  • A composite of $Ca_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$ and MgAl$_2$O$_4$ spinel is biologically active and has enduring strength. Its strength depends on the spinel phase. The flaws in the spinel depend on the grain size of the calcium phosphate phase and are not altered by dissolution. The calcium phosphate, ${\alpha}$ tri-calcium phosphate, controls the tissue response. Bone bonds to the implant. A design for a bone graft as a replacement for a section of the diaphysis of a canine femur provides for tensile, compressive, torsional and bending load; and for the physiological processes of bonding and remodeling. A bone plate, used to stabilize the implant at time of surgery was removed after about one year. Over seven years of service have been achieved without internal or external fixation.

  • After successful commissioning observations, IGRINS will soon begin its normal scientific operations on the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at the McDonald Observatory. We will present a working version of the IGRINS operation plan. A fraction of IGRINS guaranteed time will be devoted to a selection of strategic programs with legacy values, whereas the rest of the time will be used for normal programs. We will also describe the current status of the IGRINS data reduction pipeline package and its future development plan.

  • Planetary nebulae (PN) are the last stages of evolution of intermediate mass (1-8 Msolar) stars. Their shapes are thought to result from interactions between the present-day, fast (emerging white dwarf) and previously ejected, slow (red giant) stellar winds. The observation of young, bright PN, NGC7027 and BD+30 3639, was made on July 7, 2014 using the 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope at the McDonald Observatory. IGRINS with high spatial (0.27") and high spectral ($7.5km\;s^{-1}$) resolution will provide more nebular lines and excitation/abundances to constrain the morphology and kinematics of the Nebula and the PDRs. Combined with other archival data (X-ray, 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, Herschel) for PN, high-resolution IR spectroscopy will yield insight into poorly understood aspects of PN morphologies and the late stages of binary star evolution.

  • CQUEAN (Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) is a newly developed camera system by CEOU optimized at 0.8 - $1.1{\mu}m$ wavelength region. From Aug. 10 to Aug. 17, 2010, the camera was installed at 2.1m Otto Struve telescope at McDonald Observatory, USA, and engineering test observation was performed. We obtained the data for the characteristics of camera and scientific purpose using 7 filters (g, r, i, z, Is, Iz, Y). For the purpose of discovery of z - 5~6 quasar, we specially used new filters (Is,Iz). During the test observation, we obtained the data of Gamma-Ray Burst, high redshift quasars, high redshift quasar candidates and other calibration data. We present general characteristics of the reduced data taken with CQUEAN and show the performance of the camera.

  • Consider a multitype queue where queued customers arc served in their order of arrival at a rate which depends on the customer type. Here we calculate the sharp asymptotics of the probability the total number of customers in the queue reaches a high level before emptying. The natural state space to describe this queue is a tree whose branches increase in length as the number of customers in the queue grows. Consequently it is difficult to prove a large deviation principle. Moreover, since service rates depend on the customer type the stationary distribution is not of product form so there is no simple expression for the stationary distribution. Instead, we use a change of measure technique which increases the arrival rate of customers and decreases the departure rate thus making large deviations common.

  • Heat losses from the receivers for a dish-type solar energy collecting system constructed at Korea Institute of Energy Research are analyzed. The Stine and McDonald's model is used to estimate the convection loss. The Net Radiation method and the Monte-Carlo method are used to calculate the radiation heat transfer rate from the inside surface of the receiver to the surroundings. Two different receivers are suggested here and the performances of the receivers are estimated and compared with each other based on the prediction of the amount of heat losses from the receivers. The effects of the receiver shape and the radiation properties of the surface on the thermal performance are investigated. The performance of Receiver I is better than that of Receiver II, and the amount of solar irradiation that is not captured by the captured by the receiver after being reflected by the concentrator becomes significant if the temperature of the working fluid is low.

  • CQUEAN(Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) has been used at the 2.1 m Otto Struve Telescope of the McDonald Observatory since 2010. This camera is optimized at 0.7 - 1.1 um for the survey of Lyman break of high redshift (z > 5) quasars in the early universe. The current system has a filter wheel consist of seven (g', r', I', z', Y, Iz and Is) broad-band filters. We are upgrading this filter wheel to have 20 narrow band filters, with which we can take spectral energy distributions of targets. The new filter wheel consists of interchangeable cartridges for 50 mm square filters, a speed reducer unit, and a step motor. This new design of the large size filter wheel can be applied to other large format CCD cameras.

  • Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (CQUEAN) is an optical CCD camera, developed by Center for Exploration of Origin of the Universe (CEOU), which is now searching for high red shift quasar candidates. It has been operated since 2010, attached to the 2.1m Otto Struve telescope at the McDonald Observatory, USA. Based on the previous operation experiences, we present CQUEAN II system design which has a new filter wheel allowing with 20 narrow band filters. In addition, the auto guiding system will be rearranged and the interfacing units between the telescope and the instrument will become stabilized.

  • K-GMT Science Program, operated by Center for Large Telescopes (CfLAT) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), aims to promote the scientific researches by providing the access to the observational facilities such as 4-8m class telescopes and specialized instruments. In 2016, we plan to make various instruments with MMT and Gemini Observatory as well as IGRINS with 2.7m HJS Telescope in McDonald Observatory available to Korean Astronomical Community. We will present the current status and future prospect as well as some early results made from the K-GMT Science Program in past years.
