This study provides an evidence on the determinants of the profitability of university hospital by analyzing university hospital-level data set of hospital performance during the year 2007 (32 university hospitals in total). For the study, a multiple regression model is employed in which profitability index obtained from the DEA computations, operating margin to total asset and gross revenue are used as the dependent variables, and a number of hospital operating characteristics are chosen as the independent variables such as ownership type, location, bed size, period of establishment, bed occupancy rate, admission ratio of outpatients, patients per medical specialist, personnel cost per patient, liabilities to total assets, current ratio, fixed ratio, total asset turnover, medical assistance rate and public indicator. First, the results indicate that the bed occupancy rate and liabilities to total assets are positively and significantly associated with operating margin to total asset. Second, number of beds, the bed occupancy rate and number of patients per medical specialist are positively and significantly associated with operating margin to gross revenue. Third, the bed occupancy rate, number of patients per medical specialist, liabilities to total assets, total asset turnover are positively and significantly associated with profitability index revealed from DEA.

Being able to quickly locate valuable medical equipment is critical inside hospitals. In order to utilize limited budget and resources efficiently, accurate locating or tracking is required in many fields. In this research, we focus on how to find the location of missing assets by using RFID in real time indoors to track equipment. When equipment needs to be searched, the purpose of a RFID device is to minimize the time, investment cost and effort spent searching for the equipment. Thus, this research presents a mathematical model of using RFID (both handheld reader and stationary reader) for efficient asset location. We derive the expected time of locating RFID-tagged objects in a multi-area environment where hand-held RF readers are used. We then discuss where to deploy stationary RF readers in order to maximize the efficiency of the search process.

Recently, many enterprises have attempted to capitalize knowledge assets on data warehouse (DW). It has been recognized as strategic core process to create corporate competitive advantage and implement enterprise e-biz strategies. However, most approaches to represent knowledge and decision process have limits in considering various knowledge types, their relationships and continuity in knowledge formulation. In addition, they are so inclined to one side such as concept-oriented frameworks or technology-oriented ones. They lack universal and wide-ranging features. This paper presents a comprehensive methodology to accumulate knowledge capital on DW via a properly grained hypermedia model. The methodology consists of three phases: knowledge requirement elicitation, hypermedia modeling, and system implementation. A real-life case for medical DW development is presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology. This methodology is effective when an organization accumulates knowledge assets to put the corporate e-biz or cre-biz strategy into practice.
Financial ratio indicators of the 46 sample hospitals provided by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, together with the survey data responded by the 57 sample hospitals, were analysed to identify the characteristics of the red-figured hospitals' financial structure, financial operational efficiency and management decision-making behavior, The financial characteristics identified through the analysis include high dependency to liabilities, high salary expenses and overhead costs, low profitability of the unduly large amount of fixed assets, and low managerial efficieny of inventory. The hospitals, in face of the IMF economic impasse, took the necessary decision-making and counter measures to cut down salary expenses, to increase the number of patient and medical revenue, and to reduce investment to fixed assets. Based on these findings this study suggested that the hospitals should take more active cost containment measures, financial structural reorganization, and developoment of the strategies that can contribute to increase of the number of patient and medical revenue and that do not. require much capital funds.
Objectives: This study investigated the financial performance of Korean Medicine hospitals in Korea in order to understand the current status of hospital management and improve its efficiency. Methods: Financial statements of 24 medical corporations, 19 juridical foundations and 18 school hospitals from 2016 to 2018 were obtained from the secondary data published by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the National Tax Service and the Korea Advancing Schools Foundation. Financial performance was measured on 6 dimensions: liquidity, profitability, activity, growth, cost and productivity (investment efficiency) by analyzing 8 financial indicators: Liability to Total Assets, Net Profit to Patient Service Revenues, Total Assets Turnover, Growth Rate of Patient Service Revenues, Operating Expenses to Patient Service Revenues, Value Added to Patient Service Revenues, Value Added to Total Assets, and Value Added to Personnel Expenses. Results: Korean Medicine hospitals showed lower Liability to Total Assets, Liquidity and Value Added to Total Assets than Western Medicine hospitals did. They also showed higher Value Added to Patient Service Revenues and Value Added to Personnel Expenses than Western Medicine hospitals did. They also showed higher Value Added to Patient Service Revenues and Value Added to Personnel Expenses than those of Western Medicine hospitals do. The net profit decreased significantly (-50.8%) in 2018 whereas Patient Service Revenues increased (6.9%) for the same period due to Operating Expenses increase and Non-Operating loss. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the Korean Medicine hospital sector in Korea needs to improve liquidity and financial structure and to enhance profitability by reducing Personnel Expenses and generating Non-operating revenues in order to improve its investment efficiency and competitiveness.
This study tried to analyze about the investment effects on the spent capital and possessed tangible assets of some hospitals during their hospital management. For this analysis purpose, this study used the financial data of 100 hospitals which presented their financial statements to an finance-information company from 2004 to 2006. The analysis was done with PEFR(Percentage of External Funds Required) and Tangible Asset. The FEPR considered the retained interior fund relating to the investment types in the hospital industry. And the Tangible Asset was related to the possession condition of facilities and equipment. The EBIT rate(Earnings before interest and tax to sales) meaning the management performance and tangible asset turnover were used as the measured variables of investment effect. As the result of data analysis, it was identified that the tangible asset like the hospitals's facilities and equipment was not an agent significantly to influence on the management performance(EBIT rate), the eventual goal of hospital management. But, it was identified that there was some differences tangible asset turnover according to each hospital's main characteristics. And at targeting the all sample hospitals, it was found that the management performance(EBIT rate) had some significant effect on the retained earnings rate, a part of source of PEFR.
This study analyzed how risk factors in management affect the management of working capital in general hospitals in Korea. The data used accounting information for three years (2016~2017 and 2018) of 271 general hospitals using the medical institution accounting information disclosure system. The independent variables were the working capital level and the cash conversion cycle, The dependent variables were operational risk and market risk, Control variables were selected as components of working capital(cash, accounts receivable, inventory assets, accounts payable). According to the study, the lower the operational risk, the higher the level of working capital hospitals in Korea. Working capital decisions were confirmed to be attributable to operating risks, cash, inventory assets and accounts payable. And the lower the market risk (Operating Margin), the higher the cash conversion cycle. Therefore, it is necessary to review appropriate management measures of operational risks, cash, inventory assets and accounts payable identified as operating capital determinants so that medical institutions can also have economic response capabilities in consideration of the specificity of their operations.
The public medical centers are required to make efficient and profitable operation. The efficiency is usually measured by DEA(data envelopment analysis), and profitability is measured by medical income rate. But DEA is measured by relative, not absolute value. So, profitability rate is used alternatively for DEA. This study want to analyze the interchangeability between DEA ranking and medical income rate ranking among public medical centers. The return on total assets is same ranking with DEA on bed number, employee number and total asset, but 60-70% relationship with DEA on bed number and employee number, as input resources. The operating margin is similar ranking with DEA on bed number and employee number, but 50-60% relationship with DEA on bed number, employee number and total asset, as input resources.

