  • ZnS thin films were deposited with the radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique at various temperatures and sputtering powers. With the increase in the deposition temperature and the decrease in the radio frequency sputtering power, the crystallinity was increased and the surface roughness was decreased, which lead to the decrease in the electrical resistivity of the film. It is also clearly observed that, the intensity of the (111) XRD peak increases with increasing the substrate temperature. On the other hand, as seen in the FWHM decreased with increasing the substrate temperature. Since the FWHM of the (111) diffraction peak is inversely properties to the grain size of the film, then grain size of ZnS thin film increases with increasing the substrate temperature. The electrical resistivity and optical transmittance of the ZnS film as a function of the post-annealing temperature. It can be seen that with the annealing temperature set at $400^{\circ}C$, the resistivity decreases to a minimum value of $2.1{\times}10^{-3}\;{\Omega}cm$ and the transmittance increases to a maximum value of 80% of the ZnS film.

  • Silicon nitride ceramic has been verified as an excellent rolling bearing material because of its high strength and outstanding rolling fatigue life properties. However under some corrosive circumstances it showed drawbacks such as hardness reduction and severe wear caused by corrosion. In this work, the variations of the rolling wear and hardness of three kinds of ceramics were studied for the specimen aged 15 days in alkali water (90 $\pm$ 2$\^{C}$,25 wt% NaOH ). All of the specimens, ① Si$_3$N$_4$, ② 3Y-TZP and ③ 3Y-TZP alloyed with 5 wt% CeO$_2$, were sintered and post-HIPed, and then polished up to 0.02 $\mu$mRa of surface roughness. Rolling wear tests were conducted by MJ type rolling fatigue life tester under the initial theoretical maximum contact stress of 3.16 GPa and the spindle speed of 1,000 rpm. Spindle oil was used as a lubricant. The specimens were not worn before aging. For the specimen aged in alkali water, Si$_3$N$_4$ and 3Y-TZP were worn by rolling wear tests, and hardness was decreased. While aging the specimens, the phase was transformed from tetragonal to monoclinic in 3Y-TZP and the microstructure change occurred in Si$_2$N$_4$. 3Y-TZP specimens alloyed with 5 wt% CeO$_2$ were not worn after aging and no phase transformation occurred while aging.

  • The Cr-Zr-N films have much improved mechanical properties and very smooth surface roughness. However, in spite of their outstanding properties, the Cr-Zr-N coatings revealed their mechanical properties deteriorated severely with increasing Zr content at $500^{\circ}C$ ecause of very rapid oxidation. Recently oxynitride films have been widely studied due to their excellent unique mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. In this work, CrZr-O-N films with various O contents were synthesized by unbalanced magnetron sputtering with Cr-Zr segment targets (Cr:Zr volume ratios is 1:1) and all films were prepared in a nitrogen rich mixture of N2 and O2. Characteristics such as crystalline structure, hardness and chemical composition as a function of the O content were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), microhardness testing system and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results showed that the thin films had dense and compact microstructure as O content in the films increases. The microstructure of the thin films consisted of mainly crystalline Cr (Zr)N phase and Cr2O3 phase. The maximum hardness and elastic modulus of the films was measured to be approximately 33.2 GPa and 280.6 GPa from the films with low content of O elements. Detailed experimental results will be presented.

  • This study was to investigate the removal characteristics of toluene in a gas stream by using a biotrickling filter packed with zeolite-contained polyethylene media. The specific surface area and the void fraction of the media were $500\;m^2/m^3$ and 82%. The surface roughness of the media was higher than that of pure polyethylene media. The toluene removal efficiency decreased with increasing the inlet toluene concentration and gas flow rate. The maximum elimination capacity of toluene in the biotrickling filter was $64\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$. During 200 days operation, toluene removal efficiency was maintained from 90% to 98% until 167 days, hereafter, it was rapidly reduced with a rise in pressure drop due to an excess proliferation of biomass on the media. Pressure drop and removal capability of the biotrickling filter was fully recovered after backwashing.

