A study on the change of the views on E.M.T. profession of the E.M.T. college students (일부 전문대 응급구조학생의 응급구조전문직관의 변화에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the change of perceptions related to E.M.T. profession of E.M.T. student and to provide the basic data for development of curriculum. The subjects of the survey were 216 students from 3 junior college by questionaire from November 25 to November 29, 1996 in Kwang-Ju, Cheong-Ju, and Kong-Ju. The results were analyzed using the SAS and can be summerized as follows : 1. The view on profession was a statistically significant difference inspecial knowledge & skill training (t=-1.686, P<.001), high income (t=-0.753, P<.05) 2. The view on competence as a E.M.T. was a statistically significant differncein sufficient professional knowledge on the E.M.T. (t=-1.144, P<.001), own's health (t=-0.808, P<.001), sincerity and responsibility (t=-1.429, P<.01), satisfaction and effort (t=-1.335, P<.01), boundary of affairs (t=-1.356, P<.01) 3. The view on E.M.T. profession was a statistically significant difference inprotect of pt. life & to relieve the pain (t=-2.388, P<.001) 4. The view on necessary knowledge of E.M.T. was a statistically significant difference in patient assessment (t=-2.168, P<.001), ACLS (t=1.678, P<.001), hemorrhage & shock (t=-3.252, P<.001), trauma (t=-4.284, P<.001), cardiopulmonary disturbance (t=-2.897, P<.001), acute abdomen (t=-4.284, P<.001), neonatal disease (t=-4.032, P<.001), OBGY disease(t=-4.151, P<.001), emergency delivery (t=-2.825, P<.001), infectious disease (t=-2.930, P<.001), environmental emergency (t=-3.123, P<.05), recording(t=2.22, P<.05) 5. The view on ideology of E.M.T. was a statistically significant difference in belief & faith (t=-2.344, P<.001), knowing of own (t=-2.142, P<.01), humanity (t=-2.581, P<.05), knowing of patient (t=-2.079, P<.05).

Comparison of Major and Job Satisfaction of Students and Graduates in Dental Hygiene and Nursing (대전 일부 치위생학과와 간호학과 재학생 및 졸업생의 전공과 업무 만족도 비교)

  • Although dental hygiene has haven a special domain of knowledge and its own business territory, people have misunderstandings about dental hygienists as nurses or nirses' aides in Korea. Inadequate knowledge could make negative results for university applicants to choose department of dental hygiene. This study was aimed to compare major and job satisfaction of students and graduates in dental hygiene and nursing for objective comparison and suggestion for dental hygiene. The subjects were 98 dental hygiene students, 113 nursing students, 53 dental hygienists, and 53 nurses by convenience sampling in Daejeon. The questionnaire consisted of satisfaction of college life, social identity, career path and job. ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc analysis was used with SPSS 20.0 program. Although dental hygiene students scored lower than nursing students in satisfaction of college life, social identity, career path and job, dental hygienists, nurse and dental hygiene students didn't have different satisfaction of job. Dental hygienists scored the lowest in relation with clinical work and major curriculum, and sexual discrimination. Nurses scored the lowest in working condition and salary. Dental hygienists and dental hygiene students had lower scores in information and advice of career path, entrance to graduate school, stable work, family's pride of my major, social position and so on. We suggested the community of dental hygiene should try to promote dental hygienists to public, the community of dentists should give the stable working condition, and the department of dental hygiene should improve the major curriculum to relate with clinical work.

