The Syntax and Semantics of Yekan and Its Cousins

  • This paper is concerned with the distribution and interpretation of yekan and its cognates. Syntactically they require negation, but semantically the sentences in which they occur are positive ones that make monotone increasing inferences possible. This syntax-semantics discrepancy can be best accounted for by showing that yekan and its cousins must be strictly c-commanded by metalinguistic negation at the surface structure and that the positive meaning of the sentences they are part of is derived from the cancellation of the pragmatic upper-bounding implicatum associated with them. These also enable us to explain why they do not occur in the environments where typical NPIs do and why only certain forms of negation license them.

  • In this paper, we psresent the design strategy of the assistive communication system for the mute and speech disorder to be able to communicate with people under the restricted circumstances. First, it should be used conventiently in daily life and a specific domain should be set accoridng to the circumstance. Second, proper words in each domain should be selected according to the physical and mental ability of users. This paper seeks to highlight some of the issues involved in using semantic compaction in adynamic environment. (e.g. noun and verb explorable system). In additon, symbols are used in this system in order to make users recognize clearly the meaning of a words. The sentences are compounded from symbols. The compounded sentences are shown on the display monitor in letter,s and synthesized naturally in voice in order to be understood easily.

  • 수학적 명제들을 사용하는 수학교육용 게임의 학습 도움말이나 안내말은 그래픽 우선 인지스타일을 가진 게임세대의 학습자를 위해 그래픽적인 형태로 표현하는 것이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 수학 명제들에 대한 객체 기반 비주얼적 표현방법을 제안하였다. 이 표현방법은 단어들과 함께 그래픽적 기호들과 수학적 기호들 사용하여 객체 기반적인 표현방법의 규칙을 갖고 있다. 그래서 수학적 의미를 정확하게 표현하거나 이해하기가 쉽다. 그리고 학습자가 내용을 빠르게 읽을 수 있다. 제안된 방법은 게임 세대 학습자들에게 교육용 게임을 통해 수학 학습의 스캐폴딩으로써 도움을 받기가 좋다.

사회감정전략을 이용한 영어독해수업 모형제시를 위한 이론 및 사례연구 분석 (An analysis of the theories and a case study for teaching EFL reading with the use of socioaffective strategies)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine some of the theories concerning socioaffective strategies, to analyze the dialogues of the students negotiating for meaning of a reading material and to suggest some implications of socioaffective strategies for teaching reading. The examination of the theories - the interaction hypothesis and the sociocultural theory - suggest that the use of socioaffective strategies facilitates more effective understanding of information that is to be found. distributed, and taken in among the participants. The discourse analyses of the students' interaction in a Korean college English reading class show ample evidence of the use of socioaffective strategies that helped them understand the meaning of a text. However, the analyses show that the strategies are mostly used to ask questions concerning the meaning of clauses. Only few analytical questions are raised for some structural and pragmatical features in the text which are crucial to the understanding of its meaning. Imbalance also exists in the types of the questions used by the participants. The analyses indicate that, instead of negotiating more interactively, the students tend to rely upon a more advanced student when they face difficult English sentences. Therefore as a conclusion this paper emphasizes the importance of teaching socioaffective strategies to help students to help themselves to become more cooperative, independent and analytical in reading English texts.

Resolving Multi-Translatable Verbs Japanese-TO-Korean Machine Translation

  • It is well-known that there are many similarities between Japanese and Korean language. For example, the order of words and the nature of the grammatical conjugation of both languages are almost the same. Another similarity is the frequent omission of the subject from a sentence. Moreover, both languages have honorific expressions and the identical concept for expressing nouns in terms of Chinese characters. Using these similarities, we have developed a word-to-word translation system which does away with any deep level analysis of syntactic and semantic structures of the two languages. If we use these similarities, the direct translation method is superior to the internal language translation method or transfer-based translation method. Although the MT system based on the direct translation method is more easily developed than the ones based on other methods, it may have a lot of difficulties when it tries to select the appropriate target word from ambiguous source verbs. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to extract the meaning of substantives and to make use of the order of the extracted meaning. We could select $86.5\%$ appropriate verbs in the sample sentences from IPAL-verb-dictionary. $13.5\%$ indicates the cases in which we could not distinguish the meaning of substantives. We are convinced, however, that the succeeding rate can be increased by getting rid of the meaning of verbs thatare not used so often.