  • High dielectric (Ba, Sr) TiO$_3$ thin films were etched in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) as a function of Cl$_2$/Ar mixing ration. Under Cl$_2$(20)/Ar(80), the maximum etch rate of the BST films was 400 $\AA$/mim and selectivities of BST to Pt and PR were obtained 0.4 and 0.2, respectively. Etching products were redeposited on the surface of BST and resulted in varying the nature of crystallinity. Therefore, we investigated the etched surface of BST by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) atomic force microscopy (AFM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). From the result of XPS analysis, we found that residues of Ba-Cl and Ti-Cl bonds remained on the surface of the etched BST for high boiling point. The morphology of the etched surfact was analyzed by AFM. A smoothsurface(roughness ~2.8nm) ws observed under Cl$_2$(20)/Ar(80), rf power of 600 W, dc bias voltage of -250 V and pressure of 10 mTorr. This changed the nature of the crystallinity of BST. From the result of XRD analysis, the crystallinities of the etched BST film under Ar only and Cl$_2$(20)/Ar(80) were maintained as similar to as-deposited BST. However, intensity of BST(100) orientation under Cl$_2$ only plasma was abruptly decreased. This indicated that CI compounds were redeposited on the etched BST surface and resulted in changed of the crystallinity of BST during the etch process.

  • In this study, a cold forging process was developed for the roller tappet housing of an engine valvetrain system. A tappet sample was manufactured and subjected to an endurance test. The material properties were obtained from a compression test, and forging analysis was carried out to design a forging process using a commercial program, Deform-3D. The forging process was set up based on the analysis results, and a die set and sample tappet housing were manufactured. To evaluate the sample, the dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, parallelism, and concentricity were measured and confirmed. To evaluate the actuation and durability, a special test rig was developed to simulate the valvetrain system of the engine. An actuation test was performed based on the idle speed of a general diesel engine, and an endurance test was done based on the maximum speed. The results show minor wear of 0.002 mm. The developed test rig will be used to evaluate the actuation and durability of other valvetrain parts.

  • In this paper, we report a method of improving the productivity of lead wire fabricated through the rolling process by increasing its linear velocity. The most important point to consider when raising the linear velocity is that the original specifications must still be adhered to. In other words, the dimensional tolerance must be satisfied when increasing the linear velocity of the wire without causing cracks. However, if the linear velocity of the wire is increased, the degree of reduction must also be increased, which causes more damage to the wire and increases the load on its surface. Therefore, we studied a three step rolling process which can satisfy the specifications of the wire produced through the two step rolling process and improve the productivity. In this study, only the roll gap of the three-stage rolling roller is assumed to be a variable, while the other conditions are the same as the field conditions. In addition, through the PIANO (Process Integration, Design and Optimization) tool, the (optimum?) surface roughness and maximum stress are maintained.

  • High-resolution atmospheric numerical system was set up to simulate the motion of the atmosphere and to produce the wind map on land. The results of several simulations were improved compare to the past system, because of using the fine geographical data, such as terrain height and land-use data, and the meteorological data assimilation. To estimate surface maximum wind speed when a typhoon is expected to strike the Korea peninsula, wind information at the upper level atmosphere was applied. Using 700hPa data, wind speed at the height of 300m was estimated, and surface wind speed was estimated finally considering surface roughness length. This study used formula from other countries and estimated RMW but RMW estimation formula apt to Korea should be developed for future.

  • In this study, the frictional behaviors of articular cartilage against a Co-Cr alloy in two types of kinematic motions were compared. Cartilage pins were punched from the femoral condyles of porcine knee joints, and Co-Cr alloy disks were machined from orthopedic-grade rods and polished to a surface roughness ($R_a$) of 0.002. Friction tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disk-type tribotester in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) under pressures of 0.5, 1, and 2 MPa. All tests were performed in the repeat pass rotational (ROT) and the linear reciprocal (RCP) sliding motions with the same sliding distance and speed of 50 mm/s. The coefficients of friction of the cartilage against the Co-Cr alloy increased with the sliding time in both kinematic motions for all contact pressures. The maximum coefficients of friction in RCP motion were 1.08, 2.82, and 1.96 times those in ROT motion for contact pressures of 0.5, 1, and 2 MPa, respectively. As the contact pressure increased, the coefficients of friction gradually increased in RCP motion, whereas they decrease and then increased in ROT motion. The interaction between the directional change of the shear stress and the orientation of collagen fiber in the superficial layer of the cartilage could affect the change in the frictional behaviors of the cartilage. A large difference in the coefficients of friction between the two kinematic motions could be interpreted as differences in the directional change of shear stress at the contact surface.
