  • Based on the Results of Marine Meteorological and Oceanographical Observations during 1966∼1987 and the Ten-day Marine Report during 1970∼1989 by Japan Meteorological Agency, the possible area where the Japan Sea Proper Water (JSPW) can be formed is investigated by analyzing the distribution of water types in the Japan Sea. The Japan Sea can be divided into three subareas of Northern Cold Water(NCW), Polar Front(PF) and Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) by the Polar Front identified by a 6℃ isothermal line at the sea surface in vinter. Mean position of the Polar Front is approximately parallel to the latitude 39∼40。N. The standard deviation of the Polar Front from the mean position of about 130km width is the smallest in the region between 136。E and 138。E where the Polar Front is very stable, because the branches of the Tsushima Current are converging in this region. However, standard deviations are about 180∼250km near the Korean peninsula and the Tsugaru Strait due to greater variability of warm currents. In the NCW area north of 40∼30。N and west of 138。E, the water types of the sea surface to the loom depth are similar to those of the JSPW. This fact indicates that the surface layer of the NCW area is the possible region of the JSPW formation in winter.

  • A multi-stage turbo equalization scheme based on the bit-level combining (BLC) is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ). In the proposed multi-stage turbo equalization scheme, the minimum mean-square-error equalizer at each iteration calculates the extrinsic log-likelihood ratios for the transmitted bits in a subpacket and the subpackets are sequentially replaced at each iteration according to the HARQ rounds of received subpackets. Therefore, a number of iterations are executed for different subpackets received at several HARQ rounds, and the transmitted bits received at the previous HARQ rounds as well as the current HARQ round can be estimated from the combined information up to the current HARQ round. In addition, the proposed multi-stage turbo equalization scheme has the same computational complexity as the conventional bit-level combining based turbo equalization scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-stage turbo equalization scheme outperforms the conventional BLC based turbo equalization scheme for MIMO systems with HARQ.

  • The electronics of a mobile robot ill nuclear facilities is required to satisfied the reliability to sustain survival in its radiation environment. To know how much radiation the robot has been encountered to replace sensitive electronic parts, a dosimeter to measure total accumulated dose is necessary. Among many radiation dosimeters or detectors, semiconductor radiation sensors have advantages in terms of power requirements and their sires over conventional detectors. This paper describes the use of the radiation-induced threshold voltage change of a commercial power pMOSFET as an accumulated radiation dose monitoring mean and that of the photo-current of a commercial PIN Diode as a dose-rate measurement mean. Commercial p-type power MOSFETs and PIN Diodes were tested in a Co-60 gamma irradiation facility to see their capabilities as radiation sensors. We found an inexpensive commercial power pMOSFET that shows good linearity in their threshold voltage shift with radiation dose and a PIN diode that shows good linearity in its photo-current change with dose-rate. According to these findings, a radiation hardened hybrid electronic radiation dosimeter for nuclear robots has been developed for the first time. This small hybrid dosimeter has also an advantage in the point of view of reliability improvement by using a diversity concept.

  • The aim of the study was to evaluate the anesthetic Effecs of pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation to the oral mucosa and the teeth. Twenty subjects who didn't have a history of significant systemic or current oral disease were included in this study. All the subjects were divided randomly into the experimental group and the control group with 10 for each group. Pain thresholds were measured with Weighted Needle Pinprick Sensory Threshold Test for the mucosal surface of lower lip and with electric pulp test for the upper right central incisor respectively, before and immediately after pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation in the condition of 2 watt, 20pps for 2 minute at 10mm distance. The experiment was double-blinded clinical trial. The results were as follows : 1. The mean pain threshold of the mucosal surface of lower lip for Weighted Needle Pinprick Sensory Threshold Test was 2.94(1.00g for the contral group respectively, and there was no statistical difference between two groups. 2. The mean pain threshold of the mucosal surface of lower lip was significantly increased immediately after pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation. 3. The mean pain threshold of the upper right central incisor for eledtric pulp test was 34.50(4.97V in the experimental group and 34.00(13.08V in the control group respectively, and there was no statistical difference between two groups. 4. The mean pain threshold of the upper right central incisor was significantly increased immediately after pulsed Nd:YAG laser irradiation.

  • In this paper, we propose a smoke detection method which is based on block-wise difference of image frames in video. Our proposed method is composed of three steps which are (a) the detection step of the changed regions against the background, (b) the background update step, and (c) the smoke determination step from the changed regions. We first construct the block mean Image of frames in video. And to extract the changed regions against the background, we use a block-wise difference between background's block mean image and a current input frame's block mean image. After applying projections in block-based difference images, we can determine the changed regions as rectangles using projections of difference images. we propose a update scheme of background's block mean image using the projections. We decide the smoke region using the femoral statistics of the central position and YUV color in the changed region.

  • Mercury and methylmercury concentrations were measured in 225 marine fish samples purchased from retail markets in 5 major Korean cities in 2005. The results showed that the concentrations of mercury and methylmercury ranged from 0.006-0.455 (mean=$0.054{\pm}0.025$) mg/kg and 0.004-0.120 (mean=$0.021{\pm}0.008$) mg/kg, respectively, in fish caught from the coastal waters of the Korean Peninsula. The concentrations in deep-sea fish including tuna ranged from 0.066-2.315 (mean=$0.095{\pm}0.640$) mg/kg for mercury and 0.027-0.897 (mean=$0.281{\pm}0.182$) mg/kg for methylmercury. The estimated weekly intakes (EWIs) of mercury and methylmercury reached 3.92 and 4.70% of the provisional tolerable weekly intakes (PTWI), respectively. Consequently, the levels of mercury and methylmercury in marine fish from current retail markets do not pose any significant health risks for Koreans.

