Fatigue and Robust Analysis for Improving the Suspended Pedal of Vehicles (차량용 서스펜디드 페달 구조체의 피로 내구 분석 및 설계 개선)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate structural stability of the suspended plastic pedal used in vehicles and to predict its fatigue life with the results obtained from finite element analysis. And also shape optimization was performed to reduce its weight. Structural analysis of the suspended plastic pedal was based on the evaluation tests such as static test, stiffness test, and fatigue test in the actual field, which were frequently carried out in the companies manufacturing plastic pedals. The evaluation for the plastic pedal was carried out by structural and fatigue analyses using a commercial FEA program and according to it, maximum stress and strain and fatigue life of the pedal satisfied all the requirements in the evaluation tests. The results of structural analysis of the suspended plastic pedal were used in the fatigue analysis. Fatigue test was performed to verify validity of the theoretical fatigue life of the plastic pedal. And the life by theoretical calculation was in good agreement with that by the experiment. Object function for optimizing shape of the plastic pedal is its volume, and total volume of the plastic pedal was reduced to about 11.7% through shape optimization.

Evaluation of Dispersion Stability and Absorption Performance Enhancement of Binary Nanoemulsion Fluids (이성분 나노에멀전 유체의 분산안정성 및 흡수성능 촉진실험)

  • This paper aims to examine the effect of nanodroplets on pool-type absorption heat transfer enhancement and to find the relationship between the dispersion stability and the absorption performance. The concentrations of oil and surfactant are considered as the key parameters. $C_{12}E_4$ and Tween20 are used as the surfactants and N-decane oil is added to the $NH_3/H_2O$ solution to make the binary nanoemulsion fluids. Binary nanoemulsion fluids are dispersed by the ultrasonic vibrator and the stirrer under specific conditions. The dispersion stability of binary nanoemulsion fluids for each oil concentrations is evaluated from the droplet size and Tyndall effect analysis. The absorption performance of binary nanoemulsion fluids is compared with the result of dispersion stability. In addition, it is found that the binary nanoemulsion fluid is a strong candidate as a new working fluid for absorption applications.

  • Reduced Activation Ferritic/Martenstic (RAFs) are leading candidates for structural materials of D-T fusion reactor. One of The RAFs, JLF-1 (9Cr-2W-V, Ta) has been developed and proved to have good resistance against high-fluency neutrino irradiation and good phase stability. Recently, in order to clarify the strengthening mechanical at high temperature, a new scheme to improve high temperature mechanical properties is desired. Therefore, the creep properties and creep life prediction by Larson-Miller Parameter method for JLF-1 to be used for fusion reactor materials or other high temperature components were presented at the elevated temperatures of $500^{\circ}C$, $550^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ and $704^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed experimentally and quantitatively that a creep life predictive e벼ation at such various high temperatures was well derived by LMP.

The Effects of Mechanical Horseback Riding Exercise on the Dynamic Balance in Patients with Cerebral Infarction (승마기구 운동이 뇌경색 환자의 동적균형에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mechanical horseback riding exercise on dynamic balance in patients with cerebral infarction. Methods: The subjects of this study were 30 cerebral infarction patients. Subjects in the control group received physical therapy for 45 minutes, three times per week, and those in the experimental group received mechanical horseback riding exercise for 30 minutes, three times per week, with physical therapy for 45 minutes, three times per week, during a period of six weeks. For evaluation of dynamic balance ability, limit of stability (LOS) was measured and TUG test was performed. Results: According to the test result, LOS showed a significant increase after the exercise, and TUG showed a significant decrease after the exercise. However, no significant correlation was observed between LOS difference and TUG difference. Conclusion: Mechanical horseback riding exercise is effective for improvement of dynamic balance in patients with cerebral infarction. Mechanical horseback riding exercise is a useful indoor exercise program for clinical use for improvement of dynamic balance.

  • The welding methods have been applied to the most structural products used in the automobile, ship construction, and construction. The structure steel must have sufficient strength of structure; However, the mechanical properties of the welded part changes when it is welded. Therefore, the stability or life of the structure may be affected by the changed mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the welded part must be examined in order to ensure the safety of structure. In this research, the SS400 steel and the STS304 steel were used to estimate the mechanical properties of the HAZ by weld thermal cycle simulation. In this study, the materials were used to examine the weld thermal cycle simulation characteristic, under two conditions: the drawing with diameter of $\Phi$10 and the residual stress removal treatment. To examine the mechanical properties by the weld thermal cycle simulation, the tensile test was carried out in room temperature. The crosshead speed was lmm/min.

