Nonlinear behavior analysis was used to verify whether a one-way clutch is effective for reducing the torsional vibration of a paired spur gear system under periodic excitation. The dynamic responses were studied over a wide frequency range by speed sweeping to check the nonlinear behavior using numerical integration. The gear system with a one-way clutch showed typical nonlinear behavior. The oscillating component of the dynamic transmission error was reduced over the entire frequency range compared to a system without a one-way clutch. The one-way clutch also eliminated unsteady continuous jump phenomena over multiple solution bands, and prevented double-side contact, even with very small backlash. Installing a one-way clutch on both sides of the gear system was more effective at mitigating the negative effects of external periodic excitation and various parameter changes than a conventional gear system without a one-way clutch.
SRM has been applied to many commercial applications that require economical advantages and high performance abilities. But it has some drawbacks such as acoustic noise due to the abrupt change of mmf level when commutation. The abrupt change of a phase excitation produces mechanical stresses and it results in torque ripple and noise. This paper deals with an analysis of vibration and noise in SRM drive. Several types of excitation method are taken into account. The 1-phase and 2-phase excitation technique of short-pitch winding 2-phase excitation technique of full-pitch winding are tested. The acoustic noise is reduced remarkably through the sequential phase excitation in the 2-phase excitation. It is because that the scheme reduces abrupt change of excitation level by distributed balanced excitation with free-wheeling during commutation.
A new concept sea-floating port called mobile harbor has been introduced, in order to resolve the limitation of current above-ground port facilities against the continuous growth of worldwide marine transportation. One of important subjects in the design of a mobile harbor is to secure the dynamic stability against wave-induced excitation, because a relatively large-scale heavy crane system installed at the top of mobile harbor should load/unload containers at sea under the sea state up to level 3. In this context, this paper addresses a two-step sequential analytical-numerical method for analyzing the structural dynamic response of the mobile harbor crane system to the wave-induced rolling excitation. The rigid ship motion of mobile harbor by wave is analytically solved, and the flexible dynamic response of the crane system by the rigid ship motion is analyzed by the finite element method. The hydrodynamic effect between sea water and mobile harbor is reflected by means of the added moment of inertia.
In this paper, the equivalent exciting force caused by electric excitation is derived. By dividing load and displacement vectors into mean values and time-varying ones, the dynamic equations of the system are transformed into linear ones for time-varying portion of the displacements. The analytical equations of the forced time responses of the drive system to electric excitations are obtained. Using the Laplace transformation, the transfer function of the drive system is obtained. These equations are used to analyze the time and frequency responses of the drive system to the electric excitation. It is known that electric excitation can cause forced responses of the drive system, the total dynamic responses are decided by three phase exciting voltages, exciting frequency and natural frequencies of the drive system, and the drive parameters have obvious influence on the time and frequency responses.
Experimental study is conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics for the flow over backward-facing step and cavities. A naphthalene sublimation method has been employed to measure the mass transfer coefficients on the duct wall and LDV system has been used to obtain mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities. Reynolds number based on the step height and free stream velocity is 20,000 and St numbers of acoustic excitations given to separated flow are 0.2 to 0.4. The spectra of streamwise velocity fluctuation show a sharp peak forcing frequency for an acoustically excited flow. The results reveal that the vortex pairing and overall turbulence level are enhanced by the acoustic excitation and a significant decrease in the reattachment length and the increased turbulence intensity are observed with the excitation. A certain acoustic excitation increases considerably the heat/mass transfer coefficient at the reattachment point and in the recirculation region. For the cavities, heat/mass transfer is enhanced by the acoustic excitation due to the elevated turbulence intensity. For the 10H cavity, the flow pattern is significantly changed with the acoustic excitation. However, for the 5H cavity, the acoustic excitation has little effect on the flow pattern in the cavity.
