  • The frame elements of modern high speed trains are typically fabricated with extruded aluminum panels. However, the sound transmission loss (STL) of extruded aluminum panels is less satisfactory than flat panels with the same surface density. This study proposes a method for prediction of the sound transmission loss of extruded aluminum panels using finite element analysis. The panel is modeled by finite element analysis, and the STL is calculated using a measure of Sommerfeld radiation at the specimen surface, boundary conditions, and the internal loss factor of the material. In order to verify the validity of the predicted value, intensity transmission loss was measured on the aluminum specimen according to ASTM E2249-02. The proposed method of analysis will be utilized to predict the sound insulation performance of extruded aluminum panels for railway vehicles in the design stage, and to establish measures for their improvement.

  • SCM440, which is widely used as the diesel engine piston of vessel, has been hardened by a $CO_2$ laser with the wavelength of $10.6{\mu}m$. Laser hardening experiment has been carried out for the condition of a laser power 1kW, the travel speed between 0.4 and 1.5m/min, and a rectangular-Gaussian beam. Residual stress has been measured by using middle point technique of half value width of X-ray diffraction method. It was found that the compressive residual stress with the range between 400 and 600MHz has distributed in the laser hardening zones and the tensile residual stress between 100 and 200MHz has distributed in the boundary of hardening zones.

  • The mechanical properties of STD11 Joints by using TLP (Transient Liquid Phase Diffusion) bonding method employing MBF-30 and MBF-80 insert metals were investigated with concerning to the microstructural change. TLP bonding of STD 11 was carried out at 1323∼1423K for 0.6ks∼3.6ks in vacuum. The microstructure and the element distribution of the interlayer between tool steels and insert metals showed specific feature with bonding conditions. It was found that the width of the interlayer increased at initial bonding stage. However, the width of interlayer showed nearly constant value during the isothermal solidification. After isothermal solidification was completed, the joint showed homogeneous element distribution and similar microstructure with base metal because of the grain boundary migration to the bonded interlayer. The bonding strength measured by a tensile test has been varied with the bonding conditions. The maximum joint strength, 760MPa, was obtained with the condition of 1423K for 1.2ks using MBF30 insert metal in this experiment.

  • The present study investigates the combustion phenomena in a sludge incinerator using experimental and numerical method. The temperature and gas concentration were measured at 33 points during operation of the incinerator in order to assess the mixing and combustion characteristics. Numerical simulation was also carried out using a commercial CFD code. Simplified inlet conditions were introduced in oder to predict the bulk solid combustion and the diffusion of the volatile matter released by pyrolysis of sludge. The experimental results showed that the combustion process is extremely inhomogeneous. Large variations were observed in the temperature and gas concentrations in the freeboard of the incinerator due to poor mixing performance between the air and the combustibles, which is caused by massive and bulk generation of volatile matter by fast pyrolysis of sludge particles. The boundary condition of the CFD simulation was found effective in predicting the poor mixing and combustion performance of the reactor.

  • The majority of problems to which FDTD is being applied involve open structure which require the appropriate scheme to terminate the computational domain. In particular, for the propagation problem of the outgoing waves, a certain type of boundary condition needs to be applied on outer boundaries of the computational domain to generate no reflected waves. In this paper, a new simple technique is presented, which allows the reduced computation time and excellent absorbing characteristics for normal and oblique incident waves on outer boundaries. To illustrate the validity of this method, a numerical calculation for monopole antenna is carried out and the results are compared to measured data. The time-domain properties for circular patch antennas are investicated.

  • Carbon dioxide in atmosphere causes concrete carbonation which is the phenomenon, that is, the pH of concrete changes from 12-13 to 8.85-10. Even though the carbon dioxide concentration of indoor is higher than that of outdoor, the micro measurement has not carried out. The concentration of carbon dioxide was measured in three places. The data was used as boundary condition to FEM analysis for expectation of concrete carbonation depth. The affect of building finish materials to concrete carbonation was discussed.

  • The convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of a large liquid petroleum liquid injection(LPLi) engine piston with the oil gallery are analyzed by solving an inverse thermal conduction problem. The heat transfer coefficients are numerically found so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. Using the resulting heat transfer coefficients as the boundary condition, temperature of a large LPLi engine piston is analyzed. With varying cooling water temperature, temperature, stress, and thermal expansion of the piston are analyzed and evaluated.

  • The distributions of blood pressure, blood flow, and blow volume in the left common artery (LCCA) were determined using the lumping parameter method. In order to develop a mathematical model for microcirculation in LCCA, the present study adopted preexisted set of measured morphological data on anatomy, mechanical properties of the coronary vessels, viscosity of blood, the basic laws of physics, and the appropriate boundary condition. Pressures and volumes of blood and flow resistance were expressed in terms of electrical voltages, current, and resistances, respectively, in the electrical analog model. The results of two mathematical models, symmetrical and asymmetrical models, were compared with other investigator's data. The present results were in good agreement with previous studies. It was found that the mean pressure profiles were similar in both models.

  • The purpose of the present research is to develop an efficient numerical method for the calculation of potential flow and predict the wave-making resistance for the application to ship design of tuna purse seiner. The paper deals with the numerical calculation of potential flow around the series 60 with forward velocity by the new slender ship theory. This new slender ship theory is based on the asymptotic expression of the Kelvin-source, distributed over the small matrix at each transverse section so as to satisfy the approximate hull boundary condition due to the assumption of slender body. Some numerical results for series 60, C sub(b) =0.6, hull are presented in this paper. The wave pattern and wave resistance are computed at two Froude numbers, 0.267 and 0.304. These results are better than those of Michell's thin ship theory in comparison with measured results. However, it costs much time to compute not only wave resistance but also wave pattern over some range of Froude numbers. More improvements are strongly desired in the numerical procedure.

  • For the development of an electric molding machine with low energy, high performance, and high reliability, characterization, finite element analysis and fatigue strength analyses were performed. Strain was measured by strain gages bonded on electric molding machine and compared with stress analysis results using I-DEAS. The analyses showed good agreement with test results. By means of the comparison, we could draw an adequate boundary condition for the stress analysis of the components of electric molding machine. Additionally, we could verify the load distribution mechanism among the parts. The life prediction results for tie bar and thread zone showed infinite life.
