the change of velocities and temperature profilles in the melt. Wood's metal(Bi 50%, Pb 26.7%, Sn 13.3%, Cd 10%, m.p. 70℃) is used to simulate the silicon melt in the crucible. To measure the local velocity change, electromagnetic probe is adopted as a velocity sensor. The output voltage of the sensor shows linear relationship to the velocity of the melt.

  • YBCO superconductors were prepared by top-seeded melt growth process using various numbers of seeds. The levitation forces and trapped magnetic fields of the top surfaces of the samples were measured using Nd-B-Fe permanent magnets It was found that the processing time was greatly reduced by multiple seeding, but the properties were decreased as the number of seeds was increased. The degradation of the properties is attributed to the presence of the nonsuperconducting phases at the grain boundaries as result of the entrapment of a residual melt at grain boundaries during melt processing.

  • The pressurized spray system with nitrogen gas was designed to fabricate the spherical AN(ammonium nitrate) particles. When AN melt was sprayed from a nozzle with equivalent diameter of 0.28mm into an ambient dry air, the ligament breakup mechanism of the molten AN was found to be responsible for the droplet formation(or disintegration) of AN melt. In the experimental range of spray temperature with $170{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ and atomization pressure with $0.1{\sim}0.4MPa$, the spherical AN particles with mean diameter of $130{\sim}250{\mu}m$ were obtained.

  • In this study, an experimental work was performed to mold tensile specimens by using the injection molding machine. Melt temperature, mold temperature and the mixed rate of recycled resin were selected as processing parameters for studing the effect of those condition on the shrinkage and weight of molded parts. As a result, the shrinkage was increased with the higher mold and melt temperature and It was more senstive to the change of mold temperature. On the other hand, the weight of molded parts was decreased with the increment of mold and melt temperature.

  • Functionally graded microstructure of centrifugal cast Al-Si alloy, especially distribution of primary Si particles according to the changes of melt pouring temperature and rotation frequency was investigated by numerical simulation. Moving velocity of Si particles increased as the melt pouring temperature and rotational frequency of mold increased. Therefore, segregation tendency of primary Si particles toward inner side of cylindrical sample increased as the melt pouring temperature and rotational frequency of mold increased. Rich distribution region of particles was located at 0.9, 0.7, 0.4 mm from inner surface of cylindrical sample under the centrifugal cast condition of $750^{\circ}C$ melt pouring temperature and 1500, 2000 and 2500 rpm mold rotational frequencies, respectively, by numerical simulation.

  • Silicon single crystals were continuously grown by a modified process. Polycrystalline silicon powder was fed from the top reservoir to the growth chamber. Silicon single crystals were grown from the botton of the growth chamber. The balance between the gravitational force of melt and the centrifugal force originated from the rotation of seed was the one of the main factors to control the diameter of crystals grown and quality, etc.

  • [ $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ ] [(YSN)-123] high $T_c$ composite superconductors with $CeO_2$ addition were systematically investigated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process in air atmosphere. A melt textured $NdBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Nd-123) single crystal was used as a seed for achieving the c-axis alignment large grains perpendicular to the surface of (YSN)-123 composite oxides. The size of $(Y_{0.5}Sm_{0.25}Nd_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting inclusions of the melt textured (YSN)-123 samples with $CeO_2$ addition were remarkably reduced and uniformly distributed within the (YSN)123 superconducting matrix except in the region very close to the Nd-123 seed crystal. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition of 91 K.

  • The ability and fading behavior of inoculant in ductile cast iron melt and the effect of minor element on them were investigated. The result obtanied on nodularization and the performance of inoculant were more distinct when the melt was treated and held at the high temperature range of $1450{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ than at the lower one of $1350{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$. The performance of 5.2%Mg-Fe-Si alloy was the best of 4 nodularizers. That of Fe-75%Si(I) alloy was better than other 4 inoculants. The performance of the Fe-75%Si(I) inoculant was deteoriated by the addition of sulfur or bismuth. On the other hand, that was improved by the addition of cerium, even though its extent was not big.