  • We computed parameters that affect velocity distribution by applying Chiu's two-dimensional velocity distribution equation based on the theory of entropy probability and acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) of Jungmun-stream, Akgeun-stream, and Yeonoe-stream among the nine streams in Jeju Province between July 2011 and June 2015. In addition, velocity and flow were calculated using a surface image velocimeter to evaluate the parameters estimated in the velocity observation section of the streams. The mean error rate of flow based on ADCP velocity data was 16.01% with flow calculated using the conventional depth-averaged velocity conversion factor (0.85), 6.02% with flow calculated using the surface velocity and mean velocity regression factor, and 4.58% with flow calculated using Chiu's two-dimensional velocity distribution equation. If surface velocity by a non-contact velocimeter is calculated as mean velocity, the error rate increases for large streams in the inland areas of Korea. Therefore, flow can be calculated precisely by utilizing the velocity distribution equation that accounts for stream flow characteristics and velocity distribution, instead of the conventional depth-averaged conversion factor (0.85).

  • To improve the effect of image restoration and solve the image detail loss, an image dehazing enhancement algorithm based on mean guided filtering is proposed. The superpixel calculation method is used to pre-segment the original foggy image to obtain different sub-regions. The Ncut algorithm is used to segment the original image, and it outputs the segmented image until there is no more region merging in the image. By means of the mean-guided filtering method, the minimum value is selected as the value of the current pixel point in the local small block of the dark image, and the dark primary color image is obtained, and its transmittance is calculated to obtain the image edge detection result. According to the prior law of dark channel, a classic image dehazing enhancement model is established, and the model is combined with a median filter with low computational complexity to denoise the image in real time and maintain the jump of the mutation area to achieve image dehazing enhancement. The experimental results show that the image dehazing and enhancement effect of the proposed algorithm has obvious advantages, can retain a large amount of image detail information, and the values of information entropy, peak signal-to-noise ratio, and structural similarity are high. The research innovatively combines a variety of methods to achieve image dehazing and improve the quality effect. Through segmentation, filtering, denoising and other operations, the image quality is effectively improved, which provides an important reference for the improvement of image processing technology.

  • This study is performed to reexamine the association between ambient air pollution and daily mortality in seven major cities of Korea using a method of meta-analysis with the data filed for the period 1998-2001. These cities account for half of the Korean population (about 23 million). The observed concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO, mean=1.08 ppm), ozone ($O_3$, mean=33.97 ppb), particulate matter less than 10 ${\mu}m$ ($PM_{10},\;mean=57.11\;{\mu}g/m^3$), nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$, mean=25.09 ppb), and sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$, mean=9.14 ppb) during the study period were at levels below Korea's current ambient air quality standards. Generalized additive models were applied to allow for the highly flexible fitting of seasonal and long-term time trends in air pollution as well as nonlinear associations with weather variables, such as air temperature and relative humidity. Also, we calculated a weighted mean as a meta-analysis summary of the estimates and its standard error. In city-specific analyses, an increase of $41.17{\mu}g/m^3(IQR)\;of\;PM_{10}$ corresponded to $1{\sim}12%$ more deaths, given constant weather conditions. Like most of air pollution epidemiologic studies, this meta-analysis cannot avoid fleeing from measurement misclassification since no personal measurement was taken. However, we can expect that a measurement bias be reduced in district-specific estimate since a monitoring station is better representative of air quality of the matched district. Significant heterogeneity was found for the effect of all pollutants. The estimated relative risks from meta-like analysis increased compared to those relative risks from pooled analysis. The similar results to those from the previous studies indicated existence of health effect of air pollution at current levels in many industrialized countries, including Korea.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the practice patterns of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) doctors and the acceptance of payment model in order to develop a new TKM health insurance payment model linked with TKM clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). Methods : Lumbar herniated intervertebral disc (HIVD) and idiopathic facial palsy (IFP) were selected as a test diseases to develop a new TKM payment model. The level of benefit coverage in the National Health Insurance (NHI) was designed. The survey asked 228 TKM doctors about their practice patterns in HIVD and IFP patients and acceptance of new payment model. Results : Mean of medical cost for treatment of HIVD was 441,000 KW, mean of treatment period ranged from 4.9 to 17.5 weeks, and mean of number of treatment ranged from 14.6 to 50.4 HIVD patients. In the case of IFP, mean of medical cost for treatment of IFP was 468,000 KW, mean of treatment period was at least 4.2 and up to 15.9 weeks and mean of number of treatment ranged from 14.2 to 52 IFP patients. Conclusions : Current study suggests that mixed payment model of per-visit and episode-based model seem to be proper. The model 1 bundles both items which were covered and not covered by NHI in a rational way. The model 2 is based on the development and application of critical pathway. Lastly, model 3 suggests bundling of items covered by current NHI. Acceptance of TKM doctors is expected to be highest in the model 3.