In this study, a new damage identification method for beam-like structures with a fatigue crack is proposed. which does not require comparative measurement on an intact structure but require several measurements at different level of excitation forces on the cracked structure. The idea comes from the fact that dynamic behavior of a structure with a fatigue crack changes with the level of the excitation force. The 2$^{nd}$ spatial derivatives of frequency response functions along the longitudinal direction of a beam are used as the sensitive indicator of crack existence. Then, weighting function is employed in the averaging process in frequency domain to account for the modal participation of the differences between the dynamic behavior of a beam with a fatigue crack at the low excitation and one at the high excitation. Subsequently, a damage index is defined such that the location and level of the crack may be identified. It is shown from the analysis of vibration measurements in this study that comparison of frequency response characteristics of a beam with a single fatigue crack at different level of excitation forces enables an effective detection of the crack.
This paper presents an investigation on $C_2$, CH, OH radicals and NOx emissions in partially premixed flames with acoustic excitation. The radicals are visualized by the digital image technique with optical filters and ICCD camera while NOx emissions are determined by a chemiluminescent detection(NOx analyser). The measurements are made in flames with an overall equivalence ratio (${\phi}_o$) 0.5 and a center tube equivalence ratio(${\phi}_c$) varing from 1.1 to 5.0 for a constant fuel flow rate. In the case of excitation, the visual shape of the flame is changed from laminar to turbulent-like flames. Images of $C_2$, CH, and OH radicals resemble those of the flame appearances as the excitation phase is varied, and the radicals generated at the upstream are convected toward the downstream. It is inferred that the flame characteristics is affected by the flow characteristics of air-fuel mixture. In the case of acoustic excitation, OH radicals are much increased relative to unexcitation. From the radicals and flame visualization under acoustic excitation, the reduction of flame length affects the shorter residence time of center tube mixture, and significantly influences the NOx reduction.
The development of the low power application such as wireless sensors and health monitoring systems, attract a great attention to low power vibration energy harvesters. The recent vibration energy harvesters use smart materials in their structures to convert ambient mechanical energy into electricity. The frequent model of this harvesters is cantilevered beam. In the literature, the base excitation cantilevered harvesters are mainly investigated, and the related models are presented. This paper investigates a tip excitation cantilevered beam energy harvester with permendur. In the first section, the mechanical model of the harvester and magneto-mechanical model of the permendur are presented. Later, to find the maximum output of the harvester, based on the response surface method (RSM), some experiments are done, and the results are analyzed. Finally, to verify the results of RSM, a harvester with optimum design variables is made, and its output power is compared. The last comparison verifies the estimation of the RSM method which was about $381{\mu}W/cm^3$.
Flame oscillation phenomena in a co-flow diffusion flame was experimentally studied with periodic fuel supply using a solenoid valve. The degree of excitation was controlled by changing the volume flux of fuel passing through the valve. Flame oscillation frequencies were measured utilizing a photodiode, a spectrum analyzer, video and high speed movies. Laser planar visualization was employed to study the correlation between the flame oscillation and the toroidal vortices. Observed are three regimes of flame oscillation, where the oscillation frequencies are for the multiples of excitation, the excitation itself and the flame natural oscillation. Both periods of natural oscillation and of excitation induced oscillation exist over one cycle of the excitation in the frequency multiplied regime. It is considered as an effect of balancing the influence of buoyancy driven vortex with that of excitation induced vortex near the excitation rate of 0.2. Flame shapes are become monotonous as increasing the excitation frequency to the range of over two fold of the natural oscillation. The flame oscillation can be modulated to the frequency of either multiples of excitation or excitation itself under certain conditions. This implies that the flame oscillation could be modulated to avoid the resonance frequency of the combustor, and shows the possibility of active control of the flame oscillation.
Damage detection based on dynamic characteristics of a structure is one of important roles in structural damage identification. It is difficult to detect local structural damage using traditional dynamic experimental methods due to a limited number of sensors used in an experiment. In this work, a non-contact test stand of fan blades is established, and a full-field noncontact test method, combined with three-dimensional digital image correlation, Bayesian operational modal analysis, and damage indices, is used to detect local damage of a fan blade under ambient excitation without use of baseline information before structural damage. The methodology is applied to detect invisible local damage on the fan blade. Such a method has a seemingly high potential as an alternative to detect local damage of blades with complex high-precision surfaces under extreme working conditions because it is a noncontact test method and can be used under ambient excitation without human participation.