Development of Bachelor Nursing Programme (일 대학 간호학과 교육 과정 개발 연구)

  • The educational preparation of nurses has been the focus of considerable debate globally. It is needed the change of the basic nursing education for professional nurse to prepare the trends of the health care needs of clients for coming new generation. And also it is believed that educational preparation for being nurses is to be responsible to clients' needs. The purpose of the study was to develop a baccalaureate program in nursing. This study were implemented through three stages from April 2001, to April 2002.: preparation stage which were consisted of reviewing of the literatures, interviewing the fellow nurses in a variety workplace, and consulting professors who were concerned with the nursing education to identify the present educational problems, and analyzing the contents of seven major courses in nursing education, evaluation stage about a new developed curriculum with the directors of the five nursing schools, and confirmation stage of new developed education programme. The developed education programme was designed as a four year program with 126 credit hours including 39 credit hours of liberal arts, 34 credit hours of supplementary courses, and 53 credit hours of nursing major based on the four basic nursing dimensions of human, health, environment and nursing. Nursing majors were consisted of Nursing Ⅰ(oxygenation), Nursing Ⅱ(nutrition elimination), Nursing Ⅲ(activity rest), Nursing Ⅳ(neurologic- endocrine protection), Nursing Ⅴ(fluids electrolytes/sex reproductive), Nursing Ⅵ(psycho-social), Community Health Nursing, Fundamental Nursing, School Health, and Emergency care. This new nursing programme was focused on the nursing education for prevention and rehabilitation nursing care as well as the acute and chronic nursing care at hospital, on the integrated nursing programme to become effective, and the nursing process to encourage the critical thinking. The new education programme focused on the professional nurses who are responsible the nursing ethics, communication skills, and professional beliefs to suit the future trends in health. And also it will be needed for faculties to manage the integrated curriculum, to analyze the contents of each subject, and to communicate with each other before a new education programme apply to their education programme in future. Status and Improvement of Curriculum in University for Picture Archiving and Communication System (의료영상저장전송시스템에 대한 대학교육과정의 현황과 개선방향)

  • The purpose of the study was to present basic data of curriculum of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and to propose improved directions. To research clinical PACS education needs, radiological technologist who related on PACS was surveyed in 12 (55%) of capital area, 6 (27%) of middle area and 4 (18%) of southern area of Korea and for the medical institutes, 8 (36%) of over 1000 beds, 10 (45%) of 500 to 1000 beds and 4 (19%) of less 500 beds. And, to research the status of university education the survey was conducted in 6 of capital area, 6 of middle area and 6 of southern area. As a result, 95.5% of respondents in radiological technologist group thought that giving precede education for PACS and enlarging state-exam would be necessary. In university group, 78% of respondents answered that PACS was equipped and, 82% of them answered that it is very important to study PACS as major. Many universities, however, did not standardize major title and contents so a study about them needs to be followed up.

A Study on the Curriculums of the Nursing Department of Junior Colleges in Seoul and Kyungin Area (간호교육 개선을 위한 교과과정 비교분석 - 서울$\cdot$경인지역 전문대학을 중심으로 -)

  • This study was designed to set up more developed curriculum in Nursing department of a junior college. The sample for the study were fifteen curriculums of fifteen selected junior colleges in Seoul and Kyunggi area. The credits and hours of each curriculum were analyzed into means and compared with the one of the example college. The data were categorized into seven sections; cultural subject, basic medical science, major subjects such as Nursing, Fundamental Nursing, electives, teaching and non-teaching subjects, and clinical practice. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics. The results of the study were as follows; 1. Credit hours of Cultural subjects of each college ranges from $5.8\%\;to\;25.7\%$ of the total graduate credit hours; most commonaly lectured subjects are English 05 colleges), Korean (11 colleges), psychology (10 colleges), and computer (10 colleges). 2. In the case of the example college, Anatomy and Psychology were jointed as one subject, Basic Nursing Science, and some more study in depth should be made to develop more of this type of conjunction among related subjects on basic medical science. 3. As for the mendatory subjects of the example college, subjects on Adult Nursing was fourteen credits (14 hours), which was higher than the average 12.9 hours of other colleges compared. 4. Credit hours of Basic Nursing Laboratory were eight to ten credits (12-18 hours), which was higher than actual class hours. As more and more hospitals test clinical aptitude when recruiting nurses, more emphasis should be paid to the clinical practice. 5. Among fifteen sample curriculums six to twelve electives were offered with twelve to twenty-three credits. Most commonly opened subjects were Physical Examination (5), Nursing English (14). and Geriatrics Nursing (13). Nursing English are considered to be more important in the view of clinical practice. and Oriental Nursing, Nursing Information and Health Insurance Management should be considered as specialized subjects. 6. Teaching and Non-teaching subjects In case of the example school. Clinical Emergency Medicine, Introduction to Emergency Medicine were offered for these non-teaching class students so they could prepare for the qualification examination. 7. Clinical Practice The average credit hours for clinical practice of the sample college were 20.9 credit hours $(66.5\%)$ and the example school offered twenty credit hours which was slightly lower than the other forteen.

