Diploscapter coronatus (Cobb, 1893) Cobb, 1913 was first reported on oriental melon (Cucumis melo vars. makuwa Makino) roots from plastic film houses, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Andong, Korea (latitude $N36^{\circ}33^{\prime}$. longitude $E128^{\circ}29^{\prime}$). Diploscapter coronatus is most similar to D. pachys. Species in the genus Diploscapter have a visibly annulated cuticle. The stoma of D. coronatus is 1.5 times longer than the lip region width. The pharyngeal corpus is clearly separated from the isthmus and the vulva is situated around the mid-body. However, it differed by higher ratio of "a", filiform tail and had relatively blunt labial hooks. The Korean population is well matched and within the range of D. coronatus as described from Iran and Ethiopia in de Man's of L, b, c, c', and V. Female length, however, varied between populations: the Ethiopia population female length is longer than in the Korea population (396.4 vs 427.0) while females in the Iran population are smaller than in the Korea population (396.4 vs 350.0). Nematode size may vary due to environmental conditions such as food sources. The position of excretory pores in the Korean population were shorter 53.9-72.5 than in other populations (67-82 and 70-89). Males were uncommon. Males in the Korean population are smaller than females but larger(356.0) than males in the Indian population (306.0).
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of nonwoven fabrics weight(Ounce) on growth, quality and yield of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. var. makwa Mak.). Seedling of 'Gumssaragi-Eunchun' was grafted on 'Shinthozoa' root stock. In this study, The minimum air temperature in 6 ounce at night was $4.8^{\circ}C,\;6.9^{\circ}C$ in 9 ounce, $7.9^{\circ}C$ in 12 ounce and $8.0^{\circ}C$ in 15 ounce, respectively. Leaf length, stem diameter, leaf numbers, leaf area, fresh weight and dry weight for 30 days after planting were better in high minimum air temperature at night than in low minimum air temperature, particularly leaf areas of the plant in 9 ounce was $370cm^2$ at 30 days after planting, $116\%$ in 12 ounce, $129\%$ in 15 ounce. The xylem exudates amount in 9 ounce for 24 hours just after basal stem abscission was 10.1mg. It was 1.2 times much in 12 ounce and 1.9times much in 15 ounce than in 9 ounce at 30 days after planting. The blooming of female was faster by 6 days in 15 and 12 ounce but was delayed by 3 days in 6 ounce than 9 ounce, and the days of blooming to harvesting were shorter by 3 days in 15 ounce and 4 days in 12 ounce but was delayed by 3 days in 6 ounce than in 9 ounce. Fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, flesh thickness, soluble solids, and total yield was the highest in 15 ounce followed by 12 ounce,9 ounce and 6 ounce. Fermented fruit rate was the highest in 6 ounce followed by 9 ounce, 12 ounce and 15 ounce, and marketable fruit rates were 15, 12, 9 and 6 ounce in order. Compared to 1,781kg yield per 10a of 9 ounce, $19\%\;and\;49\%$ was increased under 12 ounce and 15 ounce but $47\%$ were decreased 6 ounce.

This experiment was conducted to investigate planting depth, which applied the basic data for planting growth ability and mechanical planting of oriental melon. 'Gumssaragi-eunchun' variety was approach grafting to 'Shintozoa' and seedling was growing during 45 days in the 9cm pot and then planted on Jan. 16. The comparison of planting plots was carried out for four experimental plots, which were separated into 0cm, 4.5cm, 9cm, standard cultivation, and 12cm planting depth in soil. In the tunnel of vinyl house, the lowest and the highest temperature was $9.3^{\circ}C\;and\;41.2^{\circ}C$, respectively, and humidity was $59\~99\%$ during Jan. 18 and 19. The faster graft-take rate after planting was the deeper planting depth. The growth of 40 days after planting was not significant in each planting plot, except 0cm experimental plot. Fruit weight was the heaviest in 4.5cm planting depth of experimental plot but sugar content and flesh thickness were not significant in each planting depth. The more depth in planting meant the more increase in fermented fruit rate and decrease in marketable fruit rate. Marketable yield was 2,361kg per l0a in 9cm planting plot, which was $2\%\;and\;1\%$ lower than in 0cm and 4.5cm, respectively, and $11\%$ greater than in 12cm planting plot.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the difference among 3-years-used polyolefin films which were J-l, J-2 and J-2 having differences in film thickness, infrared absorption and ultraviolet penetration from Jan. 16, 2006. And 1-year-used polyethylene film K-1 used from Jan. 16, 2009, for covering film of greenhouse for oriental melon cultivation. J-2, J-3 and J-1 films were better for keeping heat in order, and J-2 film was the best in plant growth at early stage. The first blooming and harvesting days in J-2 film were earlier 15 days than those in K-1 film. Chromaticity and soluble solid of harvested fruit in J-2, J-3 and J-1 films were higher than whose in K-1 film. Marketable yields in J-2, J-3 and J-1 films were higher in order.

