  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the purpose, effectiveness and problems of HACCP system implementation for small, medium and large scale of swine farms implementing HACCP. Small and medium scale swine farms stated that the primary purpose of HACCP implementation was to receive government funding, but large scale swine farm was answered to improve the farm's competitiveness. In the case of small farms, the effect of HACCP implementation responded to systematic farm management as the top priority, while mid-scale and large-scale swine farms were said to improve farm sanitation. In addition, the biggest problems caused by the implementation of HACCP were the difficulty of improving the consciousness of the employees (small farm) and the records management (medium scale, large farm) by HACCP implementation. In order to solve these problems, it is necessary to adjust the number of HACCP evaluation items of pig farm and HACCP education for employees.

  • This study was conducted to compare the mortality number of swine between before and after HACCP implementation on different scales of swine farm. The study was carried out by randomly selected sixty swine farms (twenty small, twenty midium and twenty large scales of farm) located in all around Korea. The results were as follows: In small scale swine farm, The mortality number due to respiratory, diarrhea and accidental death tended to be decreased compared to before HACCP implementation. In the case medium scale farm, the mortality number due to diarrhea significantly decreased after HACCP compared to before HACCP. Also, in both medium and large scale farms, the number of total mortality number significantly decreased with HACCP implementation. We believe that this effect is considered to be due to the operation of the HACCP prerequisite program. We are expecting that our results might be used for producing safer livestock products by improving livestock products HACCP policy.

  • The aim of this study was to examine the effect of HACCP system implementation on the budget for medicine use, antibiotic utilization, and productivity of swine farms in Korea. Data were collected form thirty swine farms before and after implementation of HACCP system. Parturition rate, total number of piglets, number of initial weaning piglets, number of weaning piglets, survival rate of piglets after weaning, date of weaning piglets, piglet per sow per year, and market piglet per sow per year tended to be higher after HACCP system implementation. In contrast, price for medicine used per month, number of antibiotic used, the farm number of feeds containing antibiotics in each, growing stages added at the feed company, and the farm number of feeds containing antibiotics in each growing stages added at the swine farm were lower after HACCP system implementation. Due to increase in the feed cost recently, production cost for shipment in HACCP system implemented swine farms had increased in this study. In conclusion, our results indicated that the implementation of HACCP system might be effective in reducing medical expenses and improving the productivity.

Effect of Humified Straw Used as a Medium of Trickling Filter with Livestock Wastewater on the Growth of Bunching Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., var. crispa) and Soil Chemical Properties

  • A feasible way to utilize small-scale livestock farm wastewater was explored. In place of common support materials rice straw was employed as a support medium of trickling filter for pig farm wastewater treatment. The straw medium which was humified for 20 days after wastewater treatment and mixed with soil significantly enhanced in general the development of bunching lettuce grown under greenhouse conditions. Improvement of soil chemical properties in terms of fertility was also achieved by the addition of humified straw medium after wastewater treatment. It was found that rice straw served as a satisfactory support medium of trickling filters with the wastewater treatment concerning removals of biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and suspended solids.

  • Utilization of crop residues was investigated in search of ecologically desirable treatment of wastewater from small-scale swine farm. Instead of common materials rice stray was used as a support medium of tricking filter with the farm, wastewater treatment. The treated rice stave medium was dried, crushed, and directly added to soil, where bunching lettuce seedlings were grown under greenhouse conditions. The development of bunching lettuce was significantly enhanced by the application of the straw medium up to 2100 kg/10a. Little changes in soil chemical properties were observed at harvesttime, except the pH which was raised by more than 1 unit, and the content of Mg which was depleted presumably by the uptake of the plant.
