A Study on the Grinding Characteristics of Stainless Steel Using Intermittent Grinding Wheel (단속 연삭지석에 의한 스테인레스강의 연삭특성에 관한 연구)

  • In the grinding of difficult-to-materials, the major problmes of conventional grinding are grinding burn, wheel wear, grinding surface crack, loading and glazing, When a conventioanl grinding wheel is used, wheel wear and grinding surface crack easily occur in low heat conductive material and annealed steel. Intermittent grinding is suitable for diffcult-to-matrical such as stainless steel, titanium alloy, aluminum alloy and copper alloy. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new type intermittent wheel of the grinding system for improving the problem of stainless steel grinding, to observe the effect of intermittent grinding on surface quality and grinding characteristics of stainless steel grinding using intermittent grinding wheel. The characteristics of intermittent grinding system improve surface quality, low grinding temperature and low loading.

  • A degree of sharpness in wheel grains affects the surface roughness and dimensional accuracy in the grinding process. If a wheel with dull grains is used, the grinding force is increased and the surface roughness is deteriorated. In ovder to produce a precision component economically, the magnitude of the wear amount in the grinding wheel has to be limited. In this study, experimental evaluation of a wheel life varying with the grinding ratio and static grinding force was conducted. The grinding ratio and grinding force were measured to seek the grinding performance of the WA wheel. The relationship between the grinding ratio and static grinding force was presented.

  • In the surface grinding operations, the grinding fluid cannot be supplied sufficiently in the cutting zone. Temperature generated in the cutting zone increases rapidly and causes thermal damage such as burning on the surface of a workpiece. To reduce thermal damage, the intermittent grinding wheels, which have an excellent cooling effect, have been applied. This paper describes machining characteristics by using intermittent grinding wheels. The grinding force of the intermittent wheels has been simulated by the SIMULAB, which is a program for simulating dynamic systems. Using the intermittent grinding wheels, the characteristics of grinding force, temperature, surface roughness, and geometric error have been evaluated experimently.

Modeling of the Centerless Through-feed Grinding Process

  • A computer simulation method for investigating the form generation mechanism in the centerless through-feed grinding process is described. The length of the contact line and the magnitude of the grinding force between the grinding wheel and workpieces, vary with the change in the axial location of the current workpiece during grinding. Thus, a new coordinate system and a grinding force curve of previous and/or following workpieces are introduced to treat the axial motion. Experiments and computer simulations were carried out using four types of cylindrical workpiece shapes. To validate this model, simulation results are compared with the experimental results.

  • In this study, to diagnose the grinding state of a micro drill bit, a sensor attachment location was selected through random vibration analysis of the grinding unit of the micro drill-bit grinding system. In addition, the vibration data generated during the drill bit grinding were collected from the grinding unit for the grinding wheels under the steady and worn conditions, and data feature extraction and dimension reduction were performed. The wear of the micro-drill-bit grinding wheel was diagnosed by applying KNN, a machine-learning algorithm. The classification model showed excellent performance, with an accuracy of 99.2%. The precision, recall and f1-score were higher than 99% in both the steady and wear conditions.

  • Mordern industrial society pursues unmanned system and automation of manufacturing process. Abreast with this tendensy, production of goods which requires advanced accuracy is increasing as well. According to this, the work sensing time of dressing by monitoring and diagnosing the condition of grinding, which is th representative way in accurate manufacturing, is an important work to prevent serious damages which affect grinding process or products by wearing grinding wheel. Computer vision system was composed, so that grinding wheel surface was acquired by CCD camera and the change of cutting edge ratio was measured. Then we used automatic thresholding technique from histogram as a way of dividing grinding cutting edge from grinding surface. As a result, we are trying to approach unmanned system and automation by deciding more accurate time of dressing and by visualizing behavior of grinding wheel by making use of computer vision.

  • Conventionally, grinding of stainless steel, aluminium ally, copper alloy, and titanum alloy are difficult to obtain the high quality finish, because they have the mechanical properties such as low hardness, high toughness which result in the loading of wheel and the poor surface finish. Inorder to perform the grinding operations for these sorts of materials easily, the discontinuous grinding wheel with multi-porous grooves has newly been developed. The multi-porous grooves were formed during wheel production. This discontinous grinding wheel increases the grinding performance. It is desirable to use the discontinuous grinding wheel when grinding materials wiht high efficiency and accuracy which is impossible by conventional wheels. In this paper, the constructing and manufacturing method of grinding wheel with multi-proous grooves are explained, and the grinding charateristics of discontinuous grinding wheel are also illustrate.

  • Cylindrical plunge grinding is widely used for final machining process of precision parts such as automobile, aircraft, measurement units. But in order to make parts which have high precision accuracy and high surface integrity, it is necessary to consider grinding characteristics due to accumulation phenomena of grinding wheel in plunge grinding process. In this study, in order to examine closely plunge grinding process, grinding power, grinding force, real depth of cut are monitored in transient state, steady state and spark out state. As the result, it is shown that grinding power and force are affected by dressing condition, depth of cut and speed ratio and that there exist threshold grinding force and it also affected by dressing condition.   • This paper explains problems of force-reflecting teleoperation grinding work and proposes some methods to solve those. For stable contact between robot tool(grindstone) and contact surface the mechanical impedance force control is used. The sliding phenomenon of grindstone has been appeared at the contact surface during the grinding work. The sliding problems caused by friction and rotation of grindstone are eliminated by using tangential direction sliding compensation control. The rotation force of grindstone makes the tool move to tangential direction along the surface suddenly even though an operator pushes the tool only in normal direction to the surface. Normal direction force control is applied for grinder not to roll and fracture on the grinding surface. Vibration problem of grindstone is decreased by second order low-pass filter. Therefore we can precise grinding work at the grinding surface and feel the reality

A Study on Enhancement of Grinding Accuracy by an Active Tool Control

  • An approach to enhance dimensional accuracy of the grinding process has been presented, and grinding of a glass material with a metal-bonded diamond wheel has been studied. In this study, a grinding tool is suspended flexibly and controlled by an electromagnetic actuator. During grinding, profile error of a ground surface is indirectly measured and fed back to a control system. A model of grinding error has been suggested on which the indirect measurement has been based. An optimal PID control is adopted and effectiveness of the in-process feedback control has been verified experimentally.
