  • Objectives : This study developed and validated the local clinic Medical Doctor Role Stress Scale(MDRS). Methods : The interviews were conducted with 12 local clinic medical doctors to develop final preliminary questions. The scale was developed using statistical item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis surveys with local clinic medical doctors in Seoul, Busan, Daejeon, and Gyeonggi province. Results : The MDRS developed in this study consisted of 14 items and three factors. The factors were role conflict, role ambiguity and role overload. The three factors explained 56.71% of the total variance, and the internal consistency of this scale was .90. The internal consistency for each factor was .81 ~ .90. Confirmatory factor analysis through a separate sampling met the fit criteria (CFI = .941, TLI = .927, RMSEA = .079, SRMR = .069). Conclusions : The results indicate that this scale is a reliable instrument for assessing local clinic medical doctor role stress.

Methods: Data were collected via e-mail from 270 firefighters working at 119 safety centers and firehouses in the regions of Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Busan, and Gyeongsang-do between the $1^{st}$ and $30^{th}$ of July, 2017. Results: Regarding gender differences in job stress, women ($2.16{\pm}0.65$) showed statistically significant job stress compared to men ($1.93{\pm}0.57$). As for the results of the incident impact of event scale statistically significant differences were observed (p=.001), and ego-resilience in men ($4.15{\pm}0.54$) was significantly higher than that in women ($3.79{\pm}0.75$) (p=.006). Depending on the work period, there were statistically significant differences (p=.000) in job stress, ego-resilience (p=.002), and impact of event scale (p=.000). Conclusion: Since job stress, ego-resilience, and results of the impact of event scale were closely related to dispatch frequency and work period of the firefighters, detailed and continuous stress management programs that consider these factors need to be developed.

Conclusion: For medical students who are easily exposed to stress, the importance of psychological prevention measures and effectiveness of non-face-to-face counseling should be recognized. In the field of medical education, we must do our best to build a system that can be used immediately at the appropriate time for these programs.

  • Background: Low self-esteem can be an issue among health-care workers due to the hierarchical medical system. Health-care workers are also in a high pressure environment that can lead to stress and burnout. This study was conducted to estimate the proportion of health-care workers with low self-esteem, high stress, and burnout and the factors associated with these in a private hospital in Bangalore city. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a random sample of health-care workers of various cadres - doctors, nurses, nursing aides, technicians, and workers in ancillary departments such as laundry, dietary, central sterile supply department, and pharmacy, with probability proportional to size. Rosenberg Scale for Self-esteem, Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale, and Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure were used as study tools. Results: Among the 306 health-care workers, there were high levels of low self-esteem (48.4%), stress (38.6%), and burnout (48.7%), with the lowest levels being among doctors. Those aged younger than 30 years had significantly lower self-esteem and greater stress. Conclusions: Health-care workers with low self-esteem were nearly thrice more likely to suffer high stress, Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.84 (1.36-5.92), and those who were stressed had more than three times higher chance of experiencing burnout, OR = 3.6 (2.02-6.55). Path analysis showed that low self-esteem among health-care workers had a direct effect on burnout, as well as an indirect effect through stress (mediator variable). This study indicates the need for screening and counseling for low self-esteem, stress, and burnout as part of a periodic medical examination of all cadres of health workers.
