  • Chemical investigation of the plant Tristemma hirtum P. Beauv (Melastomataceae) resulted to the isolation of a new flavonol glycoside named quercetin-7-O-${\alpha}$-D-arabinofuranoside (1), together with nine known compounds including 3'-hexadecanoyl-2'-(9aZ)-tetradecanoyl-glycerol 1'-O-[${\beta}$-D-galactopyranosyl-(1'' ${\rightarrow}$ 6'')-${\alpha}$-D-galactopyranoside] (2), arjunolic acid (3), ${\beta}$-sitosterol-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (4), terminolic acid (5), quercetin (6), asiatic acid (7), maslinic acid (8), $1{\beta}$-O-galloylpedunculagin (9) and 6-hydroxyapigenin 7-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (10) from the methanol extract using normal and reversed phase column chromatography. The structures of these compounds were determined by comprehensive interpretation of their spectral data mainly including 1D- 2D-NMR ($^1H-^1H$ COSY, HSQC, and HMBC) spectroscopic and ESI-TOF-MS mass spectrometric analysis.

  • Two newly recorded species of Melastomataceae, Medinilla rubicunda and M. septentrionalis, were found from the Phnom Bokor National Park and the Central Cardamom Protected Forest in Cambodia. Medinilla rubicunda is similar to M. laurifolia from Indonesia (Sumatra and Java) and Thailand, but is readily distinguished from the latter by its shorter petiole and a cyme bearing fewer than six flowers. Medinilla septentrionalis is similar to M. nana from China (Yunnan) and Vietnam, but is clearly distinguished from the latter by its terete branchlets, which have a thin and not a corky bark. Descriptions, photographs, and a diagnostic key of the three species of Cambodian Medinilla are provided for species identification.

  • We report previously unrecognized flowering plants of Lao PDR found during a botanical survey of Lao PDR in 2015-2016. We found Phyllagathis tuberosa (C. Hansen) Cellinese & S. S. Renner (Melastomataceae) and Tolypanthus pustulatus Barlow (Loranthaceae) in the Phou Khao Khouay National Biodiversity Conservation Area (PKKNBCA), previously only known from type localities in Thailand. This is the first report of Phyllagathis tuberosa and the genus Tolypanthus in the Lao PDR. We also found Lonicera bournei Hemsl. (Caprifoliaceae) in the proposed Phosabous National Protected Area (PNPA) of Xiangkhoang, neglected with regard to the flora of Laos since its initial report in early 20th century. The current report will augment our understanding of the floristic relationships among SE Asian countries and will help elucidate the biodiversity of Lao PDR.
