This paper presents the performance characteristic of a Francis hydro turbine with an inline casing. This turbine is designed for city water supply system. Due to large changes in ground elevation with high points and low points, some systems may experience larger-than-normal required pressures in areas with low ground elevations. One way to dissipate these excess pressures is by the use of an inline-turbine instead of an inline-pressure reducing valve. For best applicability and minimal space consumption, the turbine is designed with an inline casing instead of the common spiral casing. As a characteristic of inline casing, the flow accesses to the runner in the radial direction, showing a low efficiency. The installation of vanes improves the internal flow and gives the positive encouragement to the output power. For the power transmission to the outside of the turbine casing from the runner axis, a belt passage is designed in the inline casing, as its influence, the region after the belt passage shows a relatively low output power. The clearance gap in the runner side space is considered, in which a small volume of flow is contracted into the clearance gap, forming the leakage flow. The leakage flow leads to a decrease in the efficiency.

The substantial loss behind axial flow rotor was generated by wake, various vortices in the hub region and the leakage vortex in the tip region. Particularly, the leakage vortex formed near blade tip was one of the main causes of the reduction of performance, the generation of noise and the aerodynamic vibration in rotor downstream. In this study, the three-dimensional flowfields in an axial flow rotor for various tip clearances were calculated, and the numerical results were compared with the experimental ones. The numerical technique was based on SIMPLE algorithm using standard k-.epsilon. model (WFM). Through calculations, the effects of the tip clearance on the overall performance of rotor and the loss distributions, and the increase in the displacement, momentum, and blade-force-deficit thickness of the casing wall boundary layer were investigated. The mass-averaged flow variables behind rotor agreed well with the experimental results. The presence of the tip leakage vortex behind rotor was described well. Although the loci of leakage vortex by calculation showed some differences compared with the experimental results, its behavior for various tip clearances was clarified by examining the loci of vortex center.

A precise linear motion stage supported by magnetically preloaded air bearings is introduced where preloading magnetic actuators are combined with permanent magnets and coils to adjust air bearing clearance by controlling magnetic force actively. Each of the magnetic actuators has a permanent magnet generating nominal magnetic flux for required preload and a coil to perturb the magnetic force resulting adjustment of air-bearing clearance. The characteristics of porous aerostatic bearing are analyzed by numerical analysis, and analytic magnetic circuit model is driven for magnetic actuator to calculate nominal preload and variation of force due to current. A 1-axis linear stage motorized with a coreless linear motor and a linear encoder is built for verifying this design concept. With the active magnetic preloading actuators controlled with DSP board and PWM power amplifiers, the active on-line adjusting tests about the vertical, pitching and rolling motion were performed, and the result shows very good linearity.

Internal and external heat sources will cause to deform to machine elements in the contact joint of structure, which results in the change of contact pressure distribution different from initial assembly. Heat induced variations of contact pressure will change the static and dynamic properties such as contact stiffness, damping as well as contact heat conduction in the structure In order to design and control the intelligent machine tool operating in variant conditions more sophisticatedly, the good prediction for the changes of prescribed properties are strongly required especially in the contact elements adjacent to the rotational or linear bearing. This paper presents some computational and experimental results in regard to static and dynamic characteristics of the press-fitted bush and shaft assembly which is a model of the bearing innerrace and shaft assembly. In the condition of heat generation on the outer surface of the bush, the effects of changes in the negative clearance and the heat flux on pressure distribution and dynamic properties are investigated. Results of this study show that the edge effect of the bush and the initial clearance have effects on the transient dynamic characteristics significantly.

This paper presents the characteristics of flank and tip seal leakage in a scroll compressor for air-conditioners with R-22 under actual operating conditions. It is well known that the leakage has significant effect on the performance of the scroll compressor. Experiments were performed by using indirect method for measuring mass flow rate passing through flank and tip seal under actual operating conditions, In addition, an analytical model for tip seal leakage was developed to investigate tangential and radial leakage observed at grooves and contact points of tip seals. For low oil concentration, theoretical results were compared with experimental data to verify the analytical model. As a result, leakages through flank and tip seal parts were evaluated as afunction of pressure ratio, orbiting angle, discharge pressure, tip clearance, and leakage point. It was also found that the tip seal leakage was considerable even though the tip seal provided adequate sealing effect.

