  • Recently, mobile phones have become necessary tools for everyday life. In this study, a device that can serve as a separation between a touch panel and an LCD module in a mobile phone was devised for mass repair processes at a smaill business. We used a wire cutting method to separate the bonding plate area between the modules. The device is composed of DC motors and stepping motors that can deliver a precise cutting motion. The motor control system is connected by individual control modules to a CAN network. The developed device showed excellent performance at high temperature conditions.

  • For the improvement of the pump characteristics in the partial capacity range, it must be verified that the influence of the impeller design factor on the internal flows and the influence of the impeller internal flows on the pump characteristics. In this paper, in order to understand the influence of inlet angles on flow conditions and characteristics of a mixed flow pump, experiments were carried out for three kinds of impeller, which have the same outlet angle distributions and meridional section shapes. Results show that separation and stall in the partial capacity range can be controlled by the inlet angles. The relationship between the separation - stall at the impeller leading edge and the discharge flow conditions is clarified.

  • Transient solution of asymmetric mechanical and thermal stresses for hollow cylinders made of functionally graded material is presented. Temperature distribution, as function of radial and circumferential directions and time, is analytically obtained, using the method of separation of variables and generalized Bessel function. A direct method is used to solve the Navier equations, using the Euler equation and complex Fourier series.

  • Flow patterns and dynamic properties of two-stage Weis-Fogh type ship propulsion mechanism are studied by a discrete vortex method. To study mutual interference between two wings, two cases are con sidered - wing motions with the same and reverse phases. The predicted flow patterns correspond to the available flow visualization results. Time histories of thrust and drag coefficients are also calculated, and the interference between the two wings are numerically clarified.

  • A comparison is made of the heat loss from a hollow cylinder, computed using an one-dimensional analytic method and a two-dimensional separation of variables scheme. For a two-dimensional analysis, the temperature of the inner surface as a boundary condition can be varied along the length of the cylinder by varing the temperature variation factor, b. Comparisons of the heat loss from the hollow cylinder using these two methods are given as a function of non-dimensional cylinder length, the ratio of the outer radius to the inner radius, temperature variation factor and Biot number. The result shows that the value of the heat loss from the hollow cylinder obtained using the one-dimensional analytic method becomes close to the value given by the two-dimensional separation of variables scheme as the value of Biot number and the non-dimensional hollow cylinder length increase and as the ratio of the outer radius to the inner radius decreases.

  • Water hammering in nuclear or thermal power plant condenser cooling water systems in mathematically modeled and numerically analyzed based on the method of characteristics. Effects of variations of the discharge valve operating condition and the system geometry on the hydraulic transients are investigated for the cases when all or one of four pumps are tripped accidently due to loss of offisite power. Effects of ocean waves and tides on the steady-state and the transient operations are also studied. Water column separation in taken into account whenever necessary by means of a simplified physical model.

  • A global-local finite element modeling technique is employed in this paper to predict the fatigue life of radial truck tires. This paper assumes that a flaw exists inside the tire, in the local model. The local model uses an FEM fracture analysis in conjunction with a global-local technique in ABAQUS. A 3D finite element local model calculates the energy release rate at the belt edge. Using the analysis of the local model, a study of the energy release rate is performed in the crack region and used to determine the crack growth rate analysis. The result considers how different driving conditions contribute to the detrimental effects of belt separation in truck tire failure. The calculation of the total mileage on four sizes of radial truck tires has performed on the belt edge separation. The effect of the change of belt width design on the fatigue lifetime of tire belt separation is discussed.

  • It's possible for a human to breathe under water, if dissolved oxygen is effectively used. Fish can stay under water using the gill which extracts dissolved oxygen from water. Water includes small amounts of oxygen, so a human needs larger amounts of water to acquire oxygen enough for underwater breathing. The exhalation gas from a human is another method to get higher amounts of oxygen under water. It mainly composes of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. So, if only carbon dioxide is decreased, the exhalation gas has good characteristics for breathing of a human under water. In this paper, composition of the exhalation gas from a human was analyzed using GC. Based on these results, the synthesized gas was prepared and mixed into water which was used for experimental devices to analyze separation characteristics of dissolved gases from water. Experimental devices included a water pump, a hollow fiber membrane module and a vacuum pump. The effects of pressure and water flow on separation characteristics of synthesized gas were investigated. The compositions of gases separated from water using synthesized gas were investigated using GC. These results expect to be applied to the development of underwater breathing technology for a human.

  • An experimental study was carried out to control a shock-induced boundary layer separation by utilizing the supersonic sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator. High-speed schlieren, surface flow visualization, wall pressure measurement and precise Pitot tube measurement were applied to observe the influences of the location and the supply pressure of the fluidic oscillator on the characteristics of the oblique-shock-induced boundary layer separation. The characteristics of the separation control by the present supersonic fluidic oscillator was quantitatively analyzed by comparing with a conventional control method utilizing an air-jet vortex generator.

  • The effect of the electromagnetic force (or Lorentz force) on the flow behavior around a circular cylinder is investigated by computation. Two-dimensional unsteady flow computation for Re=10$^2$is carried out using a numerical method of finite difference approximation in a curvilinear body-fitted coordinate system by solving the momentum equations including the Lorentz force as a body force. The effect of spatial variations of the Lorentz forcing region and forcing direction along the cylinder circumference is investigated. The numerical results show that the Lorentz force can effectively suppress the flow separation and oscillation of the lift force of circular cylinder cross-flow, leading to reduction of drag.
