For decades, scientists and clinicians have examined methods of measuring scalp hair growth. There has been a greater need for reliable, economical and minimally invasive means of measuring hair growth and, specifically, response to Oriental medicine therapy. We review the various methods of measurement described to date, their limitations and value to the clinician. In our opinion, the potential of computer-assisted technology in this field is yet to be maximized and the currently available tools are less than ideal. The most valuable means of measurement at the present time are global photography and phototrichogram-based techniques (with digital image analysis). Subjective scoring systems are also of value in the overall assessment of response to therapy and these are under-utilized and merit further refinement.
There is great demand of nutraceutical secondary metabolites in the world so as to feed the population by improving agricultural production with new varieties of food crops but what is still more important is to add nutrition into the food. Physalis minima, plant of Solanaceae family, contain certain secondary metabolites which enhance the over all metabolic functions of the body. Withasteroids are one of such phytochemicals that are generally regarded as safe. These chemicals are almost monopoly of the plants of Solanaceae. The leaves, stem and roots of P. minima have been examined to yield several steroids, identification of which has been discussed in this paper. These withasteroids contribute to the potential nutraceutical and health function value since incorporation of withanolides in the diet may prevent or decrease the growth of tumors in humans.
Submerged cultures of Ganoderma lucidum, a valuable mushroom in traditional Chinese medicine, were used for production of bioactive Banoderic acids and Ganoderma polysaccharides. The significant effects of oxygen supply were demonstrated in both shake flasks and bioreactors. By changing the medium loading volume in a shake flask, a different value of initial volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient ($K_L$a) was obtained, and a higher $K_L$a value led to a higher biomass density and a higher productivity of both intracellular polysaccharide and ganoderic acid. In a stirred bioreactor, at an initial $K_L$a of 78.2 $h^{-1}$, a maximal cell concentration of 15.6 g/L by dry weight was obtained, as well as a maximal intracellular polysarcharide (IPS) production of 2.2 g/L and its maximal productivity of 220 mg/(L.d). An increase of initial $K_L$a led to a higher production and productivity of GA, and the GA production and productivity at an initial $K_L$a of 96.0 $h^{-1}$ was 1.8-fold those at an initial $K_L$a of 16.4 $h^{-1}$. The fundamental information obtained in this study may be useful for efficient large-scale production of these valuable bioactive products by the submerged cultures.
Green buckwheat seedlings have been used as a pollution free vegetable and medicinal crop for a long time. Some of the reasons are the rapid growth rate, the high protein and rutincontent, and a more favorable ratio of leaf to stem than mature plants. Off-crop season cultivation techniques were developed for growing the young and green buckwheat vegetable of higher quality and yield, and for its increased value-added income. The effects of planting season, seeding rate, seed bed soil fertility and type, and seedling growth period on yield and rutin content were determined for vegetable and medicinal use. The young vegetable yields. in the off season culture ranged from 2.62t/ha to 22.7t /ha. The highest vegetable yield was 22.7t /ha for 25 days old seedlings grown in the polyethylene film tunnel from March 30 to April 25, 1991 where seedling rate was 360kg /ha. Buckwheat vegetable quality and income were dependent upon planting season, seeding rate, growing duration and temperature, and facilities of raising seedlings. Protein content of buck-wheat seedlings was from 21.5% to 17.2%. Rutin content of the vegetable was 53.9~31.7mg /100g for the whole plant in average. The protein and rutin content was significantly varied due to the different environmental conditions including fertility and type of seed bed soil, growing duration, temperature of the green house, and polyethylene film house and tunnel.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the main traits related to photosynthesis by multiple regression analysis. The photosynthetic rate showed more significant increase in shaded leaves of plant than in non-shaded leaves of plant after shading treatment for 44 days. Negative correlation was found between net photosynthetic rate and SLA(specific leaf area). However, the values obtained from the linear equation were different and were highly significance. From the above results, net photosynthetic rate of shading treatment is higher than that of control in the same SLA. We also found that there were correlation between stomatal conductance and SPAD as well as net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance. By the multiple regression analysis, SPAD value, SLA, stomatal conductance and leaf water potential showed a higher correlation coefficient of $r=0.848^{**}$. From the results, out of 4 factors(SPAD value, SLA, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential) stomatal conductance was main factor in the view points of partial regressing.

To analyze the genetic relationship 8 accessions of Ostericum koreanum Kitakawa, random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) analysis was performed using 60 Operon primers. The 25 primers out of 60 random primers were amplified DNA by PCR using genomic DNA of O. koreanum. Eighty-five (49.1%) among 173 bands derived from 25 primers showed poly morphism, On the basis of similarity coefficient analysis by UPGMA, 8 accessions of O. koreanum Kitakawa could be classified into three groups at the similarity coefficient value of 0.71. Group I contained three accessions (Nam Gangwhal), Group II contained one accession (Nam Gangwhal) and Group III contained four accessions (Buk Gangwhal), The range of total genetic similarity coefficient value of 8 accessions of O. koreanum Kitakawa was $0.63{\sim}0.96$. Buk Gangwhal was flowered 18 to 26 days earlier than Nam Gangwhal, and Nam Gangwhal leaf stalk was thin and long as bolting rate high compared with Buk Gangwhal.