Melons are mostly grown in soil, but it is susceptible to damage due to injury by continuous cropping such as Fusarium wilt and root rot. Hydroponic cultivation system can overcome the disadvantages of soil cultivation with precise nutrition management and a clean environment. When using the coir substrate, the most environmentally friendly organic substrate used for hydroponics, it is analyzed how the growth and fruit quality of the melon depends on the ratio of chips and dust and the amount of irrigation. The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data of melon hydroponics when cultivated in spring. The two types of the coir substrates used in the experiments were chip and dust ratios of 3 :7 and 5 : 5 respectively. The substrate with high dust ratios had excellent physical characteristics, such as container capacity and total porosity, and the drainage EC level showed a high value of $3.0-6.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. When the amount of irrigation is provided based on the drainage rate, the group provided the nutrient solution on the basis of 10% drainage supplied 91 L per plant, which was reduced by about 30% compared to the group with the highest water supply. In addition, the total drainage showed less than 10 L per plant with a minimum water supply and was reduced by 30 - 70% in substrate with a high dust rates. In substrate with high water supply and high dust ratio, leaf growth and fruit enlargement were good, and the soluble solids content varies greatly from cultivar to cultivar. If you provided the amount of irrigation based on 10% drainage rate, the fruit weight will be decreased, but the amount of irrigation can be reduced. Therefore, it is considered that managing the water & nutrient properly taking into account the characteristics of coir substrate and cultivar can produce melon of uniform quality using hydroponics.
Soil testing for silicon (Si) in the upland soils has not been sufficiently investigated. The objective of this study was to identify a suitable Si extraction method for upland soils of oriental melon (Cucumis melo L.). Thirty-eight surface soil samples and matured leaf samples were collected from plastic film houses in Sungju, Gyeongbuk province. In the laboratory, six different methods were used for extracting Si from the soils. The methods included 0.5 N HCl extraction, 1 N sodium acetate buffer (PH 4.0) extraction, citric acid 1% extraction, water extraction, Tiis buffer pH 7.0 extraction, and extraction after incubation with water for 1 week. The concentration of dissolved Si in soil extracts from all methods was determined colorimetrically. With 1 N sodium acetate buffer extraction, as the available soil Si increased, the concentration ofSi in oriental melon leaf increased until around $14g\;SiO_2\;kg^{-1}$ was reached in the form of a saturation curve. Also, among the methods studied, extraction with 1 N sodium acetate buffer was the only method provided a significant linear correlation with oriental melon leaf Si content in the range of extractable soil Si lower than the level which inducing Si saturation in oriental melon leaf. These results indicate that 1 N sodium acetate buffer extraction procedure is the best soil Si test method for upland soils of oriental melon. This sodium acetate buffer extraction procedure is rapid and quite well acquainted with scientists and farmers, since the method has been used for routine paddy soil testing.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of temperature and relative humidity (RH) that might affect the pollen germination rate and pollen tube length in oriental melon. The experiment was performed using three cultivars namely 'Mallijangseong', 'Ohbokggul', and 'Joeundae' wherein environmental conditions were controlled by three different temperatures $15^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$ and also three RH levels 30%, 60%, and 90%. Based on the results in terms of temperature, true to all cultivars, plants exposed to $25^{\circ}C$ had the highest pollen germination rate while plants exposed to $15^{\circ}C$ had the lowest. Among the three cultivars, 'Mallijangseong' had the highest in terms of pollen germination rate, followed by 'Ohbokggul', and lastly was 'Joeundae' that showed the lowest germination rate. In the