  • This paper presents the materials analysis for combination of working modes of Magnetorheological (MR) damper. The materials were selected based on the optimum magnetic field strength at the effective areas in order to obtain a better design of MR damper. The design of electromagnetic circuit is one of the critical criteria in designing MR dampers besides the working mechanism and the types of MR damper. The increase in the magnetic field strength is an indication of the improvement in the damping performance of the MR damper. Eventually, the experimental test was performed under quasi-static loading to observe the performances of MR damper in shear mode, squeeze mode and mixed mode. The results showed that the increment of forces was obtained with the increased current due to higher magnetic flux density generated by electromagnetic coils. In general, it can be summarized that the combination of modes generates higher forces than single mode for the same experimental parameters throughout the study.

  • A one-dimensional heat conduction problem in cylindrical coordinate system was solved using Crank-Nicolson finite difference method to predicting the temperature distribution in rice storage bin with wall insulator. The model can simulate the grain temperatures in insulated round bins using the input data of initial grain temperature. ambient air temperature, wind velocity, solar radiation on a horizontal surface, and thermal properties of grain, bin wall, wall insulator, insulator cover, and air. Temperatures were collected at the bin center, 0.65m in radial direction from the center, and near the bin wall in 2.7m diameter bin filled with rough rice to depth of 3.0m were used to validate the simulation model. Grain temperatures predicted by the model were in very good agreement with the measured temperatures. The residual mean square error between measured and predicted grain temperatures at the bin center was $1.38^{\circ}C$.

  • Vibration response in a sandwich plate with a nanocompiste core covered by magnetic layer is presented. The core is armed by functionalyy graded-carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs) where the Mori-Tanaka law is utilized assuming agglomeration effects. The structure plate is located on elastic medium simulated by Pasternak model. The governing equations are derived based on Mindlin theory and Hamilton's principle. Utilizing diffrential quadrature method (DQM), the frequency of the structure is calculated and the effects of magnetic layer, volume percent and agglomeration of CNTs, elastic medium and geometrical parameters of structure are shown on the frequency of system. Results indicate that with considering magnetic layer, the frequency of structure is increased.

  • The chestnut is a well-blown and important forest product in Korea. The annual production of chestnut is about 95,000 tons and its cultivating area is 80,000 ha. However, the peeling process of outer and inner skins of chestnut is very difficult due to hardness and adhesiveness of chestnut skin. The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model for flame peeling characteristics of domestic chestnuts, and to evaluate an optimization model to determine the operation conditions of the chestnut flame peeling system. The results of this study were summarized as follows. It was found that the flame peeling characteristics of domestic chestnuts were by the flame temperature, and the flame time. The peeling ratio and the heating depth were increased as the flame temperature and the flame time were increased. The peeling ratio and the heating depth were increased linearly when those were less than 85 % and 2 mm respectively. As the hardness of chestnut shell was decreased, the peeling ratio was increased. A simulation model was developed to predict the peeling ratio and the heating depth based on the hardness of the chestnut shell, the flame temperature, and the flame time of the peeling system. The model was evaluated by comparing the measurement and the prediction of the peeling ratios and heating depths, and showed the good relationship.

  • In this work, the dynamic characteristics of an oil-lubricated, short SFD with a central feeding groove are derived based on a theoretical analysis considering the effect of a groove. The validity of the analysis is investigated experimentally using an Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) system as an exciter. For the theoretical solution, the fluid film forces of a grooved SFD are analytically derived so that the dynamic coefficients of a SFD are expressed in terms of its design parameters. For the experimental validation of the analysis, a test rig using AMB as an exciter is proposed to identify the dynamic characteristics of a short SFD with a central groove. As an exciter, the AMB represents a mechatronic device to levitate and position the test journal without any mechanical contact, to generate relative motions of the journal inside the tested SFD and to measure the generated displacements during experiments with fairly high accuracy. Using this test rig, experiments are extensively conducted with different clearance, which is one of the most important design parameters, in order to investigate its effect on the dynamic characteristics and the performance of SFDs. Damping and inertia coefficients of the SFD that are experimentally identified are compared with the analytical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the analysis. It is also shown that AMB is an ideal device for tests of SFDs.

  • Electric drive technology is continually advanced to improve fuel efficiency in the automobile industry. It could improve the fuel efficiency of automobiles by 50% as well as agricultural machinery. The purpose of this study was to measure and analyze the power and current of an electric transplanter based on the planting distances during field operations. The electric transplanter was constructed by mounting the major components of a motor drive system onto a transplanter. The electric transplanter had a 3 kW motor power, and the major components included an inverter, battery, and a battery management system (BMS). The field tests were conducted by travelling at two speeds (300 and 760 mm/s) and by planting at three distances (260, 420 and 630 mm) with the working speed (300 mm/s), during travelling and transplanting. The results showed that the required power increased when the travelling speed was fast. One-way ANOVA for the planting distance and Duncan's multiple range test at a significance level of 0.05 were used to analyze the motor power using statistical analysis software. In addition, the required power increased when the planting distances were short at every working condition. The results of this study would provide useful information for the development an electric transplanter.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the emissions of SOx and NH3 for a 78 kW class agricultural tractor during agricultural operations. A real-time monitoring system was constructed for measuring the load data. The field test was conducted during plow and rotary tillage. The working conditions were selected with the transmission gears in M3 Low and M2 High for the plow tillage and L3 High and L3 Low for the rotary tillage. The engine torque and fuel consumption were measured using controller area network (CAN) communication, and the emissions of SOx and NH3 were calculated based on the fuel consumption. As a result of the field tests, the engine torque was higher for the plow tillage than for the rotary tillage. As the gear stage was increased, the engine torque became higher. The emissions of SOx and NH3 were higher for the plow tillage than for the rotary tillage because the fuel consumption increased. Moreover, the emissions of SOx and NH3 tended to be more distributed for the rotary tillage than for the plow tillage. To develop an emission factor for agricultural machinery, it is important to measure reliable emission data during agricultural operations. In a future study, we will collect various emission data using a portable emission measurement system during agricultural operations.

  • Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of joint angle errors mainly due to skin artifact and measurement errors during gait analysis. Joint angle errors lead to unreliable kinematics and kinetic analyses in the investigation of human motion. The purpose of this paper is to present the Joint Averaging Coordinate System (JACS) method for human gait analysis. The JACS method is based on the concept of statistical data reduction of anatomically referenced marker data. Since markers are not attached to rigid bodies, different marker combinations lead to slightly different predictions of joint angles. These different combinations can be averaged in order to provide a "best" estimate of joint angle. Results of a gait analysis are presented using clinically meaningful terminology to provide better communication with clinical personal. In order to verify the developed JACS method, a simple three-dimensional knee joint contact model was developed, employing an absolute coordinate system without using any kinematics constraint in which thigh and shank segments can be derived independently. In the experimental data recovery, the separation and penetration distance of the knee joint is supposed to be zero during one gait cycle if there are no errors in the experimental data. Using the JACS method, the separation and penetration error was reduced compared to well-developed existing methods such as ACRS and Spoor & Veldpaus method. The separation and penetration distance ranged up to 15 mm and 12 mm using the Spoor & Veldpaus and ACRS method, respectively, compared to 9 mm using JACS method. Statistical methods like the JACS can be applied in conjunction with existing techniques that reduce systematic errors in marker location, leading to an improved assessment of human gait.