Physico-chemical characteristics and chemical composition of seed oil of Sapium japonicum were determined by various analysis methods. Physio-chemical characteristics of the extracted oil from fresh seed were specific gravity (0.928), refraction index (1.477), acid value (2.30), saponification number (190.0), and iodine value (126.0). Neutral lipid (93%) in seed oil was identified as major components, followed by glycolipid (4.9%) and phospholipid (1.3%). In GC analysis, nine fatty acids were presented in the seed oil. Among fatty acids, predominant fatty acids were oleic acid (45.8%) and linoleic acid (35.6%). The contents of fatty acids of seed oil somewhat varied with their storage period. Composition of fatty acids from lipid fractions which were isolated on silica open column was investigated. Major fatty acids in three lipid fractions were linoleic acid and linolenic acid. The fatty acid contents of fresh seed oil derived from each lipid fraction were generally high comapred to storage seed oil. From the above results, seed oil of Sapium Japonicum could be useful in cosmetics, detergents and a few pharmaceuticals.
From the EtOAc fraction of Eugenia caryophyllata, four compounds were isolated through activity-guided silica gel column chromatography, From the result of spectroscopic data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as 1-allyl-4-hydroxy-3-methoxybezene acetate (eugenol acetate, 1), 1-allyl-4-hydroxy-3-methoxybezene (eugenol, 2), $3{\beta}-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic$ acid (oleanolic acid, 3) and $2{\alpha}$, $3{\beta}-dihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic$ acid (maslinic acid, 4). Compounds 3 and 4 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Also, compounds 1, 2 and 3 exhibited relatively high platelet aggregation inhibitory activity with the $IC_{50}$ values of 0.24, 0.09 and 0.07 mM, respectively. Compound 2 significantly prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) with the value of $124{\pm}11.2$ seconds as compared to the control with the value of $37.5{\pm}2.2$ seconds at the concentration of 50 ${\mu}g/ml$. Compounds 1 and 3 revealed inhibitory activity on farnesyl protein transferase (FPTase) with the $IC_{50}$ values of 0.49 and 0.24 mM and compounds 1 and 2 highly inhibited the growth of rat-H-ras cells with the $Gl_{50}$ values of 6.63 and 5.70 ${\mu}M$, respectively.
Licorice, a traditional Korean medicinal plant, is recognized for its main active ingredient, glycyrrhizin. The level of glycyrrhizin in Chinese licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) is lower than the reference level (2.5%) set by the Korean Pharmacopoeia, reducing its value as a medicinal herb. In this study, we aimed to overcome this problem by generating an interspecific licorice hybrid by crossing European licorice (G. glabra) with Chinese licorice, resulting in the production of 32 $F_1$ lines. A comparison of genetic traits revealed variations in glycyrrhizin content among lines, ranging from 1.5 to 5.6%, with a mean value of 3.2%; these values are higher than that of the parental plants. Additionally, 25 lines (78.1%) had a glycyrrhizin content greater than 2.5%, which is higher than the reference level set by the Korean Pharmacopoeia. Four of these lines had glycyrrhizin levels higher than the WHO recommended level of 4.0%. A comparison of phenotypic characteristics showed that the leaves of the hybrids possessed all of the characteristics of European and Chinese licorice; however, the stems of most hybrids had characteristics of European licorice. Finally, we determined the genetic distances of 34 samples of Glycyrrhiza plants (parents, 32 $F_1$ lines) by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD); the $F_1$ lines showed a close genetic distance. We plan to develop to a cultivar using five of these lines (glycyrrhizin content < 4.0%).

This study was carried out to find out the optimum method of preparation of indigo standard solution and its stability, and to investigate the indigo contents in Niram, blue dye extract, from a total of 7 indigo plants and 34 breeding lines of Persicaria tinctoria H. Gross. Proper solvent for indigo standard was dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and appropriate concentration was 1 mg of indigo in 10 mL of DMSO. Absorbance value of UV/Vis Spectrophotometer at 620 nm of standard solution was changed decreasingly 12 hours after the preparation of standard solution irrespective of the storage conditions such as temperature and light. Average value of absorbance of 8-fold diluted standard solutions prepared daily during 16 days was $0.210{\pm}0.005$, indicating the powder of indigo compound was stable chemically. Calibration curve was made for quantitative analysis of indigo of 7 Niram samples, and indigo contents ranged from 0.69% to 18.76% showing relatively larger variation. Across all 34 breeding lines, the range of indigo content was from 7.9 mg to 56.4 mg per 100 g of fresh leaves, averaging 25.2 mg of indigo content and showing a 47.7% coefficient of variation.
