This study attempted to verify the effect of the anthropomorphism, message type, and media self-efficacy level on purchase intention. The experimental design of this study was a 2 (anthropomorphism level of shopping chatbot: low vs. high) × 2 (message type: factual vs. evaluative) × 2 (media self-efficacy: low vs. high) three-way mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA). This study conducted a survey by the convenience sampling method of 402 women in their 20s and 30s living in Seoul and the Gyeonggi area who were aware of chatbot services. For the final analysis, 388 questionnaires were used. Data were analyzed with the SPSS 23 program and three-way ANOVA. Simple main effects analysis was conducted. The results of this study were as follows. First, there were statistically significant differences in purchase intention according to anthropomorphism level, message type, and media self-efficacy. Second, message type and media self-efficacy showed statistically significant interaction effects on purchase intention. Lastly, anthropomorphism and the media self-efficacy level and the message type of the shopping chatbots showed significant three-way interaction effects on purchase intention.

  • Examination of the concurrent evolution of communication tools and eating behaviors over recent decades reveals that social media and other forms of digital content have become powerful new driving forces for nutritional choices and food consumption. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect between goal orientation of message (promotion versus prevention) and the type of message (text versus image) on effectiveness of the message. The findings showed that individuals exposed to a promotion-focused message similarly responded to the message regardless of the type of the message. By contrast, those who exposed to a prevention-focused message showed significantly more positive responses to the message posted on the text-based social media than the message on the image-based social media. The findings indicated that, if presented effectively, social media could be harnessed to promote healthier eating habits and behaviors, prevent those which can be harmful, and ultimately improve an individual's daily food consumption and overall quality of life.

  • Both message appeals and individual characteristics can influence the effectiveness of sustainable product promotions. Applying the agency-communion orientation to the advertising message research context, this study examined the interplay between message appeals and agency-communication orientations in impacting purchase intentions. The findings from a 2 (message appeal: self-interest vs. public-interest message) × 2 (motivational orientation: agency vs. communion) experiment revealed a communion-over-agency effect on consumer purchasing decisions for public-interest message appeals. In the self-interest message condition, we found no statistically significant difference in impact between agency and communion on purchase intentions. In short, we contribute to advertising effectiveness research by showing that agency-communion orientations moderate the effect of message appeals. We also explain the practical implications of these findings for effective sustainable communication in advertisements based on individuals' motivational orientations.
