  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to -dimple print diameter ratio, channel height- to- dimple print diameter ratio. and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer coefficient and friction drag coefficient with a weighting factor. Full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment.

  • A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis has been performed to investigate the turbulent flow and heat transfer in a triangular rod bundle with pitch-to-diameter ratios (P/D) of 1.06 and 1.12. Anisotropic turbulence models predicted the turbulence-driven secondary flow in a triangular subchannel and the distributions of the time mean velocity and temperature, showing a significantly improved agreement with the measurements from the linear standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model. The anisotropic turbulence models predicted the turbulence structure for a rod bundle with a large P/D fairly well, but could not predict the very high turbulent intensity of the azimuthal velocity observed in the narrow flow region (gap) for a rod bundle with a small P/D.

  • Experimental heat transfer data for single-phase water flow in the annuli with corrugated inner tubes are presented. In the annuli with parallel flow, ten different annular arrangements are considered. For water flow rate in 1,700${\gamma}$$\^$*/). As P/e becomes closer to 8 in the range below the radius ratio (${\gamma}$$\^$*/) of 0.5, Nusselt numbers increase. However, Nusselt numbers decrease in the range above the radius ratio (${\gamma}$$\^$*/) of 0.5 because flow reattachment position becomes farther in the narrower clearance.

  • This paper describes a new method for a speech playback speed control with high quality. The proposed method provides an adaptive threshold filtering solution for detecting active regions of a speech signal that are followed by playback speed. For a given playback speed, threshold value is adaptively determined with the statistics(:mean and standard deviation) of each frame in speech, and is used to select only active blocks within the current frame. To minimize quality degradation(i.e., pitch degradation) caused due to high-speed playback, the threshold filtering priorly eliminates relatively low-activity blocks including voice and unvoice. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides a playback speed control solution with higher quality than SOLA(Synchonized OverLap Add) method using the pitch extraction of speech.

  • Background and Objectives: Countertenors who can produce higher vocal pitch like female classical singer's voice and use both modal and falsetto register. This study was conducted to study phonatory characteristics between modal and falsetto register of the countertenor. Materials and Methods: A male countertenor who had 8 years of experience was examined using a videostroboscopy and his voice was analyzed using aerodynamic measures; fundamental frequency(F0), Mean air flow rate(MFR), intensity(SLP), subglottal air pressure(Psub) with phonatory function analyzer(Nagashima) and acoustic measures; jitter, shimmer, HNR, closed quotient(CQ) using a Electro-glottography(EGG) of Lx. Speech Studio(Laryngoscope, Ltd, UK) and voice range profile of CSL(Kay elemetrics). Results: In the stroboscopy finding, the longitudinal length of vocal folds was increased at the falsetto register and the upper margin of vocal folds vibrated with incomplete closure of true vocal folds. In aerodynamic analysis, intensity was same at the modal and falsetto register. However, MFR, Psub, MPT were higher at the falsetto register. In the electroglottographic analysis, closed quotient(CQ) at the modal register was high and also much higher at the high-pitch falsetto than at the loud falsetto. In the VRP, intensity was similar though F0 was different between modal and falsetto register. Conclusion: It implied that countertenor could produce powerful voice quality by increasing of respiratory pressure and respiratory volume though glottal closure was incomplete. In addition, no change of EGG waveform, similar voice range with alto was observed.

  • Purpose: To determine the clinical and radiographic results of arthroereisis using the $Kalix^{(R)}$ implant (Newdeal, Lyon, France) for the treatment of flexible flatfoot deformity. Materials and Methods: From February 2005 to February 2007, we performed the subtalar arthroereisis on 8 patients (9 feet) of symptomatic flexible flat feet after more than 6 months of conservative treatment. Average age was 14.5 years ($11{\sim}29$ years) old. We checked the functional status with AOFAS functional score pre-operatively and at final follow-up. Radiologically, we took weight bearing anterior to posterior and lateral view of the feet, and measured the talo-first metatarsal angle, calcaneal pitch angle in pre-operatively and at final follow-up. Results: Mean follow up period was 34.4 months. Average AOFAS score improved from preoperatively 65.6 to postoperatively 94.8. Average lateral talo-first metatarsal angle reduced from $12.8^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $1.6^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Average anterior to posterior talo-first metatarsal angle was reduced from $15.1^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $8.3^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Average calcaneal pitch angle was increased from $9.5^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $12.0^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Conclusions: Subtalar arthroereisis with Kalix$K^{(R)}$ implant can be considered to be one of treatment options symptomatic flatfoot deformity patients.

  • This paper deals with the improvement of the synthesized speech quality and naturality in the Korean TTS(Text-to-Speech) system. We had extracted the parameters(table2) such as its amplitude, duration and pitch period in a syllable through the analysis of speech waveforms(table1) in the time domain and synthesized syllables using them. To the frequencies of the Korean pronunciation large vocabulary dictionary we had synthesized speeches selected 229 syllables such as V types are 19, CV types are 80. VC types are 30 and CVC types are 100. According to the 4 Korean syllable types from the data format dictionary(table3) we had tested each 15 syllables with the objective MOS(Mean Opinion Score) evaluation method about the 4 items i.e., intelligibility, clearness, loudness, and naturality after selecting random group without the knowledge of them. As the results of experiments the qualities of them are very clear and we can control the prosodic elements such as durations, accents and pitch periods (fig9, 10, 11, 12).

  • Purpose: We evaluate the results of subtalar arthroereisis with $Kalix^{(R)}$ implant (Newdeal, Lyon, France) that were performed in painful flatfoot deformity. Materials and Methods: We performed the subtalar arthroereisis on 16 feet of children symptomatic flexible flat feet after more than 6 months of conservative treatment. Average age was 11 years (8-14 years) old. We checked the functional status with AOFAS functional score in pre-operatively and at final follow-up. Radiologically, we took weight bearing anterior to posterior and lateral view of the feet, and measured the talo-$1^{st}$ metatarsal angle, calcaneal pitch angle, cuboid-surface height. Finally, we asked to patient's parents for satisfaction of the surgery. Results: Mean follow up period was 34.1 months. Average AOFAS score improved from preoperatively 71.9 to postoperatively 91.3. Only one patient has subtalar pain. Average lateral $1^{st}$ metatarsal angle reduced from $-18.2^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $-4.6^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Average anterior to posterior $1^{st}$ metatarsal angle was reduced from $18.9^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $6.5^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Average calcaneal pitch angle was increased from $8.6^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $12.6^{\circ}$ at final follow-up. Average cuoboid-surface height was improved from 12.1 mm preoperatively to 16.0 mm at final follow-up. All patients had excellent or good satisfaction. Conclusions: Subtalar arthroereisis with $Kalix^{(R)}$ implant is a viable surgical alternative for painful flatfoot deformity of children.

  • Radiographs were made of the feet of one hundred and twenty four normal children who were ranged in age from 1 to 13 years. On lateral radiographs that were made with the feet in standing, the talo-first metatarsal, calcaneal pitch and calcaneo-fifth metatarsal angles and arch ratio were measured. Most of the children in this study revealed flattened feet in earlier ages and the mean values were changed with age up to normal range later in the early school ages. These data might provide one of the standard for assessment of the flatfoot in children. However, the diagnosis and treatment of the flatfoot should be based on clinical assessment and radiographic values should not determine clinical management even if the values are beyond the normal range.