Actual Survey of College Students' Knowledge of First Aid (대학생의 응급처치 지식수준 실태 조사)

  • This study tries to examine the level of safety consciousness and first aid knowledge of 124 college students who attend non-public health departments in Gwangju from April 1 to 30, 2003 and apply the results of the study to curriculum. The results of this study are as follows; 1. On experiences of need of first-aid, 87.5% of respondents said 'yes' and there was a significant difference in the number of their siblings($x^2$ = 7.482, p = .048). 2. Sources of education of first aid were mostly at school(46.8%), no education(23.4%), through mass communication(22.6%) and by themselves(7.3%). There were significant differences by characteristics in sex($x^2$ = 30.230, p = .000), year($x^2$ = 10.821, p = .013) and mother's education($x^2$ = 18.932, p = .025). 3. Sources of information of first aid were mostly through TV(46.8%), followed by others (42.7%), newspapers(7.3%) and magazines(3.2%). 4. On the opinions of the most suitable period for educating first aid, elementary school was highest(41.9%), followed by kindergarten(29.0%), middle school(21.0%) and high school (8.1%) and there were significant difference by characteristics of subjects in sex($x^2$=9.689, p= .021) and year($x^2$=19.661, p= .000). 5. Score of knowledge level of safety consciousness was mean $71.58{\pm}12.05$ based on Likert 5-point scale with a full mark of 100 points and there was a significance only in current residence of subjects' general characteristics(F or t=3.894, p=.023). 6. Score of knowledge level of first aid was mean $62.73{\pm}13.29$ based on Likert 3-point scale with a full mark of 90 points and there was a significance only in residential type of subjects' general characteristics(F or t=3.058, p= .031). Although college students felt needs of first aid more than middle and high school students, it was found that their actual safety consciousness and knowledge level of first aid were low. Therefore, knowledge and ability should be developed to save human life from all kinds of emergencies and safety accident and first aid subjects should be separated in college curriculum and opportunity for actual education should be given.

The Educational Need of Forensic Medicine for Emergency Medical Technicians in 119 Rescue Service (119구급대 응급구조사에 대한 법의학교육의 필요성)

  • An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a well-trained emergency responder to provide emergency medical services to the critically ill and injured patient. In various situations, EMT may destroy potential physical evidences associated with the crime scene or determination of real cause of death. This study was aimed to evaluate the educational need of forensic medicine in Korean EMT. Questionnaires were administered to 592 EMTs during March 2007. The response rate was 60.3%(357 EMTs). In questionnaires there were 13 questions regarding the general characteristics, 16 questions about roles of EMTs related with forensic circumstances, 9 questions about the education related to forensic medicine. Questionnaires rated on a 4-point Likert scale or 5-point Likert scale. Most of 119 rescue EMTs had experienced with situations related to crime or unexpected sudden death. EMTs had arrived to the scenes earlier than police and complained of some difficulties related with deficit of forensic knowledge. EMTs wanted to receive continuous educations about forensic medicine. In order to reduce dissatisfaction with EMTs roles and to improve crime scene preservations, Emergency Medical Services policies should provide regular educational curriculum by forensic pathologists and promote legal responsibilities for 119 rescue EMTs.

