One of the preferred methods that can be used to verify the results of finite element analysis is to measure surface strains of the deformed part for purpose of direct comparison with simulation results. Instead of using the usual manual method the vision-based measurement method is capable of determining surface geometry and strain from the deformed grid pattern automatically with the help of a computer. To obtain strain distribution over an area, the coordinates of such a surface grid are determined from the multiple video images by applying the photogrammetry principle. Methods to improve the overall accuracy of the vision-based strain measurement system are explored and the possible accuracies that can be attained by such a measurement method are discussed. A major emphasis is placed on the initial grid application method its accuracy and ease of subsequent image processing. Finite element analyses of limiting dome height(LDH) test are carried out and the results of them are compared with exsperimen-tal data.

Recently, force measurement systems are commonly used in many industrial fields and the precision of the measurement system is getting more important as the industry needs more precise tools and in struments to make high quality products. However, a high precision force measurement system is hard to make unless we know precisely the causes, quality and quantity of measurement errors in advance. In this work, many possible mechanical causes of measurement errors are reviewed including ratio of length to diameter of sensing part, radius of contact area, radius of bearing part, ratio of material properties and change of boundary conditions. Also, the measurement errors are analyzed by nonlinear finite element method and the nonlinear behavior of the errors are investigated. The results can be used to design force measurement systems and expected to be very useful especially for compact type load cells.

The measurement of residual stress distribution of $Si_3N_4/SUS304$ joint was performed on 23 specimens with the same joint condition using PSPC type X-ray stress measurement system and the two-dimensional elastoplastic analysis using finite element method was also attempted. As results, residual stress distribution near the interface on the ceramic side of the joint was revealed quantitatively. Residual stress on the ceramic side of the joint was turned out to be tensional near the interface, maximum along the edge, varying in accordance with the condition of the joint and variance to be most conspicuous for the residual stress normal to the interface characterized by the stress singularities. In the vicinity of the interface, the high stress concentration occurs and residual stress distributes three-dimensionally. Therefore, the measured stress distribution differed remarkably from the result of the two-dimensional finite-element analysis. Especially at the center of the specimen near the interface, the residual stress, $\sigma_{x}$ obtained from the finite element analysis was compressive, whereas measurement using X-ray yielded tensile $\sigma_{x}$. Here we discuss two dimensional superposition model the discrepancy between the results from the two dimensional finite element analysis and X-ray measurement.

When the relative humidity is measured with an aspirated psychrometer, three factors, which affect the measurement of relative humidity, are atmospheric pressure, the size of wet element and the wind velocity. This paper investigated the effects of the above three factors, and the computer code was developed in order to enhance the accuracy of the relative humidity measurement. As results, it is found that the relative humidity decreases by 6%RH with increasing atmospheric pressure from 650 mbar to 1100 mbar. It is found that the relative humidity drops down when the size of the wet element increases, though the effect of the size of the wet element is not significant. Finally, relative humidity increases with the increasing wind velocity. The difference between the psychrometic table in the present KS and the present results is about 2%RH maximum. As a conclusion, the three factors mentioned above should be considered in order to secure accurate measurement of relative humidity.
This study is performed to understand three dimensional characteristics of weld residual stress for the surface weld on the stainless steel plate. AISI 304 plate with one path weld on the surface was used as a test specimen. Finite element analysis was done to analyze thermal transient and residual stress due to weld. The result of finite element analysis was validated by previous paper and measurement data. Among various techniques for residual stress measurement, instrumented ball indentation method was applied. The calculated residual stresses by finite element analysis showed good agreement with the measured results.

Since a derailment of rolling stocks results in huge losses in properties and lives, the measurement of a derailment coefficient is a very important test item to estimate the running safety of rolling stocks. For a measurement of the derailment measurement of forces between the wheel and rail a measuring wheel-set should be made first. The process to make a measuring wheel-set has some stages for correct measurement. They are as follows; a finite element analysis of a wheel to find a position of holes at which vertical force shall be measured, a finite element analysis for the position of strain gauges.

Despite the highly sophisticated development of finite element analysis, a finite element model for structural dynamic analysis can be inaccurate or even incorrect due to the difficulties of correct modelling, uncertainties on the finite element input data and geometrical oversimplification, while the modal data extracted from measurement are supposed to be correct, even though incomplete. The assumption that the test results represent the true dynamic behaviour of the structure, however, may not be correct because of various measurement errors. The measurement errors are investigated and their effects on estimated frequency response functions(FRFs) are also investigated.

One of major problems in analyzing failure mechanism of real components is the accurate measurement of crack size and shape. The DCPD(Direct Current Potential Drop) method has been widely used for the crack measurement of a structure and finite element analysis has been used for the derivation of calibration equations, which relates the potential drop with the crack depth. In this paper, finite element analyses were performed for semi-elliptical surface cracks with various crack shapes(a/c) and crack depths(a/t). As a result, a calibration equation has been derived for the measurement of a semi-elliptical surface crack in wide plates. Analytical results are compared with experimental results to evaluate the validity and the applicability of the derived equation. The proposed method is expected to provide efficient and accurate measurement of a surface crack during crack growth.

A two-dimensional boundary element method was used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled hole(SDH). The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated for shear vertical(SV) wave, and their frequency and time-domain results were presented. The time-domain scattering amplitude showed the directly reflected wave from the SDH leading edge as well as the creeping wave. In an immersion, pulse-echo testing, two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from SDHs. The 2-D boundary element scattering amplitude was converted to the 3-D amplitude to be used in the measurement model. The receiver voltage was calculated fer SV wave incidence at 45$^{\circ}C$ on the 1 m diameter SDH, and the result was compared with experiment.

In this paper, a new stacked element pressure sensor has proposed for heartbeat and respiration measurement. This device can be directly attached to an individual's chest; heartbeat and respiration are detected by the pulsatile vibration and deformation of the chest. A key feature of the device is the simultaneous measurement of heart rate and respiration. The structure of the sensor consists of two stacked elements, in which one element includes one polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin film bonded on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. In addition, for the measurement and signal processing, the electric circuit and the filter are simply constructed with an OP-amp, resistance, and a capacitor. One element (element1, PDMS) maximizes the respiration signal; the other (element2, PVDF) is used to measure heartbeat. Element1 and element2 had sensitivity of 0.163V/N and 0.209V/N, respectively, and element2 showed improved characteristics compared with element1 in response to force. Thus, element1 and element2 were optimized for measuring respiration heart rate, respectively. Through mechanical and vivo human tests, this sensor shows the great potential to optimize the signals of heartbeat and respiration compared with commercial devices. Moreover, the proposed sensor is flexible, light weight, and low cost. All of these characteristics illustrate an effective piezoelectric pressure sensor for heartbeat and respiration measurements.
