  • In a hope to better understand the flow and convective heat transfer characteristics inside a ball bearing, air flow between the rolling elements and raceways at high speed bearing rotation is numerically investigated using a simplified inner geometry of bearing and a CFD technique. Flow simulation results reveal the pressure distribution of airflow and the shear stress distribution on the ball surface, of which nonuniformity becomes significant with the increasing rotational speed. Also, the local point of maximum shear stress coincides with the stagnation flow area on the surface of rolling elements. A complex pattern of three-dimensional vortex structures is found in the air flow due to the relative motion of bearing elements and three different types of vortex pairs exist around the rotating and orbiting rolling elements.

  • In the present computational study, simple stenotic artery models using pulsatile flow condition were investigated. A 1 Hz non-reversing sinusoidal velocity for pulsatile flow was imposed at the flow inlet and the corresponding Womersley number based on the vessel radius is 2.75. The simple stenotic geometries have been used that consist of 25%, 50% and 75% semicircular constriction in a cylindrical tube. In this paper, numerical solutions are presented for a first harmonic oscillatory flow using commercial software ADINA 8.4. As stenosis and Reynolds number increase, the maximum wall shear stress(WSS) increases while the minimum WSS decreases. As the stenotic rate increases, the pressure drop at the throat severely decreases to collapse the artery and plaque. It is found that the fluid mechanical disturbances due to the constriction were highly sensitive with rate of stenosis and Reynolds number. When Reynolds number and stenosis increase, the larger recirculation region exists. In this recirculation region the possibility of plaque attachment is increasingly higher. The present results enhance our understanding of the hemodynamics of a stenotic artery.

  • A theoretical and numerical investigation is performed on the flow in a micronozzle for precision-controlled sealant dispenser. The working fluid is a highly viscous epoxy used as sealant in producing LCD panels, which contains a number of tiny solid spacers. Flow analysis is conducted in order to achieve the optimal design of internal geometry of a nozzle. A simplified design analysis methodology is proposed for predicting the flow in the nozzle based on the assumption that the Reynolds number is much less than O(1). The parallel numerical computations are performed by using a CFD package FLUENT. Comparison discloses that the theoretical model gives a good prediction on the distribution of pressure and wall shear stress in the nozzle. However, the theoretical model has a difficulty in predicting the maximum wall shear stress as found in a limited region near edge by numerical computation. The theoretical and numerical simulations provide the good guideline for designing a dispensing micronozzle.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the shore margin protection effect of a root system developed from direct sticking of Salix gracilistyla Miq., focusing on the reinforcement of soil shear strength. The materials were 20cm long sticks whose average diameter and weight were 7.52mm and 14.58g respectively, and sandy loam(Sand 60.36%, Silt 28%, Clay 11.64%), whose maximum dry weight(${\gamma}$$_{dmax}$) was 1.59gf/㎤ at the water ratio( $W_{opt}$) 13.8%. The direct shearing test(KS F 2343) was applied to cylindric columms(diameter 132mm) of pure soil and two years old root reinforced soil. At each condition of vertical stress, 10N/$ extrm{cm}^2$, 14.41N/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 18.82 N/$\textrm{cm}^2$, five soil+root columns were sheared. After shear tests, the root area ratio and soil moisture on the shear plane were measured. The results of this research were as follows: 1. The average of root area ratio was 1.86% and the soil moisture 14.67%. 2. Two years old root system was found to increase the soil shear strength of pure soil in terms of Cohesion(C) and Inner friction Angle($\phi$) as follows. 3. The relationship between root area ratio and the increased shear strength can be presented with the following equation, $\Delta$S ≒ 0.33ㆍ TrㆍAs/A $\Delta$S : Increased Shear Strength Tr : Average Tension Strength of Root, Ar/A : Root Area Ratioioage Tension Strength of Root, Ar/A : Root Area Ratio

  • This paper deals with reliability analysis of specially orthotropic plates subjected to transverse lateral pressure loads by using Monte Carlo simulation method. The plates are simply supported around their all edges and have a low short span to plate depth ratio with rectangular plate shapes. Various levels of reliability analyses of the plates are performed within the context of First-Ply-Failure(FPF) analysis such as ply-/laminate-level reliability analyse, failure tree analysis and sensitivity analysis of basic design variables to estimated plate reliabilities. In performing all these levels of reliability analyses, the followings are considered within the Monte Carlo simulation method: (1) input parameters to the strengths of the plates such as applied transverse lateral pressure loads, elastic moduli, geometric including plate thickness and ultimate strength values of the plates are treated as basic design variables following a normal probability distribution; (2) the mechanical responses of the plates are calculated by using simplified higher-order shear deformation theory which can predict the mechanical responses of thick laminated plates accurately; and (3) the limit state equations are derived from polynomial failure criteria for composite materials such as maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu and Hoffman.