소설에 나타난 안방의 의미와 용도에 관한 연구 (A Study on 'An-Band' It's Meaning and Practical Use Mentioned in Novel)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out to meaning and practical use of 'Anbang' of which unique roles and function has not been changed till now since Chosun dynasty. The Study has been carried out by selecting 27 novels in which the word 'Anbang' mentioned frequently and analyzing the sentences with 'Anbang' . The major finding were summarized as follows: 1. Since Chosun dynasty till now, 'Anbang' in most important space for Korean in residential area its meaning and practical use had not been changed. 2. The meaning of Anbang could be categorized into two parts; One was general symbolic meaning which was perceived mentally in general and the other was specific symbolic meaning which was varied by uses. In case of general symbolic meaning 'Anbang' implied a space with light turned on late at night, a very special space from the point of interior decoration and size, a space to keep very important stuffs and a space to deal with very important business. In case of specific symbolic meaning during Chosun dynasty, 'Anbang' was used as a pronoun to imply a mistress as major occupant was a mistress. Since then, gradually, 'Anbang' was used as a pronoun to imply married couple as married couple becomes major occupant. 3. The practical use of 'Anbang' cold be categorized into two; One was routine usage and the other was exceptional usage. The typical routine use were sleeping, dining family gathering, visitor greeting, clothes changing and sewing. The exceptional use were a Sebae(new year's bow), Pyebaek(make a deep bow and offer her gifts to her parents-in-law) and patient curing.

초등학교 예비교사들의 수학적 '문제 만들기'에 나타나는 문장의 오류 유형 분석 (Analysis on Sentence Error Types of Mathematical Problem Posing of Pre-Service Elementary Teachers)

  • 본 논문은 초등학교 예비교사 100명을 대상으로 수학적 '문제 만들기'의 문장에 나타나는 오류를 분석하고 그에 대한 간단한 예방책을 기술한 논의이다. '문제 만들기' 문장에는 '음운 오류, 단어 오류, 문장 오류, 의미 오류, 표기 오류' 등 5가지 오류 유형이 나타났다. 이를 다시 14개의 세부 유형으로 구분하여 세부적으로 논의하였다. 곧 음운 오류의 유형은 'ㄹ'첨가 오류와 조사끼리의 준말 사용 오류가 있다. 단어 오류는 크게 '부적절한 사용 오류'와 '부당한 생략 오류'로 구분하고 이를 다시 조사, 어미, 어휘의 사용 오류와 조사와 어휘의 부당한 생략 오류로 유형화하였다. 문장 오류는 '지시 대상의 오류, 문장 성분의 생략 오류, 어순 오류, 자체 비문'의 네 가지로 유형화하였다. 의미 오류는 논리적 모순 관계 오류와 중의성을 띄는 의미 오류에 대해서만 논의하였고, 표기 오류는 띄어쓰기와 문장 부호, 철자에 관한 한글 맞춤법 오류와 외래어 표기법 오류 등에 대하여 논의하였다. 또한 14개의 문법적 세부 오류 유형을 방지하기 위한 예방책을 제시하였다. 먼저 구어와 문어의 차이를 인식하고, 둘째 글을 쓰는 문어 상황에 맞도록 구어적 표현을 지양하도록 하는 것, 셋째 국어 기본 문형 학습에 대한 강조, 넷째 단어 의미의 명확한 이해를 바탕으로 한 의미의 논리적 전개 인식을 제안하였으며, 끝으로 국어 어문 규정에 대한 학습을 제안하였다. 그리고 대학생 글쓰기 교육에 대한 필요성에 대한 재인식을 결론으로 갈음하였다.

Implementation of Pronoun Readings in English: A Categorial Grammar Approach.

  • Pronouns are frequently used in English, and their resolution is important to capture meaning of sentences. This paper provides a computational implementation for pronoun readings in English, based on Chierchia's (1988) Binding Theory in Categorial Grammar. A CCG-like system is newly devised for implementing his ideas, where syntactic phenomena are represented by the functor-argument relations of categories. This relation triggers resolution algorithms, and reflexives and pronominals are resolved succinctly. In sum, this paper gives an efficient resolution algorithm for English pronouns within Categorial Grammar.

"-고 자시고"류 어미 반복 구성에 관한 연구 (The Study on Ending Repetition Construction)

  • Korean verb 'Casi-', which is treated as negative element in dictionaries, is actually a placeholder shows indefinite use, and '-ko casiko' construction is understood as a member of a class of 'Ending repetition construction'. However, unlike among others, '-ko casiko' construction is now undergoing developement of its negative polarity. Because of its indefiniteness, '-ko casiko' construction change its meaning into a universal negative when it is used in negative sentences.

수학적 표현의 교수학적 의의 (On the Pedagogical Significance of Mathematical Representations)

  • The theory of representation, which has been an important topic of epistemology, has long history of study. But it has diverse meaning according to the fields of argument. In this paper the author set the meaning of mathematical representation as the interrelation of internal and external representations. With this concept, the following items were studied. 1. Survey on the concepts of mathematical representations. 2. Investigation of pedagogical significance of the mathematical representations, taking into account the characteristics of school mathematics. 3. Recommendation of principles for teaching representation to cope with the problems that are related with cause of disliking each domain of the secondary school mathematics. This study is expected to enable the development of teaching methods to help students strengthening their ability to comprehend mathematical sentences.