This study, based on a health belief model, examines how baby boomers perceive health and how they are financially preparing for future medical expenses. In addition, the study analyzes which factors influence baby boomers' preparation behaviors for future medical expenses and their perceived sufficiency of the preparation for medical expenses. Through such activities, this study examines baby boomers' current preparation status for future medical expenses, and based on this outcome, will turn the attention of individuals and society toward becoming more concerned with health and increasing health expectancy. For this study, an online survey was conducted targeted at men and women who were born between 1955 and 1963 and live nationwide, and its resultant data were collected. After conducting a 15-day survey in November 2011, a total of 418 questionnaire responses were used for the final analysis. The major findings of this study and their implications are as follows: First, baby boomers' health beliefs and their perceptions of health identified by subjective health conditions were very positive. Second, while there were some partial differences in the influencing factors, health beliefs and perceived health influenced the sufficiency of future medical expenses in the three groups, which were segmented according to how they prepare for future medical expenses-insurance-based, pension-based, and insufficiently prepared groups. Third, the baby boomers selected the national health insurance as the primary means of preparing for post-retirement medical expenses, and backed it up with private health insurance or the national pension. In addition, when baby boomers' perceived sufficiency of future medical expenses were examined, 57.6% of the respondents expressed that their old-age medical expenses were not sufficient. Fourth, in terms of baby boomers' preparation behaviors for future medical expenses, it was revealed that as one recognizes old-age health more seriously, he/she has a higher chance of using insurance and lower chance of using a pension to prepare for medical expenses. Fifth, regarding baby boomers' sufficiency of preparations for future medical expenses, economic factors such as total assets, the sufficiency of retirement assets, and the number of insurance policies, as well as health perceptions, including health beliefs and subjective health conditions, were important influencing factors.