The electric controlled marine diesel engine has fuel pump generating the high pressurized fuel for fuel injection to combustion chamber via a common rail. Fuel pump consists of a cam-roller system. Journal bearing installed between a roller and a cam-roller pin is subjected to fluctuating heavy and instant loads by cam lift. First, Kinematic analysis is carried out to predict bearing loads during one cycle acting on the journal bearing. Second, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis and transient elasto-hydrodynamic(EHD) lubrication analysis for journal bearing considering elastic deformation of cam-roller pin, roller and bearing are conducted using AVL EXCITE/PU software to predict lubrication performance. The clearance ratio and journal groove shape providing lubrication oil are important parameter in bearing design having good performance and can be changed easier than other design parameters such as diameter, width, oil supply pressure and bearing material grade. Generally, journal bearing performance is represented by the minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) and peak oil film pressure(POFP). As well as the traditional design parameters(MOFT, POFP), in this study, temperature rise of lubrication oil is also evaluated through the side leakage flow of supplied oil. By the evaluating MOFT, POFP and temperature rise, the optimum bearing clearance ratio is decided.
A DE-side LBP tilting pad journal bearing of a 1-stage overhung heat-pump compressor in a propylene process exhibited abnormal high-temperature behavior. Its temperature had been relatively high at $78^{\circ}C$ from the beginning of operation. In 2014, after three years of operation, it increased suddenly and reached $103^{\circ}C$. Installing a varnish removal equipment and others managed to stabilize the temperature at $95^{\circ}C$. We undertook a troubleshooting approach for reviewing the comprehensive status and integrity of the temperature design of the bearing. We performed lubrication and heat-balance analysis, based on the design engineering data and documents supplied by the OEM. For the base design data of DE-side TPJB, evaluating the effects of key design variables on bearing metal temperature showed that firstly, increasing the bearing clearance and supply oil flow-rate, and next, changing the oil type, and finally, increasing the machined pad clearance and offset, are more effective in reducing the bearing metal temperature. Furthermore, a clarification meeting with the OEM revealed that an incorrect decision had been made to decrease the bearing clearance to eliminate the SSV harshness issue, while not maintaining a sufficient oil flow-rate. We conducted a detailed retrofit design analysis, wherein we increased the oil flow-rate and bearing clearance by decreasing the preload. We predicted that the bearing temperature would decrease to $63^{\circ}C$ from $75.7^{\circ}C$ even at the rerate condition. Finally, after installing and operating a retrofit replacement bearing in 2015, the bearing temperature stabilized at a low temperature of $65^{\circ}C$. Currently (January. 2017), two year later, the bearing metal temperature remains at $65^{\circ}C$. Therefore, we can conclude that the abnormal high-temperature behavior of the bearing has been resolved completely.

The piston-cylinder mechanism is widely adopted in the hydraulic machine components. In these cases, the hydrodynamic pressures are generated in the clearance gap between the piston and cylinder under lubrication action of the oils. Under the eccentric condition of the piston in the cylinder bore, the asymmetric pressure distributions in the circumferential direction result in lateral forces on the piston. When the lateral forces act as increasing the piston eccentricity, excessive wear can be occurs in the cylinder bore and piston. In this paper, the hydrodynamic pressures generated in the clearance are measured using a stationary piston and moving cylinder apparatus. The experimental results showed that the hydrodynamic pressure distributions are highly affected by the eccentricity of the piston.
Recently, Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) is widely used in automotive industry since the transformation characteristic of its material can be changed. However, clearance between welding surfaces becomes the important factor which affect the quality of the laser weld, causing difficulties in preparing the sheet. The objective of this paper is to systematically evaluate the effects of previously presented fracture criterion and shearing condition on precise mechanical shearing simulation result. For this purpose, a parametric study was peformed to investigate the effect of finite element size and fracture criterion on simulation result. Also, in order to predict the optimum shearing condition, effect of shearing conditions such as clearance and punch radius on the shear plane shape was evaluated.
IC leadframe needs precision shape for good efficiency. Friction conditions also have a significant impact on blanking deformation. Therefore, studying the friction produced by the tribology between die and materials becomes necessary. In this study, in order to measure mechanical properties and frictions for leadframe materials such as Ni alloys and coppers, tensile test and straight pulling friction test are executed. In particular, the effect of clearance on the blanking characteristics depending on friction coefficient is examined by finite element simulation. From the finite element simulation, the metal flow, side pressure of punch and crack initiation are evaluated according to the leadframe materials.
