  • Energy demand characteristics of hotel, hospital, and office building are compared to provide guidelines for combining building in community energy system design. The annual, monthly, and daily energy demand patterns for electricity, heating, hot water and cooling are qualitatively compared and important features are delineated based on the energy demand models. Key statistical values such as the mean, the maximum are also provided. Important features of the hourly demand patterns are summarized for weekdays and weekends. Substantial variations in both magnitudes and patterns are observed among the 3 building types and smart grouping or combination of building type and size is essential for a successive energy supply.

  • The working load at pile is sometimes subjected to not only compression load but also lateral load and uplift forces. Pile foundation is essential and uplift load can be applied because of buoyancy, a typhoon, wind or seismic forces. This study was carried out to determine the uplift capacity of concrete pile foundation driven in clay. Pile was driven in clay, between pile and clay adhesion factor was estimated, and it is the mean value between the cast-in-situ-pile and steel pipe pile. When pile foundation is loaded for long time, creep behavior occurs. The behavior of creep is originated from the clay creep contacted with pile. The creep behavior of pile foundation embedded in clay is heavily depended on the thickness of clay around the pile shaft, pore water pressure in clay, and creep behavior of clay.

  • To enhance the scalability of high performance packet switches, a two-stage load-balanced switch has recently been introduced, in which each stage uses a deterministic sequence of configurations. The switch is simple to make scalable and has been proven to provide 100% throughput. However, the load-balanced switch may mis-sequence the packets. In this paper, we propose an algorithm called full frame stuff (FFS), which maintains packet order in the two-stage load-balanced switch and has excellent switching performance. This algorithm is distributed and each port can operate independently.

  • A parallel Monte Carlo photon migration algorithm for graphics processing units that implements an improved load-balancing strategy is presented. Conventional parallel Monte Carlo photon migration algorithms suffer from a computational bottleneck due to their reliance on a simple load-balancing strategy that does not take into account the different length of the mean free paths of the photons. In this paper, path-partition load balancing is proposed to eliminate this computational bottleneck based on a mathematical formula that parallelizes the photon path tracing process, which has previously been considered non-parallelizable. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested using three-dimensional photon migration simulations of a human skin model.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a grid based model for calculating the critical nonpoint source (NPS) pollution load (BOD, TN, TP) in Nak-dong area in South Korea. In the last two decades, NPS pollution has become a topic for research that resulted in the development of numerous modeling techniques. Watershed researchers need to be able to emphasis on the characterization of water quality, including NPS pollution loads estimates. Geographic Information System (GIS) has been designed for the assessment of NPS pollution in a watershed. It uses different data such as DEM, precipitation, stream network, discharge, and land use data sets and utilizes a grid representation of a watershed for the approximation of average annual pollution loads and concentrations. The difficulty in traditional NPS modeling is the problem of identifying sources and quantifying the loads. This research is intended to investigate the correlation of NPS pollution concentrations with land uses in a watershed by calculating Expected Mean Concentrations (EMC). This work was accomplished using a grid based modelling technique that encompasses three stages. The first step includes estimating runoff grid by means of the precipitation grid and runoff coefficient. The second step is deriving the gird based model for calculating NPS pollution loads. The last step is validating the gird based model with traditional pollution loads calculation by applying statistical t-test method. The results on real data, illustrate the merits of the grid based modelling approach. Therefore, this model investigates a method of estimating and simulating point loads along with the spatially distributed NPS pollution loads. The pollutant concentration from local runoff is supposed to be directly related to land use in the region and is not considered to vary from event to event or within areas of similar land uses. By consideration of this point, it is anticipated that a single mean estimated pollutant concentration is assigned to all land uses rather than taking into account unique concentrations for different soil types, crops, and so on.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the flexural properties of a recently introduced urethane dimethacrylate denture base material (Eclipse) after being repaired with two different materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two repair groups and a control group consisting of 10 specimens each were generated. The ES group was repaired with auto-polymerizing polymer. The EE group was repaired with the Eclipse. The E group was left intact as a control group. A 3-point bending test device which was set to travel at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min was used. Specimens were loaded until fracture occurred and the mean displacement, maximum load, flexural modulus and flexural strength values and standard deviations were calculated for each group and the data were statistically analyzed. The results were assessed at a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS. The mean "displacement", "maximum load before fracture", flexural strength" and "flexural modulus" rates of Group E were statistically significant higher than those of Groups ES and EE, but no significant difference (P>.05) was found between the mean values of Group ES and EE. There was a statistically significant positive relation (P<.01) between the displacement and maximum load of Group ES (99.5%), Group EE (94.3%) and Group E (84.4%). CONCLUSION. The more economic and commonly used self-curing acrylic resin can be recommended as an alternative repair material for Eclipse denture bases.

  • This study investigates the effects of sediment on the flow characteristics such as velocity distribution, friction velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress, etc. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTY) is used to measure the vertical flow field. Results show that flow over the high bed-load concentration region has larger values of mean velocity and friction velocity and smaller values of turbulence intensities, compared to those for flow over the low bed-load concentration region.

  • It is common to assum identical allowable safety factors in static strength, defined by mean stress and in fatigue, defined by stress amplitude. Under the load with asymmetrical cycles the safety factor is not the same. In this paper, with the consideration of unequal allowable safety factors a general method for estimating fatigue reliability of a machine element under a combined state of stress is derived based on the theory proposed by Prof. Kececioglu and normal distribution. The calculation of fatigue reliability for limited life is discussed with example.

  • This paper presents an effective way of improving fuel consumption for a variable displacement engine. The improvement of fuel consumption can be accomplished by means of deactivating inlet and exhaust valves, reducing the number of effective cylinders of a four-cylinder gasoline engine that is mounted on a domestic compact automobile.

  • The objective of this study is to obtain adequate intercepting flow during wet weather conditions in combined sewer system. Two study sites are selected under considering different population density, one is developed area with heavy urbanization. Another is recently developing area. In the analysis of field investigation, SS was most significant in initial flushing effects compared with other factors and showed the result with the order of COD, TP, TN. As compared with event mean concentration(EMC) of runoff, BOD, TN and TP showed high concentrations in wide area with relatively large population density. It is by the reason that much pollution load was discharged to receiving water from urbanized area during wet period. According to results of storm-water modeling, 53% of total COD and 52% of total SS pollution load were discharged to receiving water by overflow than intercepting capacity in middle population density site. Also, in the urbanized area, pollution load was discharged to receiving water by 49% of total COD and 77% of total SS. These results can be applied to setup for pollution load flow(budget) generation, collection, treatment and discharging in order to obtain adequate intercepting flow.
