  • I. Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare the shaping ability between the single length technique performed with Mtwo instruments (VDW, Munich, Germany) and the crown-down technique using K3 (SybronEndo, West Collins, CA, USA) and RaCe (FKG, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) instruments. II. Materials & Methods Forty five curved canals in resin blocks were equally divided in to three groups. Group 1 (Mtwo) was instrumented used the full length of canal according to the manufacturer's instructions. The simulated canals was prepared to an instrument size of 35, 0.04 taper canal terminus. In group 2 (Race) and group 3 (K3) was instrumented in a crown-down manner and prepared to an instrument size of 30, 0.06 taper canal terminus. Pre- and post-instrumentation images were scanned and assessment of canal shape was completed with a computer image analysis program. Material removal was measured at 7 measuring points, beginning 1mm from the end point of preparation. Differenced of centering ratio were statistically analyzed using One-way ANOVA followed by Duncan's test. II. Results & Conclusion There was no significant difference on 1, 2, 3 and 7mm measuring point. At 4 and 5 measuring point, significant difference showed between the Mtow instruments and other two instruments. (p<0.05)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a survey instrument to assess the Patient Safety Culture in Korean hospitals and evaluate its validity and reliability. Methods: A preliminary instrument was developed through a literature review, focus group interviews, content validity testing, and pretesting for face validity. A total of 467 hospital employees participated in the psychometric testing. Validity and reliability assessments included content validity, construct validity, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency. Results: The Korean Patient Safety Culture Survey Instrument comprised 35 items across seven factors: leadership, patient safety policy and procedure, patient safety improvement system, teamwork, non-punitive environment, patient safety knowledge and attitudes, and patient safety priority. These seven factors contributed 60.98% of the variance of the total scale. Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency was .93; the seven factors ranged from .66 to .91. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the Korean Patient Safety Culture Survey Instrument is reliable, valid, and suitable for measuring patient safety culture in Korean hospitals.

  • Spasticity is a velocity-dependent stretch reflex disorder of the body motor system developing after the injury of the central nervous system, in which certain muscles are continuously contracted involuntarily. Conventional methods such as the modified Ashworth scale, Spasm frequency scale, pendulum test and isokinetic dynamometer had some disadvantages: limitation in discriminating the increase of resistance, immovable and expensive device, not enough study parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce clinically more useful instrument, which can produce objective data and are more convenient on spasticity measurement. Spasticity measuring methods were reviewed and a new measuring instrument was designed and introduced. The new measuring system is a portable spasticity-measurement system, which encompass various scopes of spasticity-related human signals such as electrophysiologic, kinematic and biomechanical data. Our device was designed in order to measure the joint angle, angular velocity, electromyographic signals and force. We suggest that this new system can diagnose the spasticity of the muscles, objectively.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to analyze the domestic research trend focusing on well-being studies in medicine. Through this study, the researchers attempt to explore the research trends of the well-being in Traditional Korean Medicine. Methods : Well-being as a key word was searched on representative domestic databases of articles and the researchers collected the articles of medical journals published from 1980 to 2012. Finally 416 articles of well-being were selected. Results : Among the fields of medicine, well-being studies have been mainly proceeded by nursing science, preventive medicine and psychiatry. Well-being studies that mainly analyzed the variables associated wih quality of life and well-being to cancer patients, workers and elderly. But every measuring instrument searched with well-being was adapted from western tools. And there has not been any study used measuring instrument of well-being and interventions related to Traditional Korean Medicine. Conclusions : In order to handle the new wave of well-being and quality of life, research methods using tools to measure these variables need to be developed. Furthermore, it seems to be necessary that research on how to take advantage of Yangseng that is health concept of Traditional Korean Medicine.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the instrument modification and validation processes to make existing health belief model scales culturally appropriate for Korean Americans (KAs) regarding colorectal cancer (CRC) screening utilization. Methods: Instrument translation, individual interviews using cognitive interviewing, and expert reviews were conducted during the instrument modification phase, and a pilot test and a cross-sectional survey were conducted during the instrument validation phase. Data analyses of the cross-sectional survey included internal consistency and construct validity using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The main issues identified during the instrument modification phase were (a) cultural and linguistic translation issues and (b) newly developed items reflecting Korean cultural barriers. Cross-sectional survey analyses during the instrument validation phase revealed that all scales demonstrate good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha=.72~.88). Exploratory factor analysis showed that susceptibility and severity loaded on the same factor, which may indicate a threat variable. Items with low factor loadings in the confirmatory factor analysis may relate to (a) lack of knowledge about fecal occult blood testing and (b) multiple dimensions of the subscales. Conclusion: Methodological, sequential processes of instrument modification and validation, including translation, individual interviews, expert reviews, pilot testing and a cross-sectional survey, were provided in this study. The findings indicate that existing instruments need to be examined for CRC screening research involving KAs.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to conduct a systematic review and to describe characteristics of the birth experience assessment instrument. Methods: Literature related to the development of the birth experience assessment instrument was examined using a systematic review method. A literature search was conducted using the keywords as '[normal birth]; [$satisfac^*$ OR care quality]; [instrument OR scale] AND (development)' through PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, PsycINFO, and RISS. The search used quality appraisal through QUADAS (Quality Assessment of studies of Diagnostic Accuracy included Systemic reviews) yielding 17 records. Results: The birth experience assessment instrument was categorized for instrumental characteristics: birth satisfaction (n=8), perception of labor experience (n=5), and birth care quality assessment in normal and operative birth experiences (n=4). Important key elements for content characteristics were as follows: nursing practice (n=10), pain control (n=5), environment (n=5), participation (n=4), and support (n=4). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the birth experience instrument is appropriate for measuring quality of birth care in various clinical conditions. This review of the birth experience instrument reports that an appropriate psychometric tool for enhancing quality of birth care is important.