  • The leak before break(LBB) concept is difficult to apply to a structure with a thin tube that is immersed in a water environment. A heat exchanger in a nuclear power plant is such a structure. The present paper addresses an application of the LBB concept to a heat exchanger in a nuclear power plant. The minimum leaked coolant amount(approximately 37.9 liters) containing the radioactive material which can activate the radiation detector device installed in near the heat exchanger is assumed. A postulated initial flaw size that can not grow to a critical flaw size within the time period to activate the radiation detector is justified. In this case, the radiation detector can activate the warning signal caused by coolant leakage from initially postulated flaws of the heat exchanger. The nuclear plant can safely shutdown when this occurs. Since the postulated initial flaw size can not grow to the critical flaw size, the structural integrity of the heat exchanger is not impeded. Particularly the informational scenario presented in this paper discusses an actual nuclear plant.

  • Effect of Mn addition on rolling contact fatigue of C-base induction hardened bearing steels has been investigated to develop inexpensive surface-hardened bearing steels with improved resistance to rolling contact fatigue. Fatigue tests were conducted in elasto-hydrodynamic lubricating conditions at a shaft speed of 5,000rpm, under max. Hertzian stress of $492kg/mm^2$. It was found in the C-Mn steels that effective depth of induction hardened layer and amount of retained austenite were slightly increased in comparison with those of C-base steels. finer interlamellar spacing of pearlite in the C-Mn steels was also observed using TEM. Decomposition of retained austenite during rolling contact fatigue was smaller in quantity in the C-Mn steels than C-base steels. This might be associated with enhanced mechanical stability of retained austenite with addition of Mn. Statistical analysis of fatigue life for C-Mn steels using Weibull distribution indicated that improved resistance to rolling contact fatigue was mainly attributed to transformation induced plasticity and mechanical stability of retained austenite.

  • The GFRP(Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic) pipe is designed to behave safely against the external forces and to secure stability of deformation and settlements of pipe, since it is laid under the ground. In this study, the evaluation for the pressure stability was carried out by performing the laboratory experiments to figure out the mechanical properties of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic pipe, take a theoretical approach, and suggest the mechanical properties necessary for the analysis and design of GFRP. Numerical analysis is also conducted to evaluate on the field application through the comparison concerning relations between deformation and differential settlement in the GFRP and hume pipes when all and half sections are under the surcharge load.

An Evaluation on the Combustion Characteristics of Heavy Oil-Water Emulsions (중질유-물 유화연료의 연소특성 평가)

  • Most researches regarding emulsified fuel were in the areas of emulsifier, emulsified fuel manufacturing and emulsified fuel droplet combustion, but there were little papers published regarding emulsified fuel combustion and boiler efficiency in an industrial boiler. The main purpose of this study is to clarify whether improvements in the boiler efficiency and the reduction of pollutants such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke exist or not when emulsified fuels are combusted in the commercial boiler. Main experimental parameters were water content in heavy oil , excess $O_2$, and boiler load. The fuels used in this experiment were 0.5 B-C, and 5 kinds of 0.5 B-C/water emulsified fuels. The combustion characteristics of heavy oil and its emulsions with water were investigated in an industrial boiler. The combustion stability was monitored and exhaust gases such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke were measured with excess $O_2$ and combustion load. In case of emulsified fuel combustion, flame stability was poor and boiler efficiency was lowered by 1.6~5.7%, but emission levels of CO and smoke were improved.

An analytical solution for buckling failure of rock slopes based on elastoplastic slab theory

  • Buckling failure is one of the classical types of catastrophic landslides developing on inclination-paralleled rock slopes, which is mainly governed by its self-weight, earthquake and ground water. However, nearly none of the existing studies fully consider the influence of slope self-weight, earthquake and ground water on the mechanical model of buckling failure. In this paper, based on energy equilibrium principle and elastoplastic slab theory, a thorough mechanical analysis on bucking slopes has been carried out. Furthermore, an analytical solution for slip bucking failure of rock slopes has been proposed, which fully considers the effect of slope self-weight, seismic force and hydrostatic pressure. Finally, the methodology is used to conduct comparative analysis with other analytical solutions for three practical buckling studies. The results show that the proposed approach is capable of providing a more accurate and reasonable evaluation for stability of rock slopes with potential buckling failure.
