  • Objectives : Through this study, it would be confirmed that specific expression for efficacy of medicinal material has multiple meanings. And through the methodology to determine the multi meaning, it could be contributed to lighten ambiguous expressions for efficacy of medicinal material. Methods : The premise is that the efficacy and treatment target data are related to each other. Word cloud has been used analyzing the efficacy and treatment target data for medicinal materials. Then classic and modern documents were analyzed by the search. Results : Even though searching all related references as well as comparing the efficacy and treatment target data were done, some medicinal materials having 'Salchung[殺蟲]' as an efficacy are not expected to treat the disease associated with the parasite. Through the analysis of classic and modern documents, it was found that 'Salchung[殺蟲]' is not used only as a means of anthelmintic efficacy. But through the above analysis method some medicinal materials having 'Guchung[驅蟲]' as an efficacy are expected to treat the disease associated with the parasite, and 'Guchung[驅蟲]' seems to be almost used as a means of anthelmintic efficacy. Conclusions : If a certain expression for efficacy of medicinal material is used as a single meaning obviously, ambiguous expressions need to be clear. And if a certain expression for efficacy of medicinal material seems to have multiple meanings, the additional informations are to be supplemented for exact wording.

  • Background: Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) is one of the most important medicinal plants in the Orient. Among nine cultivars of P. ginseng, Chunpoong commands a much greater market value and has been planted widely in Korea. Chunpoong has superior quality "Chunsam" ($1^{st}$ grade ginseng) when made into red ginseng. Methods: A rapid and reliable method for discriminating the Chunpoong cultivar was developed by exploiting a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the auxin repressed protein gene of nine Korean ginseng cultivars using specific primers. Results: An SNP was detected between Chunpoong and other cultivars, and modified allele-specific primers were designed from this SNP site to specifically identify the Chunpoong cultivar and P. quinquefolius via multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Conclusion: These results suggest that great impact to prevent authentication of precise Chunpoong and other cultivars using the auxin repressed protein gene. We therefore present an effective method for the authentication of the Chunpoong cultivar of P. ginseng and P. quinquefolius.

  • A new strain, GS603, having ${\beta}$-glucosidase activity was isolated from soil of a ginseng field, and its ability to convert major ginsenoside $Rb_1$ to minor ginsenoside or gypenoside was studied. Strain GS603 was identified as an Intrasporangium species by phylogenetic analysis and showed high ginsenoside-converting activity in LB and TSA broth but not in nutrient broth. The culture broth of the strain GS603 could convert ginsenoside $Rb_1$i into two metabolites, which were analyzed by TLC and HPLC and shown to be the minor ginsenoside $F_2$ and gypenoside XVII by NMR.

  • Objectives : Our study aims to help users take the medicinal materials in a desirable manner by providing toxic and contraindicating information, based on the ontology of medicinal materials in traditional Korean medicine (TKM). Methods : The toxic and contraindicating data are extracted for 160 medicinal materials from 67 books published in Korea and China. The extracted data are linked to the medicinal material in the ontology, respectively. Results : We in this paper construct an ontology for toxic and contraindicating data of medicinal materials in traditional Korean medicine (TKM), extending our conventional ontology. Based on the ontology, we devised a web-based searching tool that enables users to share the toxic and contraindicating information of medicinal materials. Conclusions : The contents in our ontology are facts based on the books, while the addition of clinical knowledge may elaborate the ontology. Moreover, the addition of easy explanations for terminologies in our ontology is required to help users which are not familiar to TKM.