case of pollen tube length, pollen exposed under $35^{\circ}C$ showed the longest tube length, followed by pollen under $25^{\circ}C$, and pollen under $15^{\circ}C$ remarkably had the shortest tube length. Across the three cultivars 'Ohbokggul' had the longest pollen tube length. In the case of RH, pollen germination response among three cultivars depends on the humidity conditions but based on the results, there was no significant differences although high germination rate was observed in highest humidity condition. Between each cultivar, 'Ohbokggul' had the lowest pollen germination rate compared with 'Mallijangseong' and 'Joeundae' after exposure to different RH conditions wherein pollen germination showed significant differences among treatments. The pollen collected under 60% RH had the longest pollen tube length, followed by 30%, and the shortest was under 90% RH. In general, 'Ohbokggul' had the longest pollen tube length while 'Joeundae' had the shortest among the three cultivars.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of thermokeeping bag with 30 and 45cm width on the growth, fruit quality and yield of oriental melon. Difference of the highest temperature was not observed but the lowest temperature of thermokeeping bag with 30cm and 45cm width was higher than that of control by 0.9$^{\circ}C$ and 1.8$^{\circ}C$, respectively The highest soil temperature of thermokeeping bag with 30cm and 45cm width was higher than that of control by 1.9$^{\circ}C$ and 9.9$^{\circ}C$, respectively and the lowest soil temperature of thermokeeping bag with 30cm and 45cm width was higher than that of control by 0.9$^{\circ}C$ and 1.2$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Growth characteristics in terms of stem length, leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight, fruit weight, flesh thickness and soluble solid were higher as the width of thermokeeping bag was winder. Marketable yield per 10a of 30 and 45cm thermokeeping bag was higher 5.3% and 19.2% than that of control with 996.4kg per 0.1ha.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of flooding on the quality and yield of an oriental melon. Waterlogging for four periods, 0(not flooded), 5, 10 or 15h, were applied to 30cm depth from the soil surface. The soluble solids content of fruit flesh measured at 7 days after waterlogging was 12.6 Brix in not-flooded plot, but it decreased by 4.7-5.6 Brix in plots flooded 5, 10 or 15h, respectively. Difference in fruit hardness between the no-flooded and 5h-flooded plots was not observed, while a significant decrease in fruit hardness was observed in 10 or 15 h-flooded plots at 7 days after waterlogging. Decrease in fruit hardness in all plots except control plot was observed at 13 days after waterlogging. The percent decayed fruits at 7 days after waterlogging was not observed, but at 13 days after waterlogging it gradually increased as duration of flooding increased. The incidence of downy or powdery mildews increased is significantly in plots flooded for 5, 10 or 15h as compared to the not-flooded control. However, population of cotton caterpillar decreased in the flooded plots. Marketable fruits yield per 10a was 616.2kg in no-flooded plot, but it decreased by 33%, 45% and 66%, respectively, in plots flooded for 5, 10 or 15h. The waterlogging during fruit enlargement stage significantly deteriorated fruit quality and decreased marketable fruit yield.
This experiment was conducted to improve light environment of oriental melon cultivation in winter season. Three polyolefin (J-1, J-2 and J-3), two polyethylene (K-1 and K-2) films and K-3 commonly used in farmhouses, with different film thickness, ultraviolet ray interception and infrared ray absorption ratio were used. Heat conservation of J-2 was highest, compare to K-3, J-3 and J-1. Early growth of J-1, J-2 and J-3 were faster than K-3, and Days required to harvest of K-3 were shortened about 10 days. Marketable yield of K-3 was 991kg per 10a, those of J-1, J-2, J-3, K-1 and K-2 were increased 21%, 37%, 24%, 13% and 4% compare to K-3, respectively. Especially, harvesting of J-1, J-2, J-3 and K-1 were focused on early (50%) and middle stage (40%). Polyolefin with higher heat conservation improved growth and harvesting in early and shortened days to harvesting in winter season.