Study on Stress and Burnout in Medical Education at the School of Korean Medicine (한의학전문대학원 재학생들의 학업 스트레스와 학업소진에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives: Medical students suffer from mental health and academic problems due to academic stress. We investigated academic stress and exhaustion along with psychological issues caused by medical education during the years in the School of Korean Medicine. Methods: Two hundred fifty-one university students from the School of Korean Medicine, Pusan National University, were asked to complete the Medical Stress Scale (MSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS), Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) three times during each semester for two years from 2013 onwards. We analyzed the influence of school term and vacation on educational stress and negative affect with the T-test. The Pearson's correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to predict changes during the first semester or first years of study in the School of Korean Medicine. Results: Academic stress and burnout increased steadily until the first semester of third grade, which was measured with MSS and MBI-SS. The anxiety level was highest when the students started the first grade and it decreased significantly after the first semester. Negative affect repeatedly increased significantly after each school term; however, it reduced after each vacation. In the first grade, 19.5% of the last measure of MSS can be explained with the first measure of MSS. Discussion: This study extensively reviewed the trends and characteristics of four years of academic stress and its related psychological influence, and discussed its importance for developing a more efficient academic curriculum for traditional Korean Medicine.

Changes in Perceptions and Attitudes of Medical Students toward End-of-Life Care after Hospice and Palliative Medicine Education

  • Purpose: High-quality hospice and palliative medicine curricula are necessary in Korean medical schools. This study evaluated changes in students' knowledge and attitudes toward both hospice and palliative care following the completion of a course on these topics, as well as the course's overall role in the basic medical education curriculum. Methods: Questionnaires measuring knowledge and attitudes were collected before and after the course from 76 fourth-year medical students, who had received instructions integrating both hospice and palliative care in 2016. Results: The questionnaire item "Select the correct answer on the use of opioid pain control in hospice and palliative care" changed the most in terms of number of correct answers pre- and post-course (3.50 and 5.32, respectively; P<0.001). Pre- and post-course, the numbers of students who answered "Strongly Agree" and "Agree" to questions concerning their attitudes toward hospice and palliative care ("I know the purposes and roles of hospice and palliative care") were 17 (22.4%) and 65 (85.6%), respectively (P≤0.001). Affirmative responses also increased for "As a pre-physician, I know when to describe and advise hospice and palliative care to patients", from 22 (28.9%) to 65 (85.6%; P≤0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that comprehensive hospice education in the form of an integrated educational course might promote changes in medical students' knowledge and attitudes toward hospice and palliative medicine.

Knowledge and Awareness of Colorectal Cancer among Undergraduate Students at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: a Survey-Based Study

  • Background: This study explored the knowledge and awareness about colorectal cancer (CRC) among undergraduate students of one of the leading universities in Saudi Arabia, along with the mode of information access. Materials and Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted at the King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, among students of different faculties. The study questionnaire, containing 28 items, was adapted from surveys identified in the relevant literature. The CRC awareness questionnaire consisted of an awareness section (early CRC signs and symptoms, and risk factors) and a knowledge section. The data were analyzed using the SPSS version 21.0. Results: A total of 525 undergraduate students participated in the study. The majority were females (63.0%) and approximately half (56.8%) were medical students. The majority of the students (82.3%) were aware of CRC, and 68% thought that CRC is a preventable disease. Regarding colorectal cancer screening tests, only one-third of students (33%) had actual knowledge, while the majority of the students (77.0%) thought that there are tests which help in early detection. Only 4% of the participants had a family history of CRC. The majority of the participants (84%) thought that CRC is a disease that can be cured. Almost 50-60% participants had good awareness level regarding risk factors, and signs and symptoms. Regarding knowledge, participant responses varied for family history (52%), age (59%), chronic infection of the colon (72%), obesity and lack of exercise (66%). More than one-third of the students had received information material regarding CRC from their curriculum followed by social media (20.4%), and nearly 40% from other sources such as TV, hospital and mass media. Female participants had significantly better awareness in a few questions regarding CRC awareness as compared to their male counterparts. There was a significant difference observed between medical and non-medical students (p<0.001) in overall score of awareness and knowledge about CRC while no significant difference found in gender-wise comparison. Conclusions: Knowledge and awareness of students about CRC were not up to the mark. Medical students and female students had better knowledge in a few areas, but the overall situation is dismal.
