  • This paper presents exact close form solutions of plastic limit loads of a clamped circular plate under uniformly distributed load with different loading radii. A unified yield criterion, which includes a family of piecewise linear yield criteria and the commonly adopted yield criteria such as the Tresca criterion and the maximum principal deviatoric stress criterion or the twin shear stress criterion that are its special cases, and the Mises criterion can be approximated by it, is employed in the analysis. The plastic limit loads, moment fields and velocity fields of the clamped circular plate are calculated based on the unified yield criterion. The influences of the yield criteria, the edge effects and the loading radius on the plastic limits of the clamped circular plate are investigated. Analytical results are calculated and compared. The exact close form solutions presented in this paper provide efficient approaches for obtaining plastic limit loads and the corresponding moments and velocities of the clamped circular plates. The previously derived solutions based on the Tresca and the Mises criteria are its special cases.

  • The plastic deformation behavior of an aluminum alloy containing a particle and porosities was investigated at room temperature during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). Finite element analysis by using ABAQUS shows that ECAP is a useful tool for eliminating residual porosity in the specimen, and more effective under friction condition. The simulation, however, shows considerably low density distributions for matrix near a particle at which many defects may occur during severe deformation. Finite element results of effective strains and deformed shapes for matrix with a particle were compared with theoretical calculations under simple shear stress. Also, based on the distribution of the maximum principal stress in the specimen, Weibull fracture probability was obtained for particle sizes and particle-coating layer materials. The probability was useful to predict the trend of more susceptible failure of a brittle coating layer than a particle without an interphase in metal matrix composites.

  • A coupled thermal/structural analysis of mechanical ablation is performed based on domain/boundary decomposition and finite element method. The ablative material non-linearity and boundary non-linearity can be easily localized within a few subdomains and/or on the boundary interfaces. An enthalpy method is applied to simplify the effect of heat of pyrolysis in the ablative subdomains. In addition, maximum in-plane shear stress is considered as a surface recession criterion for the mechanical ablation simulation. The basic characteristics of the proposed method are examined carefully through numerical experiments.

  • Aluminum foams sandwich panel (AFSP) has been used in engineering field, where cyclic loading is used in most of the applications. In this paper, the fatigue life of AFSP prepared by the bonding method was investigated through a three-point bending test. The mathematical statistics method was used to analyze the influence of different plate thicknesses and core densities on the bending fatigue life. The macroscopic fatigue failure modes and damage mechanisms were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that panel thickness and core layer density have a significant influence on the bending fatigue life of AFSP and their dispersion. The damage mechanism of fatigue failure to cells in aluminum foam is that the initial fatigue crack begins the cell wall, the thinnest position of the cell wall or the intersection of the cell wall and the cell ridge, where stress concentrations are more likely to occur. The fatigue failure of aluminum foam core usually starts from the semi-closed unit of the lower layer, and the fatigue crack propagates layer by layer along the direction of the maximum shear stress. The results can provide a reference for the practical engineering design and application of AFSP.

  • This research computes the viscous flow field and aerodynamics around the model of a commercial passenger airplane, Boeing 747-400, which cruises in transonic speed. The configuration was realized through the reverse engineering based on the photo scanning measurement. In results, the pressure coefficients at the several wing section on the wing surface of the airplane was described and discussed to obtain the physical meaning. The lift coefficient increased almost linearly up to $17^{\circ}$. Here the maximum lift occurred at $18^{\circ}$ according to the angle of attack. And the minimum drag is expected at $-2^{\circ}$. The maximum lift coefficient occurred at the Mach number 0.89, and the drag coefficient rapidly increased after the Mach number of 0.92. Also shear-stress transport model predicts slightly lower aerodynamic coefficients than other models and Chen's model shows the highest aerodynamic values. The aerodynamic performance of the airplane elements was presented.

  • A parametric study on the shapes of bobsleigh bumpers has been performed to reduce the aerodynamic drag. Effects of geometric parameters, such as leading angle of leading bumper, the ratio of minimum width to maximum width of leading bumper, the ratio of leading bumper length to trailing bumper length, trailing angle of trailing bumper, and the ratio of bumper height to installation location of bumper from the bottom of bobsleigh, on the aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh were estimated using 3-D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The turbulence was analyzed using the shear stress turbulence model. Reynolds number based on the hydraulic diameter of the external flow channel was in the range of 150,000~1,000,000. Numerical results for drag coefficient were validated compared to experimental data. Ranges of the five geometric parameters were determined according to the rule of Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobaganning. The aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh sled was most sensitive to the leading angle of leading bumper and the ratio of minimum width to maximum width of leading bumper.

  • The present study is aimed to investigate experimentally on the hydrodynamic behaviours of air ~ pulverized coal flow in rectangular combustor with cavity. Mean velocity, density and tur¬bulent properties of pulverized coal in rectangular entrained flow combustor were measured by PDA. Experimental results show that the flow reattachment point at the lower plane in the com¬buster chamber has been developed near X/D= 15. The similarities at each section are found after the flow reattachment point. The maximum values of turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress have been shown near Y/D=6, which is higher than centerline. The maximum density of the pulverized coal sited in the range ofY/D=6~8.

  • The study was conducted in order to investigate the basic geotechnical properties of sand-bentonite mixtures with the various bentonite contents. The results obtained are as follows : 1. Optimum moisture content of sand-bentonite mixtures was approximately 17.10~18.52% corresponding to the maximum dry density of 1.58~1 .64gf/$cm^3$. As the bentonite contents and curing peroid increased, both the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of sand-bentonite mixtures increased. 2. The unconfined compressive strength of sand-bentonite mixtures increased as the increase of bentonite content, but it did not change along the curing period. 3. The sand-bentonite mixtures ruptured at 8~15% of the axial strain and the maxi-mum shearing stress was about O.7Okgf/$cm^2$. 4. According to the increase of bentonite content, the cohesion intercept and internal friction of the sand-bentonite mixtures increased slightly in the shear test, while the cohesion intercept increased largely, and the internal friction angle decreased largely in the triaxial test. 5. Both the initial void ratio and swelling of the sand-bentonite mixtures were very low with respect to the consolidation pressure increase. 6. The swelling and shrinkage of sand-bentonite mixtures increased slightly according to the increment of bentonite content.

  • This present work is to find optimum design of a NACA65 axial fan blade with weighted average surrogate model. The numerical analysis by Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress turbulence(SST) is discretized by finite volume approximations and solved on hexahedral grids for flow analysis. The blade aerodynamic shape is modified by six design variables for the optimization. The blade profile as well as stacking line is modified to enhance blade total efficiency. Six design variables, airfoil maximum camber, maximum camber location, leading edge radius, trailing edge radius, lean angle at 50% span and lean angle at 100% span, are selected for blade profile to enhance the total efficiency. The PBA model which is basically weighted average of the basis surrogates is used to find the optimal design in the design space from the constructed response surface model for the objective function. By the optimization, the total efficiency is increased by 1.4%.