  • Numerical analysis is important for the design, construction and maintenance of large caverns. The rock mass contains generally discontinuities such as faults, joints and fissures. The mechanical behavior and geometric characteristics of these discontinuities would have a significant impact on the stability of the caverns. In this research the Distinct Element Method(DEM) was used to analyze the structural stability of the large cavern. The Barton-Bandis Joint Model (B-B J.M) was used as a constitutive model for the joint. In addition, two different cases 1) analysis with a support system and 2) analysis with no support system, were analyzed to optimize a support system and to investigate reinforcing effects of a support system. The most significant parameters of in-situ stress, JRC of in-situ natural joints, and spatial distribution characteristics of discontinuities were acquired through field investigation. Displacement (horizontal, joint shear), maximum joint opening, maximum and minimum principal stresses, range of relaxed zone, rockbolt axial forces and shotcrete stresses were calculated at each excavation stage. As a result of analysis the calculated values proved to be under the allowable value Rockbolts also proved to be an efficient support measure to control joint shear displacement which had significant effects on extending the relaxed zone. As a consequence, the structural stability of the cavern was assured with an appropriate support system.

  • Most of the recent for the flow field hydrofoil in partially cavitating condition are the ones which are linearized, and the problem of cavity end region for hydrofoil is not verified. This paper deals with a study on characteristics of end region flow field for partially cavitating hydrofoil by using a characteristics of shear turbulence flow and nonlinear cavity flow theory. The results obtained as follows : 1) Shear layer thickness is decreased gradually going to the end section of hydrofoil. When attack angle is large, it is appeared largely at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing. 2) The fluctuation velocity of a second-degree relative direction have minimum value at the front of hydrofoil or at the end of hydrofoil. The difference for the validity of attack angle is appeared largely at the surrounding of .chi.$_{e}$ point. 3) The fluctuation velocity of transverse direction decrease from the maximum thickness of cavitation to the end of hydrofoil, but it undergoes largely the effect of pressure recovery. The difference is larger at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing than at the of hydrofoil. 4) The distribution of Reynolds stress have maximum values at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing and the end of foil, and the larger attack angle, the larger the distribution of value.e.

  • In the case of columns in buildings with soft story, the concentration of stress due to the difference in stiffness can damage the columns. The irregularity of buildings including soft story requires retrofit because combined load of compression, bending, shear, and torsion acts on the structure. Concrete jacketing is advantageous in securing the strength and stiffness of existing members. However, the brittleness of concrete make it difficult to secure ductility to resist the large deformation, and the complicated construction process for integrity between the existing member and extended section reduces the constructability. In this study, two types of Steel Grid Reinforcement (SGR), which are Steel Wire Mesh (SWM) for integrity and Steel Fiber Non-Shrinkage Mortar (SFNM) for crack resistance are proposed. One reinforced concrete (RC) column with non-seismic details and two columns retrofitted with each different types of proposed method were manufactured. Seismic performance was analyzed for cyclic loading test in which a combined load of compression, bending, shear, and torsion was applied. As a result of the experiment, specimens retrofitted with proposed concrete jacketing method showed 862% of maximum load, 188% of maximum displacement and 1,324% of stiffness compared to non-retrofitted specimen.

  • The slope stability analysis of Carsington dam is performed, considering the effects of pore water pressure, slip surface configuration, lateral stress and various shear strengths. Without yellow clay layer, the Bowles' and STABR programs were used to find the circular slip surface which has the maximum safety factor. At last using the Morgenstern-Price method, the effects of rainfall and strength of yellow clay were mainly considered in the back analyses after failure. It was found that (1) the potential slip was not predicted in the analysis based on the modified Bishop method without considering the yellow clay layer, and (2) the crllapse of dam had been occurred according to the critical shear strength of the yellow clay and pore water pressure increase.
